Pre-credit sequence. I'm not going to miss Pete [an uninteresting exit interview]. Will anybody from Dangrayne? Abi will! It's The Morning After and she's whining about the "brutality" of Tribal Council. She declares that their behavior towards her wasn't "cute." [Monkey!] Denise says that Abi's next to go, unless she "miraculously" wins Immunity, but since she wanted to introduce that possibility, she might as well tell us who would be the next target in the event of said miracle. That'd be Jonathan Penner. That's what we so often call "foreshadowing," kids.

Sympathy for the Devil. Malcolm and Abi go out to collect Tree-Mail and Malcolm's suddenly feeling pity for the complainer. She's crying and he's hugging her and... I'm not feeling sympathy. Sorry. "Abi's very un-self-aware. It's hard not to feel a little sympathy for her," Malcolm insists. They each have envelopes. Messages from home? Nope! Cash-money. It's time for a food auction. Abi's planning on sitting back, saving her money for when she can get something good. "I'm a fighter. I'm a survivor," Abi swears.

Irritable Bowel Auction. Each player has $500. Why? Doesn't that seem a bit excessive for an auction in a cash-starved country? They could play with... $20 bucks and bid in increments of $1. Or why not play with a BILLION dollars? Anywho... Up first? Pancakes and bacon and orange juice. Denise wants the meat and carbs and she goes all-in, spending $500 on her breakfast. Up next? A wine-and-cheese platter. Without a second's thought, Skupin pays $500. "I am not a drinker," Skupin admits. I... don't understand that. It's dairy and alcohol. This isn't going to sit well in your stomach. Iced coffee and donuts find people getting a bit more cautious, as Malcolm only has to pay $200 for his future sugar-and-caffeine crash. The next item is a covered tray. Penner bids $100 and gets fried chicken and fries. He's happy. Orgasmically happy. Time for a second covered item, which Man-Dana gets for $200. It's a stuffed baked potato, but Probst offers him the chance to trade it for rice and beans for the tribe. Because he correctly takes the collective goods, I'm gonna call him "Carter" for a while. I don't know how hungry I would be for a baked potato to be enough to keep me from helping the tribe. A pizza? Sure. We could talk about backstabbing my chums. But a baked potato? Come on. A third covered tray goes to Blair Warner for $320. It's a huge subway sandwich and she has a food orgasm of her own. That sandwich might have been enough to get me to tell Probst to shove his beans-and-rice. Abi bids $500 and gets "an advantage in the game." See? Abi's not so dumb. "There's no compassion towards me here. I have to have compassion towards myself," Abi says. Carter gets a second tray for $200. It contains veal shanks for the entire tribe. They pass the veal around and devour it by hand. And that's it.

Debbie Downer. "Everybody was a winner," cheers Penner as they return to camp after Reward. With the castaways happy, it's the perfect moment for Abi to ruin everything by demanding that Penner apologize to her. "I was demoralized. I was pointed fingers at. I was ganged-up on," she complains. "In a game, if you are that blunt, that honest, it can feel off-putting. So you might have been friendlier," Penner says. "I'm sorry, but it is really hard not to laugh at some of the things she says," Blair Warner says of Abi. Penner knows that if Abi continues to be awful, nobody would dare think of flipping away from him, so he simultaneously encourages her, while also giving her the least deserved hug ever. Abi thinks that her "advantage" is a valuable tool and that people are realizing they need to negotiate with her. But what is the note and what is the advantage? She gets to move directly to the final round in they challenge, giving her a 1-in-3 chance of winning. That's a good prize, but Abi suggests it may be time to bluff on the actual contents of the note.

Hidden Illusory Idol. The imaginary early bird gets the imaginary worm. The next morning, Abi wakes up early. She's going to play around with them and make up a Hidden Immunity Idol, thinking she's going to make her stand as a warrior. Lounging on the bamboo, Abi tells Malcolm that she doesn't think she's going home at the next Tribal. Initially, Malcolm isn't buying it and compares Abi to the ex-girlfriend who won't leave you alone, but also isn't banging you. Abi comes right out and tells Malcolm that she's already found another Idol. He doesn't seemed surprised and just says "fancy."

