"Criminal Minds" may not be the exact same show it was when it started several years ago (this is season eight, but we don't know whether that makes this the start of year seven or year eight... it's a mental deficiency.  Does that make us a criminal?).  The cast is somewhat different and you can't really do 20+ episodes year without having things change just a little bit.  Even "Law & Order" was kind of different by the end than it was at the beginning (well, not hugely except for that last year or two, but you get our point, don't you?).  Season eight opens tonight.  Get excited (it's not criminal).

Tonight, the 10th season of "Criminal Minds" begins and the show is adding to the cast.  Oh yes, Kerr Smith will be on as a guest star tonight and Jennifer Love Hewitt is joining as a series regular.  How will Hewitt's Kate Callahan, an experienced undercover agent for the FBI, affect the dynamic?  We don't know, but we're going to watch and find out.  Just as we'll find out how Jeanne Tripplehorn's departure might affect things.  This week's episode is entitled "X" which we surmise is titled as much because of the series starting season 10.

Oh yes, it's true, "Criminal Minds" has been on the air for nine seasons and, just about a year from now, we're going to tell you that it's been on the air for 10 seasons.  Yup, "Criminal Minds" will be back in the fall (presumably the fall, certainly during the next television season at some point) with another full season of going into the minds of criminals and, more than once, being a little disturbing.  We don't mean that last bit in a bad way, actually it's pretty good if a show can get inside your head, and this one gets inside ours.  Wait.  Does that mean we operate on the wrong side of the law?  We may have to think on this for a while.

After the huge 200th episode event, last week, "Criminal Minds" offered up a repeat.  We assume that's because they wanted to give us a chance to catch our breath.  Well, they're back tonight and we're going to, perchance, get our first glimpse of what we should expect from the next 200 episodes.  No, they haven't announced that there's going to be another 200 episodes, but anything is possible, especially when you're dealing with the minds of criminals... and that's what they're doing here.

Tonight is the 14th episode of the ninth season of "Criminal Minds."  Or, put another way, it's episode 200.  Do you realize what we're talking about here -- episode 200.  Holy mackerel, that is a whole lot of bad guys doing a whole lot of bad things, and a whole lot of upset our heroes have had to internalize.  Perhaps tonight, one will burst from the distress.  Perhaps they'll just offer up a greatest hits episode.  Or, perhaps, there will be some sort of ultra-bad guy/super-villain thing going on.

Tonight, the BAU gets a new section chief and his name is Esai Morales.  No, wait, that isn't right.  Tonight, the BAU gets a new section chief and his name is Mateo Cruz, he is played by Esai Morales.  Now, the important takeaway message from this is that Esai Morales is joining the series in a recurring role tonight.  Yes, that means that you could skip the episode and see him at a later date, but why would you do that?  Why wouldn't you want to get in at the beginning with his character?  You know that's the right way to go.

Anne Dudek has been on a whole lot of television series, but she is perhaps best known for her role on "House," where she played Dr. Amber Volakis.  Okay, so you don't know her by the name Amber Volakis, we get that, she was often not referred to that way.  What if we called her Cutthroat Bitch?  Gregory House often referred to her as 'Cutthroat Bitch,' even if Wilson called her Amber.  Now do you know her?  Well, tonight, she isn't going to be Amber, she's going to be farmer Emma Kerrigan.  We don't know exactly what she farms, but we are curious to see if she has a criminal mind.

Ummmm... listen, "Criminal Minds" can be something of a dark show and that isn't necessarily for everyone.  There is something about being inside the mind of a criminal that lends itself to darkness.  What then should we make of tonight's two hour finale?  Is it going to be super-duper dark?  Is it going to be extra-dark?  To use Hershey's parlance, is it going to be special dark?  We certainly hope so, we tune into the show because of its darkness.  As we said, that isn't for everyone, but it really can be pretty good (like a Hershey's Special Dark).

Whether or not it is his favorite thing to be known for, Mackenzie Astin starred on "The Facts of Life."  No, he wasn't one of the girls, he was Andy Moffet, that little foster kid that got added in later seasons of the show.  Listen, that's not something you can hate him for, if you were an actor you would have taken the gig as well.  Astin has done a ton of things since then though and tonight he adds more to his resume as a guest star on "Criminal Minds."

