Nurse Hawthorne, or Christina if you're on a first name basis with her, has had something of a difficult second season. She's had some opportunities for romance that have had awkward moments, gotten miffed at the world, gotten perturbed at her daughter, and struggled to keep her brand new but actually ancient hospital open. As they say, it's a tough job but someone has to do it. Well, they usually say that when the job isn't tough, but in this case it is, it really and truly is. Just tune into the season finale and see for yourself.

We are not going to sit here and tell you that we think that everything that has happened on "Hawthorne" this season has been pure genius. We have in fact been quite distressed by some of the storylines the show has gone with, but we're not going to call the show bad because of that. In fact, our caring about what happens to the characters is probably a sign that the show has been doing a pretty good job rather than a bad one. Oh sure, we wouldn't mind if the show gave us everything that we wanted, but we do care about the characters and that is something.

As we have seen over the course of the first two seasons of "Hawthorne," Jada Pinkett Smith's titular character has the weight of the world on her shoulders. It is not that she's been required, as some sort of penitence for the gods, to put it there, but much more that she has opted to take on the role of the world's savior. It actually makes for some pretty good drama too, except for when she clearly goes off half-cocked and you just know that had she simply taken a breath and thought for a second she could have avoided a whole lot of trouble. Watch and you'll see what we mean.

Perhaps it may sound a little harsh to refer to "Hawthorne" as the 'other cable nursing show.' However, we want you to know that we don't mean that with any malice nor are we referring to it with the word 'other' simply because it stars an African American woman. No, we used that phrase because it premiered after "Nurse Jackie," which makes the Showtime program the first one and this the second, or 'other,' one. In any case, it has Jada Pinkett Smith in the titular role, and we do love Jada Pinkett Smith.

TNT's "HawthoRNe" completes its first season with an episode titled "Hello and Goodbye."
Viewers needn't worry about really saying good-bye to the Jada Pinkett Smith medical drama, though.
TNT has already renewed "HawthoRNe" for a second season, premiering at some point in 2010.
Til then, viewers will still have plenty of nursing shows to occupy their time.