Cutting the Gordian Knot. Immunity is back up for grabs. Carter gives up his necklace. As we know, it's a multi-stage challenge, with each contestant attached to a rope and weaving through various obstacles. Five people advance past the first stage. Then two. In a twist, Probst will ask a question before each round and if they answer incorrectly, they'll get five percent of their body weight added through the rest of the competition. Probst asks Abi to read her note and... She bluffs! She says there are two messages and she's only reading the second. And then she tears it into tiny pieces. Probst bluffs along with her. Blair Warner and Denise get weight for the first stage. [Wait. How am I only just now realizing that Denise is a tiny Carrot Top?] The weight doesn't hurt Denise, who advances along with Carter, Skupin, Malcolm and.... Penner. Denise picks up more weight for the second stage, along with Skupin and Carter. More ropes and sticks. Penner advances along with... Carter. So now it's Carter (with 10 percent of his body weight now) against Penner and Abi. Untying knots, Abi gets out to a lead, which keeps growing. Who knew she was such a knot-untying maniac? "You gotta be freaking kidding me," Denise says. Abi wins Immunity! "What a journey it has been," Jeff Probst tells her. And ugh.

Blair Warner is NOT very good at this game. Oy. Abi's gonna be smug, isn't she? "I couldn't ask for a more convenient excuse to get rid of a real threat in this game," Malcolm acknowledges. And that threat? Penner, duh. Everybody else agrees to write Penner's name down and Blair Warner says, "I'm just not cut out for this game." Everybody laughs. But Blair Warner has a true conflict, because she doesn't want to hurt somebody she cares about. "I think it's too big for me," Blair Warner cries to the camera. "I'm not very good at this game," Blair Warner pouts to Penner, who tells her to "cut the crap" and pulls her aside. Blair Warner tells Penner that she wanted to be aligned with him, but when he wouldn't commit, she committed to somebody else and that she's been told to write down his name. This is true. She also tells him again that she's not good at this game. This is also true. Penner is ticked off. "Lisa, once again, lost her mind," Penner says. "I think her guns are ridiculous," Penner says of the firearms to which Blair Warner is sticking. "I would say, 'Go do that magic that you do,'" is Blair Warner's advice. So Penner puts on his hat and goes to work. Penner credits Denise and Malcolm for duping Blair Warner, which isn't exactly right. He takes responsibility for his own error in playing both sides, which is far closer to right. "I did not choose a side," he owns. Penner sits down, tells Abi and Carter that he's voting for Denise. They seem to agree. Once again, it's all on Skupin,  swing vote once again. Skupin knows that he's going to potentially gain or potentially lose three jury votes however he goes. "I believe strongly that I could beat Penner in the Final 3," Skupin says. Believe what you want, sir!

Tribal Council. Abi gives Jury Pete a big wink and says it was the best $500 she'd spent in her life. Denise tries to give a diplomatic response to ganging up on Abi at the last Tribal. Penner outs the Skupin-Warner-Malcolm-Denise Final 4 alliance and starts a grumble to sway Skupin and Blair Warner, who he says he's bonded with. "I would hope we're in your heart, too," Malcolm tells Blair Warner, Laying it out, Penner tells Blair Warner and Skupin that a vote against him hands the million to either Malcolm or Denise. "Thanks buddy," Malcolm whispers, sarcastically. Blair Warner says this reminds her of a situation from her life that's too personal to discuss and she cries merely thinking of that decision. Skupin wants to be great friends with everybody, but he wants to win a million bucks.

The vote. "I hope you go home tonight. Look who's judging now," Abi smirks, writing Denise's name down. Then she can't properly fold her vote and she leaves it on the table. Penner gets to the table, reads his vote for "Denise" sarcastically aloud to the amusement of Probst and the Jury. Has that ever happened before? "Wonderful," Penner says when Probst goes to tally. He thinks extensive sarcasm is gonna sway people? The votes: Denise. Denise. Penner. Penner. Denise. Penner. PENNER. "Yeah," he says, standing up and hugging Carter. "Can I have a hug too? Abi asks. "Yeah, I'm not gonna hug anybody else," Penner tells her. Excellent. "Keep your sunny side up and suck eggs," are Penner's departing words of wisdom, as he leaves whistling. Probst shrugs. "It's been fun and extremely painful," are Penner's closing words.

