Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz on 'Bones'

Through the years, "Bones" has offered up to us more than one recurring killer through the years.  For us, and probably a bunch of other folks, Gormogon will always be king.  But, some out there might make a compelling argument that Christopher Pelant (introduced in season seven) is a better baddie.  Pelant is back tonight and tormenting Hodgins and Angela.  We are still on the fence about Pelant and hope that tonight's episode pushes us one way or the other.

The time may have come for us to stop comparing David Boreanaz's run on "Bones" to his combined run on "Buffy" and "Angel."  After all, he has now done this show longer than he was on those two series.  Yup, he's been Booth way longer than he was ever Angel.  On the other hand, when you think of Boreanaz, do you think of him here or do you think of him all broody and everything as a vampire who can never experience true happiness?  Okay, we'll stick with the comparisons for a while and we'll have the chance to do them again next year because even if "Bones" has its season finale tonight, it'll be back again next year for season 10.

We don't know how many times "Bones" has been threatened with Friday nights or moved there briefly or aired repeats there and generally confused us, but we'll tell you this -- "Bones" is back on Mondays as of tonight.  And, not only that, but "Bones" is going to be back with a whole new season in the fall.  Who knows, maybe next year the show will do the full season on Friday nights.  But for now, it's Mondays until the season ends.

Last season, "Bones" ended rather badly.  Or, it ended badly if you're a 'shipper and let's face it, by the end of eight full seasons of the series, who isn't a 'shipper?  We presume that things will get ironed out over the course of season nine, but who knows, we could be wrong.  It could be that what has been torn asunder no man (or woman or course of events) will be able to repair.  We certainly hope not, we hope these crazy kids are able to put their love back together, but we don't know, we just don't know.

We have talked about this before, but it still hurts us -- "Bones" has been on longer than "Angel."  David Boreanaz has been on this show longer than he was on "Angel."  That just doesn't seem right.  Now, a check of IMDb tells us that Boreanaz played Angel (between "Buffy" and the spinoff) in 166 TV episodes.  So, he hasn't been Booth quite that long, but he's going to get there and he's going to get there quickly as tonight is episode 150 of "Bones."  Probably that means that it's time to put the band back together and do a reunion movie.  That Joss Whedon fellow isn't working on anything else, is he?

Tonight's episode of "Bones" is called 'The Bod in the Pod.'  To us, that implies one of two things -- first is that this ought to have been a Halloween-timed episode as it features pod people, and second that someone on the show is pregnant.  The series has certainly already done the latter, but we won't swear that the former isn't the case.  Let us ask you though, does it really matter?  Do you really care what the title here might refer to?  Isn't it just much more important that the show stars Angel and Emily Deschanel?  We think so.

We see a world in which Temperance Brennan straps the baby into a mei-tai and takes the young one out to crime scenes.  Oh, don't worry, many people out there will tell you it's a completely logical decision.  Many people (please, don't assume that we're playing favorites and advocating one course of action/brand over another, we're not) will say that a mei-tai is a superior conveyance for babies than a Baby Bjorn and that staying close to the mother at all times, even at a gruesome crime scene, is exceptionally beneficial for an infant.  How is that?  Did we sound just a little bit like Bones there?

If you're a fan of "Bones" you're well aware that prior to this new child showing up, Booth already had a boy, a fine lad named Parker.  Well, Parker's been in England but he's going to be back tonight.  That, dear friends, gives the show the opportunity to explore the whole question of just how an old child adjusts to a new child, particularly a new child who is only a half-sibling not a full sibling.  "Bones" may not have done this exact story before, but they've had a tendency to deal with similar issues quite well in the past.  Let's see how they do this week.

First there was Booth.  Then there was Bones.  Then there was Bones and Booth.  Or, perhaps Bones came first and then Booth, whatever the case may be individually, they eventually came together to solve a whole bunch of crimes, years and years worth of crimes.  Well, the relationship is continuing (and more crimes will be solved) in this whole new season of Bones and Booth mayhem.  We always find ourselves feeling a little bad for Booth as his name isn't in the title, but we imagine that he's more okay with that oversight than we are.

Is it hard for anyone else out there to believe that David Boreanaz has been on "Bones" longer than he was on "Angel?"  It's not quite at the point yet where he'll have played Booth longer than he played Angel, but that moment (if our math is right) is rapidly approaching.  To us that's pretty amazing as we'll always seem him as the good vampire with the soul except for when he lost the soul and went evil, Angel.  It is not that we don't respect his work here, we certainly do, but we're "Buffy" people.

It's always nice to see a show like "Bones" do a recurring bad guy thing.  All too often series like these, no matter how good the writing and characters may be, end up giving short shrift to the bad guys because they're only there for a single episode and obviously the majority of the screen time is devoted to the regulars not the baddie of the week.  Vosloo is getting multiple episodes on the show which means that we're going to get a really good idea of who this baddie is, and who better than Vosloo to do the bad?

Some would say that you should watch this episode because Ryan O'Neal is back.  Other would say to tune in because Patricia Belcher will be on again.  Those are both good reasons, but the fact that this week marks the third of David Boreanaz's directorial efforts on the series trumps them both.  Watch as Boreanaz directs Boreanaz and hones the actor's general Boreanaz-ness.  He'll almost certainly help Deschanel with her Deschanel-ness, but we figure that Boreanaz is probably more on top of Boreanaz's Boreanaz-ness than Deschanel's Deschanel-ness (and don't even get us started on Boreanaz's Deschanel-ness and Deschanel's Boreanaz-ness).

Winnick, as you may know, is playing Booth's girlfriend this season, but, perhaps oddly, Antonio Sabato Jr. isn't playing Brennan's boyfriend.  We definitely would have set it up like that because it would allow for the would-be couple to actually be when Winnick and Sabato Jr. find each other and fall head over heels in love.  That would have been pure genius.  Instead, Sabato Jr. is playing a bouncer at a Jersey Shore nightclub.  That doesn't necessarily seem inappropriate, but our way of organizing things is definitely better.  Maybe next time the series will get it right.  Sigh... we can only hope.
