Rules of Engagement
May 20, 2013TV Network - CBS
Listen, you can mock "Rules of Engagement" as much as you want to mock "Rules of Engagement," and we kind of assume that's a lot. The truth, however, is this -- the show is finishing its seventh season tonight. Yes, its seventh season. That means that it's doing something right even if the series gets absolutely no respect whatsoever. Maybe, just maybe, now that so many other series have wrapped for the season you should tune in to "Rules" tonight just to see what you've been missing out on these seven seasons. Who knows, an eighth season could be just around the corner. We don't believe that just because it's been cancelled it won't be resurrected.

We are going to assume that you've seen Gail O'Grady before. When? Maybe on "Hellcats" or on "Necessary Roughness" or "The Forgotten," "Boston Legal," Desperate Housewives," "Deuce Bigalow" or one of any other number of movies/television shows. Tonight she'll be on "Rules of Engagement" playing the mother of Russell's date. Presumably some (all) of the jokes here will come from the fact that O'Grady and Spade are roughly the same age. But, wherever the laughs come from, isn't it important that there are laughs? Isn't that the point?

That is right, not only is "Rules of Engagement" back tonight, it's back tonight with the start of season seven. Yup, seven. "Rules of Engagement" has been on television more than twice as long as "Veronica Mars." The series has outlasted the original "Star Trek." Do you even want to know how many years David Spade has been a staple of network sitcom life? Think about it, from "Just Shoot Me" to "8 Simple Rules" to this. That is a long time. How does he still look 12? Maybe we'll learn the secret tonight because he'll be back on TV with the seventh season premiere of "Rules of Engagement."

Oh David Spade, you lovable goof. How is it, Mr. Spade, that you have managed to be on this show and "Just Shoot Me" and "8 Simple Rules" for more than a decade in total? In fact, it's been just about 15 years combined, hasn't it? We congratulate you Mr. Spade on your incredible longevity in the television world. We additionally congratulate you for having been on those three series on three completely different television networks. Your quiet appeal astounds. So, Mr. Spade, as your season finale airs tonight, we'll be drinking a toast to you and your eternal youthfulness.

There are certain television plots which are recycled by virtually every television show that is on the air for a sufficient period of time. One of them is the 'you saved my life so now I have to become your servant' story. Another is the 'weekend murder mystery turns real except that it doesn't' tale. Tonight, "Rules of Engagment" will be doing the 'women use sex to make men do things and a guy figures it out' one. Watch and see if they're able to put it all together in a new and wonderful way, and see if you can't catch references to other shows that have done the same story.

We like to think of "Rules of Engagement" as that little show that just keeps on ticking. Oh sure, it doesn't tend to do something like 24 episodes a season--this season is scheduled for 15--but this is the show's sixth season overall. That, really, no matter how many episodes you're doing, is impressive. Tonight, we've been told, Jeff is going to send Audrey on a 'romantic scavenger hunt.' Yeah, that's not going to go well. You know that's not going to go well, we know it's not going to go well. One wonders why Jeff thinks it might. But, of course, it is because it won't go well that the funny will occur.

CBS is apparently constructing its own rules of engagement, and they involve moving "Rules of Engagement" to Saturday nights, perhaps as a potential bulkhead to start another successful sitcom block, and perhaps only as a way of extending the series' run for another season. Well, they constructed that rule of engagement and then quickly cancelled it after a show we won't mention ("How to be a Gentleman") didn't fare so well on Thursdays nights. So, Spade is back on Thursdays beginning this very evening. Oh yes, you may now rejoice.

As you may be aware, Jeff and Audrey are looking for a surrogate for their baby. Tonight, that search leads them to Pam (Jaime Pressly), potential choice for that role. We have no idea what Pam will be like, but we're certainly hoping that she is just like Pressly's character on "My Name is Earl." Honestly, don't you think that Joy would make a fantastic surrogate? Clearly Joy would solely be in it for the money - there'd be absolutely no chance that she'd want to keep the child. And, if the price was right, she'd probably even stop drinking and smoking during the duration of the pregnancy. What more could you want?

There are certain actors who, when they appear in just about any show, cause us to stand up, take notice, sit down, and watch. Alan Ruck is one of those people, but not in the same way Salma Hayek is. Ruck we just truly enjoy watching do his thing, and watching him guest star as a therapist to Audrey and Jeff is certainly his thing. While we'd like to suggest that if anyone can cause Jeff to think straight and act normally it's Ruck, but despite the man's great power we doubt that he'll fix Warburton's character.

David Spade and company are returning for their fourth season tonight. You might have thought "Rules of Engagement" had already explored all the different facets of relationships that there are to explore over the course of the first three seasons, but no, that's not the case. There's always more to explore about relationships - every time one sex thinks they have the other figured out, a new twist pops up. What matters to us though is the funny, we don't mind learning as long as there's funny to go along with it.