Bottom Line. I shall miss Jonathan Penner. Always quotable. Always smart. Never quite smart enough. [We can debate, for example, whether the game was worth the candle on his vote for "Denies."] This one was pretty simple. He was offered an alliance with the flimsy, wiggly swing votes. All he had to do was lock in Skupin and Blair Warner and negotiate around that. It wouldn't have put him in any position of power, but do you honestly think that under THESE circumstances, he wouldn't have been able to sway Carter and Abi and lived to fight another week? Of course he would have. Oh well. In the balance, Penner played impressively to even make it to this point. He could have gone out any of a half-dozen times this season. What's interesting is that his failure to maneuver was what did him in, but it was a gaffe and now he's stuck with it. And who'd have guessed Abi would be a knot-unraveling idiot savant? I'll leave it for y'all to debate if this key challenge win elevates Abi to the level of potentially returnable pantheon villains, or if she's still just a distasteful slug who did something smart with her food auction cash. [You'll recall that Troyzan did the exact same thing last year when he was the person everybody hated at the food auction, winning Immunity and forcing the eviction of Leif. So it's not like this isn't something that happens on "Survivor" with semi-frequency. She didn't suddenly become Geena Davis or some other Mensa scholar.] I suspect that Abi's nefarious legacy -- I don't think any sort of redeemed or even fully validated legacy is possible -- could be cemented if that Hidden Immunity Idol bluff has any legs. I can't seriously imagine the intelligent remaining players believing that for $500, Abi bought both a massive Immunity advantage AND the only clue to an Idol. If she can make that ludicrousness gain traction, she'd deserve some credit. Ditto if she wins another Immunity or two, though in the event of another Abi win, it would just be a swift no-brainer vote against Carter, so Abi would have to win another Immunity after that before actually making anybody sweat again. We'll see. It all made for an entertaining episode, though losing Penner is a blow.

What'd you think of Thursday's episode? And have you revised your thoughts on Abi?

I was so pissed Abi survived instead of Penner. I think I would rather be on a team with The Governor.

Blair Warner seems dead set on finishing 3rd or 4th in the game. I was hoping someone besides Penner would realize that Denise and Malcom are the type of people who WIN ALL THE JURY VOTES in Survivor.

Carter is dumb as nails. Abi is less likable than a serial killer. Skupin has no self awareness. Penner always has a huge target on his back. These are the type of people Lisa should've want to go to the final 3 with.

sauloccl I'm glad that Abi somehow managed to survive. I think this cast is the best since Survivor Gabon (excluding Heroes v. Villains, of course)... but they're definitely making stupid decisions when it comes to the final. Why would someone want to go to the final with Malcolm and Denise? Or anyone else besides Abi? I'll root for Abi even more next week because Man-Dana seems to be one of the dumbest characters to ever play the game... and all this season does not need is another J.T. (Survivor Tocantins) type of winner.

People may not belive Abi's lie about another HII, but I got to applaud her for trying at least. And Jeff Probst for not laughing out loud when she did that. It may be too late for her but at least she started to play the game.

      Jobin00 Saul,
She was "playing the game" when she alienated her dominate tribe alliance, voted off RC, and targeted Skupin. She's just not a good player.

Also, it was pretty clear the producers wanted to keep her around in the game. The first two legs were much harder athletically, and the 3rd leg was just knots. Not saying it was something tailored to her, but it was clearly the easiest leg for someone with a bad knee. Also, the usually end with a puzzle of some sort (remember Penner's snake puzzle win, for example) in those type of challenges, and they didn't.

I could be wrong, but based on Jeff's recap of the questions, it didn't appear Abi even had to answer the final question, and was able to run it without added weight based on that bought "advantage."

bbq_hax0r Blair Warner is just a terrible player. Her saying she's not cut out for this game was spot-on. If she someone how wins I'm going to extremely annoyed. Perhaps even disgruntled.

