David Duchovny on 'Californication'

We know we have talked about this before, but it remains as true as ever -- we can't think of David Duchovny without thinking of Bree Sharp and her utterly brilliant song "David Duchovny" in which she ponders why Mr. Duchovny won't love her.  Of course, Hank Moody would love her if Bree had sung to him.  Actually, Hank would probably love her even if she didn't sing to him because that's kind of what Hank Moody does.  Moody likes the ladies and it can cause lots of problems.  See if that isn't so here in the season premiere (and Maggie Grace is doing an arc this season, so that should be fun).

Here we are, at the conclusion of another David Duchovny series.  The man has spent years on our television screens, entertaining us, and we assume that at some point down the line, Duchovny will return with a new endeavor.  He won't be Hank Moody anymore, he won't by Spooky Mulder anymore, but he will be someone new, someone different, someone else.  But, before that happens, do tune in tonight and see how Moody's adventure ends.

To this point, it's been something of a wild ride for Hank Moody.  Oh, not the sort of wild ride that includes black oil, alien abductions, and the cancer man (we refuse to call him CSM, we like cancer man).  No, more the wild ride that includes various forms of debauchery.  Wild, but different sort of wild.  We very much expect that this final season-- and this is the final season--of "Californication" will continue down that track, but can't know for certain without watching.  A mere 12 episodes remain in the tale of Hank Moody and the first of those 12 is tonight.

The amount of trouble that one man can create is unbelievable, but the more we watch Hank Moody cause trouble, the closer we come to becoming a believer.  RZA is going to be appearing in multiple episodes this season (as is Meagan Good) and Hank is going to be working for his character who is awesomely entitled, Samurai Apocalypse.  That's right, RZA is playing a dude named Samurai Apocalypse, You just know that Hank is going to get himself in some awfully hot water with Samurai (or because of this dude), don't you?  But, if Hank wasn't such a troublemaker this series wouldn't really exist, now would it?

Hank Moody is something of a troubled guy, isn't he?  Just when you think that maybe, just maybe he's going to get his life in order and clean himself up, he manages to create a bigger problem than the one he just had.  We're hugely interested in exactly what's going to happen with him on tonight's season finale -- will it be a solution, a bigger problem, or perhaps both?  Don't worry if it turns out to be a larger problem, the show has been renewed for a fifth season and we'll get to see just how he approaches any new issue then.

Sitting in regular rotation on our iPod is this fantastic song by Bree Sharp called "David Duchovny" which is all about the singer's obsession with the star of the same name (this is during his "The X-Files" days).  Oft repeated in the song is the line 'David Duchovny, why won't you love me?'  Our understanding is that Hank Moody, Duchovny's character here, absolutely would love her, it's this problem that he's dealing with in the series.  Honestly, we sometimes kind of wish Duchovny would love us too, and Bree Sharp, ever since we heard that song we're kind of obsessed with her.
