Many a year ago, a rude, horrible, shallow diva of a model died.  She was then shoved into the body of a larger, brilliant, momentarily dead attorney.  And thus, "Drop Dead Diva" was born.  Think of it kind of like that show Matthew Perry was on back in the day about the guy who couldn't get into heaven or hell because his life was equal parts good and bad (man, we loved that show, it was called "Second Chance," just FYI).  Our attorney with the soul of the diva is looking to live a better life.  And, Kim Kardashian is on tonight.

It is certainly true that once upon a time, more than a year ago, "Drop Dead Diva" was cancelled only to be, just as with its main character, resurrected.  Well, we don't know if there's going to be a third life for the series -- certainly the popular wisdom would argue against it.  Tonight then, the final season of the series launches with back-to-back episodes, a sad state of affairs indeed.  Of course, if Lifetime does resurrect the series for a seventh season (tonight starts the sixth), this will still be a back-to-back episode season premiere, just not the last one.

After reappearing at the beginning of October (the 6th in case you were wondering), "Drop Dead Diva" has run through the final five episodes of its season and is closing tonight.  Forever?  Absolutely not.  The series may have been cancelled following its fourth season, but it's been renewed once more following its fifth season.  Yes, that's right, cancelled after four, renewed after five.  Do not ask too many questions, just accept it and be happy.  But, if you really want to know, it was cancelled and then brought back and now will be brought back again.

The last new episode of "Drop Dead Diva" prior to tonight's new episode of "Drop Dead Diva" aired way back in mid-August.  Okay, that isn't a terribly long time ago, but tonight does herald a new run of episodes leading all the way to the season finale.  Plus, if you think about it, if you were a dead diva and you had to lay about all summer, that would be a long time... at least for the folks around you it would be a long time.  If you were reincarnated however, it might not be such a long time, but we're going slowly astray, so, to summarize, new episodes start tonight.

You might thing that it would be impossible to do a series about how a horrible (but attractive, traditionally-speaking) person dies and gets put into the body of a wonderful (but less traditionally attractive) person and has to figure out how to reinvent who she is as a person.  Or, at the very least, you might think it impossible to do such a series four a full four seasons (with, potentially, more on the way).  Well, guess what?  You'd be wrong.  "Drop Dead Diva" is finishing up its fourth season tonight, proving that you can do just such a show.

One would think that a series which began with the main character's death wouldn't be able to surprise and delight by the end of the second season.  Or, perhaps you would, but we wouldn't necessarily.  Maybe that's why you're smarter than we are.  The upshot is that "Drop Dead Diva" does manage to surprise and potentially (depending on who you are) to intrigue.  Tonight we have a two hour double-episode season finale.  We wonder exactly what stops will be pulled out for it, because we imagine that there are stops and that they will be pulled.

Last season on "Drop Dead Diva" a diva dropped dead and was reborn into the life of a plus-size attorney.  We like to think of it kind of like the movie "Switch," but without the gender change and Ellen Barkin.  Does that make it better?  Let us ask you this - why do you feel the need to label things in that way?  Isn't the show trying to teach us that making such value judgments without getting to know what's on the inside is wrong?  If you keep trying to place such labels on things without trying to get to know what they're really about you just may end up like the diva in question.