It will be interesting to see what happens when/if it gets to 2v2 (Blair/Skupin v. Malcolm/Denise). Will it go to drawing stones or fire making because I'd favor Denise/Malcolm over Blair in that circumstance.

I love Penner but he really screwed himself. Survivor 101, if someone offers you an alliance then you accept. Especially with someone like Lisa who truly values her word. If Penner had accepted then she never would have voted against him and he would have easily made the final four.

      Jobin00 You nailed it.

Penner could have always broke away from that alliance had he wanted, since Lisa and etc. had already done that to him twice before in the game.

He could have simply explained "I decided to turn on you first this time, rather than waiting for you to flip on me."

      November 29, 2012 at 11:08AM EST
    • "If someone offers you an alliance then you accept." Wasn't that also Jim's advice for Pam in dealing with Dwight Schrute?

Maybe I'm misremembering but didn't Probst get the Abi hate parade going last week at tribal? Not that she doesn't deserve it.

I don't think anyone bought her act about a new HII. I'm surprised Probst didn't out her immediately but it shouldn't matter. I doubt she'll win immunity again and will be on her way to Ponderosa.

I agree with MRMOJO that Penner screwed up by not going into the alliance. He was feeling way too safe which really baffles me. It's true Malcolm and Denise would be bad to have sitting beside you in finals but there's lots of time to deal with them. He should have known he'd be on the block.

I'm getting sick of Blair and her comments about how she's not cut out for the game. Did she really think she was going to go far without lying to or betraying someone? What show does she think she's on?

And what's with the food auction? They used to have disgusting dishes that people would unknowingly blow all their money on. Every single thing was edible. The game has really gotten soft...

Abi deserves a smidge of credit for doing what she had to do to stay in the game. Still a slug.

I didn't find Denise's response about ganging up to be very diplomatic. She could have been less hurtful but that would have meant being less truthful and Denise doesn't roll that way.

I'm not 100% positive but pretty sure that Jonathan was actually whistling the Survivor vote-off music as he walked away. I haven't had a chance to go back and listen. If true, I might love him even more than I already did. Bummed to see him go out but I don't find anyone but Abi to be a completely unlikable potential winner. I can't remember the last time that happened.

I knew Penner was going to go home based on that earlier decision because why else would the producers/editors add that into the episode unless it mattered later?

So, he has only himself to blame. He knew that Lisa would keep her word and I don't buy the idea that he wasn't sure. He just didn't want to commit to an alliance with someone he didn't believe would make it far enough to help him.

Unfortunately for Lisa, because she is honest and keeps her word, I think there is no way anyone will want to keep her around for the final three. I don't see how anyone can beat her in the final vote. Everyone on the jury would vote for her.

Jobin00 Behind Abi, I think Lisa is the person LEAST likely of the rest of the players to get any final votes.

No one is going to respect her gameplay at all. And her whiny "I hate being dishonest and voting people off" seems to be REALLY annoyed people in the game as much as it does us at home.

      November 29, 2012 at 11:07AM EST
    • Jeff_avatar_2_talkback_profile

Mulderism I agree. Lisa is inconsistent with her self-righteousness. And if it ever comes out that she was on a TV show she's sunk in terms of winning.

Razorback Every year the people annoyed by someone who plays meekly predict that person has no shot at winning. They are almost always wrong.

      November 29, 2012 at 1:41PM EST
    • Default-avatar

Jobin00 I didn't say Lisa had no shot of winning.

I just don't see how Lisa can make a better case than others left in the game (besides Abi) that she deserves to win at this point.

And going forward, we also know that Lisa is unlikely to pull off any blindsides or strategic moves that are going to get credit from the jury, because she's so very conflicted over playing the game.

Again, trying to predict the jury is always nearly impossible up until the final tribal, because of the edits, and because we have no idea what people will base their votes on.

Why do you think Lisa is such a threat in the final 3, that people wouldn't want to keep her around?

