Have you been watching "Southland" this season? Have you been watching "Boston's Finest," which airs just before "Southland?" We find it an odd juxtaposition of series -- going from a police reality show in Boston to a scripted police drama in Los Angeles, but perhaps one that works nonetheless. What really upsets us about the two shows going back-to-back is that because one is scripted and one is reality we'll never get a crossover episode. How much fun would that have been?
The TNT resurrected "Southland" finishes its fifth season tonight. See if it doesn't go out with a bang.

Every time "Southland" comes back we are impressed (even if the announcement of its return was made months ago). After airing its first season on NBC, getting renewed, and then getting cancelled before the first episode of the second season even aired, "Southland" was picked up by TNT and will be starting its fifth season tonight. C. Thomas Howell, who had previously been a guest star, will be joining the cast this series as a regular. The rest of the cast includes Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, Regina King and Ben McKenzie, and the show itself focuses on police officers in Los Angeles.

Tonight's episode is entitled 'Thursday,' which exhibits a sort of mirroring with the name of this season's premiere episode, which was 'Wednesday.' We don't know exactly what that mirroring may or may not imply, we merely knows that it, quite potentially, exists. In fact, we are intrigued by the potential and view it as some sort of mystery, or case, if you will. Yes, it's a case, just like the ones the detectives in this series regularly embark upon. We hope that we pursue it with just as much vim and vigor as they do their cases, and work out the appropriate solution before the evildoers get away.

As we have noted in the past, when "Southland" disappeared from NBC's schedule after a second season was ordered but before the second season began, the future didn't look bright for the show. However, TNT picked up the show and not only aired the second season, but also a third... and now will be airing a fourth. That is a pretty impressive feat for a series and if you've ever watched the show you might get a good sense of what the cable network sees in the show. If you haven't ever watched the show, you might want to consider giving it a gander tonight -- it's a cop show, but it really isn't your standard kind of cop show.

We don't want to say that the book is being thrown at "Southland" tonight, but the book is certainly - at least for the time being - closing on "Southland" tonight. The third season of the show (the first season ordered specifically to air on cable), has, after tonight, run through its entire course of 10 episodes That actually makes this the show's longest season by a significant percentage. Will we see more new episodes down the line? One can only speculate.

There are, we imagine, very few folks out there who would have guessed, following NBC's cancellation of "Southland" before the second season, that the show somehow would have managed to get a third, and yet, here we are, happy to to tell you that today "Southland" opens season three. We can't quite call it a Christmas miracle as not only is it now well after Christmas, but we actually knew before Christmas that this would be taking place. Whatever you want to call it, whatever the truth of the matter may be, we are happy to see the show return for a third go-round are curious about how this season - the first conceived of as solely airing on a cable network - changes things.

"Southland" may have had a rocky road getting to season two, but once the season started it took very little time to get to the conclusion. Some may suggest that the series arrived at the second season finale so quickly because the season itself was only six episodes long. While factually accurate, that explanation fails to account for the show's likability and to impart one of those 'good times fly by' sentiments that we were going for. Thanks for that, way to ruin our plan people. Despite your actions, we still urge you to catch the final episode tonight.

"Southland" has travelled something of a bumpy road on its way to season two, having the series premiere announced by NBC, then pushed back a month, and then being cancelled completely without ever airing an episode from the second season. TNT picked up the drama and now that they have finished airing season one, they're going to be taking the wrapper off of the six episode second season tonight. That means that we'll get to see whether TNT's faith in the series is well-founded or if NBC knew something we didn't.