Is it still the February Sweep?  We thought that was over, but tonight's guest stars on "Criminal Minds" include William Russ, Kathy Baker, Merle Dandridge, and Fiona Gubelmann.  That is a pretty hefty list of guest stars for a single episode, isn't it?  Well, we think it is anyway.  How they are going to possibly fit all those characters into a single episode?   If you want to know, you'll just have to watch.  We can tell you there will be agents and therapists and parents, but we're not going to break down every guest star's role here and now, that's not the sort of thing we do.

This is it, the big old episode 150.  No longer is Thomas Gibson 'the guy from "Dharma & Greg,"' he's been on this show way longer than he was ever on that one.  Sure, "Dharma & Greg" aired more than 100 episodes, but "Criminal Minds" is now at 150.  150!  If that doesn't blow your mind, we're not sure quite what will.  As series tend to pull out all the stops for big episodes (or important numbered ones) you won't find it surprising to learn that tonight's episode has a number of guest stars including Jay Karnes, Dina Meyer, and Penny Peyser.  We just hope the BAU team can keep their minds on their work this week -- goodness knows that they have to be distracted with this being episode 150 and all.  It would be a shame for the bad guy to get away because of that.

"Criminal Minds," as the series title indicates, is all about getting into the minds of a criminal.  Now, while we've missed the show during its repeat-fest, we haven't exactly been without criminal minds all around us.  Seriously, have you done any holiday shopping?  Have you done any post-holiday shopping?  Have you talked to a rabid football fan about their obviously undeserving team being in the playoffs?  Do any of those things and you'll see a criminal mind come alive.  We have to admit it though, we're happier when the minds stay inside the screen.

We love Charles S. Dutton.  We have loved Dutton from the moment that we first saw him in "Alien 3."  We next loved him on "Roc," and pretty much we've loved him ever since.  Tonight he'll be guest starring on "Criminal Minds" as will Shawn Hatosy and Bellamy Young.  The episode itself centers on a boxing trainer (Dutton) and a boxer (Hatosy), but the specifics are probably less important than the guy who worked with Ripley being on tonight's episode.  Have we mentioned how much we like Dutton and how much you should like him too?

Some people would sit down to watch tonight's "Criminal Minds" solely on the basis that Brigid Brannagh is going to be on.  Now, don't get us wrong, we love watching Brigid Brannagh, but our driving force tonight is Jack Coleman.  That is because, as we said earlier this week, we have chosen to forget every episode of "Heroes" after the first 10 or 15 and consequently remember the series quite fondly.  It is always nice to see someone from a series you remember quite fondly on a different show.  Good old HRG, we miss him and the show we believe "Heroes" was.

Apparently with there being a lockout and all, NFL players are looking to supplement their income.  Dallas Clark has chosen to go into the field of acting, and will be appearing on "Criminal Minds" tonight as a police officer from San Diego.  In this role he'll be helping the nice folks from BAU (shocking that a cop will be helping BAU, we know).  We are interested in the fact that he'll be playing a San Diego cop though, the team couldn't have gone to Indy and made a bunch of thinly-veiled references to Clark's actual profession?  Wouldn't that have been more natural?

You probably know him as Dr. Spencer Reid on "Criminal Minds," but off the set, Reid goes by the name Matthew Gray Gubler.  We're not going to say that this other name is in fact the one he was given at birth by his mother and father, but it is the name he provides in the credits of this series.  Correct name or not, Matthew Gray Gubler directs tonight's episode of "Criminal Minds," an episode which will, yet again, feature A.J. Cook as a returning guest star (she plays JJ on the show and we're convinced that her parents didn't only provide her with the initials A and J as her name at birth).

We are not happy that Adrienne Palicki's last television series was unceremoniously canceled.  In fact, it made us awfully sad.  On the other hand, it does mean that Palicki can appear on this show without feeling like she's two-timing her own series which, not coincidentally, was about two-timing.  Palicki's character wasn't doing the two-timing there, but her character was being two-timed so we're sure she understands just how much that hurts.  Perhaps Palicki is like us, against two-timing but totally for serial monogamy.  Fingers crossed.

There is something dark and disturbing about delving into the criminal mind on a weekly basis.  We firmly believe that doing so has to affect you, change you forever.  We wonder whether, as an actor, portraying someone who delves into the criminal mind changes you as well.  How many steps out do you have to go before the effect weakens?  Does living with an actor who plays someone who delves into the criminal mind change you?  Does it all depend on whether or not the actor is a method actor (or the character a method character)?  None of those questions will be answered  tonight, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't wonder as you watch the season finale.