      November 29, 2012 at 1:56PM EST
    • Machoman_talkback_profile

bbq_hax0r The smart play would be for Skupin/Blair to get Carter in their alliance and go to the final with him. Of course, those two haven't been shown as the brightest players, but thats what they ought to do.

I'm not sold on the whole "Malcolm and Denise are unbeatable" stuff. Malcolm is likable but not a great talker. Denise may have rubbed a couple people wrong. I feel like Scupin could easily win the jury over.

Jobin00 I think Malcolm has always been able to talk and express himself really well at tribal councils. When has he put his foot in his mouth?

The only person who looks like an awful talker is Carter, with Lisa/Abi we already know are a confusing mess when they try to articulate things.

The only thing we know about Denise's social game was from the last tribal at their intial tribe when Malcolm boasted about how well Denise gets along with everyone.

Robin I think that final three would be a really interesting one. But I don't think Skupin could win.

He'd have RC and Lisa. He might get Penner.

I can't see Abi, Pete, Artis, or Jeff Kent voting for Skupin. Kent does not want a returning player to win under any circumstance. Abi, Pete, and Artis have all expressed personal dislike against Skupin multiple times, and Abi and Pete both seem to have had an affinity towards Malcolm while they were all in the game.

Carter is a complete mystery as to who he would vote for.

      Am I forgetting someone?

Dan I never understood what Skupin did to upset Pete and Artis. Was it trading for the rice in that challenge? I remember Pete at one point saying Skupin is the worst returning player ever and it made no sense at the time.

Jobin00 I think right now the only people I'm pretty confident have no chance of winning are Abi and Lisa. Abi for obvious reasons, and Lisa for her wishy-washy, breaking alliances, spilling the beans about everything, and "I'm not cut out for this game" whining.

Everyone else has made strategic moves on their own to get them where they are in the game, none of the remaining players (besides Abi) that we've seen are unlikeable among the tribe.

The only other person who could have been seen as a possible follower is Carter, because he's always had Kent and Penner telling him what to do.

bbq_hax0r Think this could be the first time (if I recall correctly) that a third finalist gets a vote? Apparently Pete hinted at how a bunch of little things became big things that annoyed people in Yellow before the merge during his exit interview with Dan. Could be vanity speaking, but he did suggest there was a lot of drama they could have but didn't show.

Next week will hinge on how intelligent/perceptive Malcom is. Here's the Holmesian deduction:

    1) Abi gets the advantage note.
    2) Before the challenge, Abi comes to Malcom and says she got another idol.
    3) At the challenge, she makes a big point of hinting at another clue and then destroys the note.
    4) She works her ass off to win the challenge. For someone who was so cocky about finding an idol earlier, why did she fight for her life?

    Hopefully Malcom calls her bluff.

Robin Having an HII has never really affected how much a person fights for to win an immunity challenge. And in this particular case, Abi needs every single immunity idol she could get, and the whole tribe knows it.

Jobin00 Abi WAYYYY overplayed her hand, there is no way anyone believes her "I have an idol too" BS. She didn't sell it at all.

Even if Malcolm believes she has the idol, then can split the votes 2 vs 2, with Abi/Carter voting together that is another 2. No one plays the idol, and they vote out Abi.

But as Dan pointed out, the possibility of idol really just gives Malcolm and excuse to take out Carter first, which would be the better gameplay since he's been doing really well in challenges.

      November 29, 2012 at 11:25AM EST
    • Robin... you're right in most cases, but Abi has been the epitomy of laziness and I doubt she'd have given max effort if she had the security of an idol in her pocket. Easy for me to say since I'm part of the all-seeing audience, but I'd like to think that'd be my read on her.

Andrew 2 What are you talking about? Why would having an idol make her try any less harder? 6 days of immunity > 3 days of immunity.

      November 29, 2012 at 1:23PM EST
    • Just my gauge of Abi's personality. I think if she really had an idol, she'd have slacked in the challenge and then used the idol to try and take out Denise. I see her being driven by spite more than smarts.

Andrew 2 Fair enough, but one could also argue based on the personality we've seen, she would have been resigned to going home and bid money on the food at the auction. Especially given how much we know she likes showing off that food to others.

