At the end of last season, Hank Lawson had some pretty serious surgery, the potential deathly kind.  Of course, Mark Feuerstein is the lead actor on the show, it can't really exist without him, and with the show returning for a new season tonight, the character lives.  Just because he's alive though doesn't really mean the guy is ready for work.  We will find out tonight if he is, and we'll also get our first inklings about whether making Ben Shenkman a new series regular was a good plan.  In closing, hey, it's summer, don't you want to pretend that you too are in the Hamptons, living it up?

Tonight, the sixth season of USA summer favorite "Royal Pains" commences.  What does that mean for us (and by "us" we do indeed mean all of us)?  It means that it is time for fun, it is time for sun, and it is time for some truly strange cases to be solved by Hank Lawson, your favorite concierge doc to the rich and famous.  Except, of course, that he's kind of been doing some world traveling and there may not be much more space for Hank at HankMed.  Tune in and find out when the season begins tonight.

Here we are, Labor Day is behind us.  The summer is, unofficially over (technically speaking there are something like 10 days left), and consequently, we have to leave the Hamptons and HankMed.  Or, more accurately, it's leaving us.  We can still tune on our TVs next Wednesday at the exact same time, but there won't be any new episode of "Royal Pains" to greet us.  The series has already been renewed for another season, so whatever happens tonight won't be the end of the whole show, but it will be gone for a while.  Time enough then for one last ridiculously exotic, terribly expensive, summer drink.

We can't tell you that we understand everything that happens in the world (or on television) but we do understand some of it.  For instance, tonight, after 14 episodes have aired this season, we're getting the summer finale.  USA tends to break up the full season of their original series, which is why, despite not airing every episode of the season, they're going to start airing other things for now.  What we can't explain is why they're doing the break with only two episodes remaining in season four, but wiser minds than ours make these decisions.  Perhaps it will all become clear tonight just before the credits roll.

Over on a whole bunch of other networks there's this massive sporting event.  Obviously we appreciate said sporting event, but that doesn't mean that we don't want other things on television too.  For instance, tonight, on USA, there's going to be this Hamptons-based concierge doctor treating the super rich and doing a little bit of pro bono stuff as well.  So, if you're like us and looking for a little break in your eight million hours of Olympics viewing, might we suggest that this might just be what the doctor ordered?

Things ended on "Royal Pains" last season in a truly fun way, didn't they?  It isn't the fact that Hank and Evan are having issues once more, it's that the issues are bigger than ever that we really like.  Listen, we know a thing or two about brothers fighting, and we can tell you that even in the real world that sort of thing can last for decades so it makes total sense that they would last a while here as well.  As long as the fights keep getting bigger and better (and this current one is), we're totally fine with it.  We don't really expect this fight to last very long, just for new ones to keep cropping up.

The "Royal Pains" season is ending tonight.  Now, we feel like a show like this--one which so entirely depends on summer and warmth--when it ends its season, ought to finish with the onset of fall.  We want the leaves turning; we want, potentially, that first hint of snow in the air; we want people pulling on a sweater and noting 'Gee, it's getting chilly, isn't it?'  We don't actually see that taking place, but what we do see is relationships having troubles, people getting weird illnesses and our poor doctor friend trying to put everything right.  Let's all tune in and see if that happens, okay?

In NY, at some point last week, it became ridiculously cold and foul weather set in.  We are not quite sure how USA engineered that to happen at just the same time that "Royal Pains" and it's good time summer feel thing was returning to the air with new episodes, but they did.  It is our distinct hope that if we agree to tune in every week (as we're going to do tonight), the folks over there may allow our winter to be a mild one.  Please, for our sakes, tune in yourself and help the lows stay around 40 instead of around 10.  It would mean a lot to us.

We like the fact that this series is returning to us in the middle of winter.  Who says that the summer good life which we live vicariously through the people on this show (except for the dreaded diseases they have of course, that wouldn't be a part of the good life) has to be experienced only when the temperature is above freezing in the real Hamptons (if there is such a thing as the 'real' Hamptons).  The dead of winter is the perfect time for us to go have some summer fun with the super rich (except for their dreaded diseases of course).  Now we just have to go out and buy the right ingredients for a mojito.

On "Royal Pains" it is, essentially, always summer, but that doesn't mean that the summer season of the series doesn't have to come to an end.  In fact, it does have to come to an end; it has to come to an end this very evening.  Hank has been doing a whole lot of work this summer, putting in a whole lot of effort to make sure that the rich and powerful stay as healthy and sane as possible.  The poor guy deserves some time off, we do hope though that when Hank takes a vacation he doesn't go to some beach playground for the rich and famous, talk about a busman's holiday.

People, it is time once again to hop onboard the Jitney and make your way out to the Hamptons.  You know what we love about this show?  It's that we get to see rich people get sick.  We understand that the rich have bigger houses, nicer cars, go on better vacations, and generally lead a better life than us, but we appreciate a series in which they are seen to become ill.  Don't get us wrong, we like the fact that they're cured by the end of every episode and they are treated by the best concierge doctor ever (something no normal person can afford), but to see that they live like us in some ways (because we all get sick) is nice.

We know, for a show that premiered in the late Spring of 2009, for season two to be ending now (with all the various season premieres and finales the show has had) seems odd.  Don't' worry about it, we promise you that this is the season two finale for "Royal Pains."  There is no more season two after tonight.  Expect a big episode with potentially a lot of changes, and maybe even some sort of cool beans cliffhanger ending (like the Hamptons ending up below sea level, Manhattan becoming the New Hamptons and Hank having to make amends for his past life).

We are now in the cold, cruel depths of winter.  The snow is piling up, the furnace is cranky 23 out of every 24 hours and despite that, we still need tons of layers on.  We're hoping that the return of "Royal Pains," where it's perennially summer in the Hamptons, can do something to help us shake this winter chill.  If only Hankmed were real and we could call up Hank Lawson to come and give us a little dose of sunshine we'd really be pleased (not that he'd take our insurance or that we could afford his rates).  Until he pops out of the TV though, we'll have to console ourselves with his HD image.

Summer is, somehow, like gossamer.  It's there one minute and it's beautiful and radiant and heartwarming.  Then, you try and touch it; you try and feel it out and explore it and attempt to truly understand it.  It is at that moment - that moment of initial contact - when the whole thing unravels.  Hank Lawson may get to spend a never-ending summer treating the rich in the Hamptons, but we ask you, does he ever truly explore any of it, does he ever truly attempt to interact with his summer?  Sadly, we think the answer is that he doesn't.  Hank lives in a wonderful world of make believe, and as the summer is ending, we must depart from that world.

Summer is upon us once more and as all rich Manhattanites will tell you, it's time to gas up the chopper and head out to the Hamptons (all the poor Manhattanites will tell you to grab the Jitney).  Doctor Hank Lawson and the rest of the team over at Hank Med. (and the rest of the cast) are returning to our television screens tonight for some more sun-soaked, ocean spray-drenched, Hampton-y goodness.  We, personally, greatly look forward to seeing Hank's brother try to cure everyone's backache by lightening their wallets again this year.

USA Network's summer hit "Royal Pains" completes its first season with an episode titled "Wonderland."

Of the episode, USA teases, "Hank treats a woman suffering from hallucinations, Divya and Raj fret over their engagement party, and Jill's feelings for Hank come in question."

Don't worry, though, "Royal Pains" fans. No matter how things end, the series has already been renewed for a season season.