Dan Enough to know that she should save her money at auction to maybe purchase an item that would help her, rather than splurge on food.

Don't get me wrong, I think she's a bad player and borderline autistic in her failure to recognize how her behavior impacts other people, but I also don't think she's as dumb as the edits make her appear. I mean, a lot of the editing made Skupin seem like a clumsy moron in the early part of the season.

    • You are talking about Mike "Fell in the Fire" Skupin. How much editing did they really have to do?

Dan Not just the clumsy part. They also made him seem, shall we say, less than smart.

Ted I would suspect she is lying if she doesn't show the idol. It's like robber with a "gun" under his jacket. There is no good reason NOT to show it. With the pressure to show it, I believe she will attempt to create a crude idol and try to pass it off as a real one. That will be fun!

I hated to see Penner go last night, but I think he played it so wrong. Why did he decide on Denise instead of trying to go after Malcolm? Wouldn't a better sell to Skupin have been to blindside Malcolm and get rid of both a huge threat to win it all AND a known immunity idol? Sure, it could've blown up at tribal and something might have been said to make Malcolm pay his idol and Penner goes home anyway. But at least they would've flushed out that idol. It boggles my mind that NO ONE seems concerned that such a huge threat also has an idol in his back pocket.

Dan Possible Penner had no chance from the start and producers wanted to make it seem like they were flipping. I feel like if Malcolm was actually worried he could have played the HII for Denise considering Penner announced who he was voting for. That alliance of 4 is solid and not breaking.

Andrew 2 Producers ruined it for me when they had the Denise clip that "Penner is gone" if there is a miracle and Abi wins. Why show that? Once Abi wins, it becomes incredibly dramatic to watch the scrambling and really have no idea who's going home.

bbq_hax0r Penner was funny at tribal, but it seemed like he knew he had lost. Once he announced who he was voting for it was pretty obvious he was going home.

In my mind, Skupin literally has no shot to win the game if he turned on Lisa/Malcolm/Denise last night. He already does not have the jury vote of Artis, and one has to assume Pete and Abi can be grouped into there.

So now if he backstabs Denise and Malcolm, he probably loses their jury votes, too. Literally no chance to win if he votes off Denise last night.

Not that I think he has much of a chance now, but last night would have sealed his fate if he kept Penner around.

    • You're 100% right as to why Skupin couldn't flip. He'd have had no shot against Penner or Carter in front of the jury.

    "Has that ever happened before?"

Yes, I think someone loudly voted for Randy during Survivor: Gabon.

sauloccl That's my favorite season. Crystal yells her comments for Randy so loud that everybody can hear them:
"You made my life hell from day 1. Go home. Good bye!"

When is the last time you can use the idol? Is it 5?

Regardless I don't see where the jury votes are for Abi, Carter or Lisa. That leaves Skupin, Malcolm, or Denise. If that's the final 3 I think we can, with confidence, say the voting will be

    Skupin - RC, Lisa
Malcolm - Pete, Abi, Penner (he will vote for the best player), Jeff Kent
    Denise - ?

    Wild cards - Artis, Carter

I think the edit of this season is Malcolm, but I could be totally wrong.

Just a side note. I just saw that Abi is 32!! I thought she was an early 20s kid that was just immature and didn't understand "couth." Geez at 32 you should know how to act.

Robin I totally agree that Penner will vote for the best player. I just wonder who he'll decide that was. I don't think it's a lock he'll think Malcolm deserves to win.

What's really interesting is that this might be the first year where we have a FT of 3 where ALL of the players get votes.

duncan In China they all got a toe. Amanda got 1, Courtney 2, and Todd the rest but in no other one did that happen.

Do agree that this has the chance to be the closest final tribal between all 3. A tie has a good chance.

I gained some respet for Abi last night. Yes, she's awful, but she's doing things to remain in the game, she's not a quitter like Naonka. Although, I was shocked to learn that Abi is 32! I thought she was in her early twenties, this makes her behaviour so much worse. And no, it's not cultural, my neighbors are a brasilian family and they're full of positive energy and very generous people.
