ABC renews 'The Middle' and 'Dancing with the Stars'

'Nashville' and 'Suburgatory' are among the ABC shows still waiting

Two of the most successful shows left out of ABC's Thursday Night Renewal-Fest received good news on Friday (May 9) morning.

ABC has announced that long-running reality hit "Dancing with the Stars" and Wednesday comedy stalwart "The Middle" have both been picked up for the 2014-2015 seasons.

For "The Middle," this renewal is for Season 6, while for "Dancing" it's for Season 19.

After not renewing anything for the entire spring, Thursday saw pickups for "Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal," "Resurrection," "Once Upon a Time," "Castle," "Modern Family" and "The Goldbergs." Read more here.

ABC also picked up a second season for "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Read more about that renewal here.

That left ABC with a number of shows still on the bubble.

Sepinwall reported this morning that both "Mixology" and "Trophy Wife" have apparently been cancelled, not that ABC is confirming. Read more here.

Shows currently in limbo include "Nashville," "Suburgatory" and "Last Man Standing," though ABC promises "some additional news later today."

Stay tuned!

TV Ratings: Low 'Big Bang Theory' leads sluggish Thursday, while 'Surviving Jack' finale rises

'Black Box' and 'Bad Teacher' continue to dip

Fast National ratings for Thursday, May 8, 2014.

Spring doldrums hit Thursday primetime hard, with big audience drops for most primetime offerings, including CBS' "Big Bang Theory," which had its weakest night in recent memory. Of course, even a historically weak "Big Bang Theory" was still able to lead Thursday in all measures and carry CBS to comfortable primetime wins.

Among the other shows posting big audience declines on Thursday were "Grey's Anatomy," "Bad Teacher" and "Black Box," while NBC's "American Comedy Awards" was no match for last week's IHeartRadio award show.

On the positive side, FOX's "American Idol" had a slight rebound from last week's Thursday low, while the newly cancelled "Surviving Jack" got a solid bump for what seems to be its series finale. If these numbers hold up, "Surviving Jack" will end the week as FOX's most-watched comedy and tied with "New Girl" in the key demo.

On to the numbers...

ABC orders 'How to Get Away with Murder,' 'Selfie,' 'Galavant' and more

'Black-ish,' 'American Crime,' 'The Whispers' and 'Manhattan Love Story' also get orders

After remaining quiet all spring, ABC monopolized the attentions of the nation's TV critics on Thursday (May 8) with an evening full of big announcements.

You can read about seven of the network's renewals here, as ABC extended its relationship with "Scandal," "Grey's Anatomy," "Modern Family" and more. Fortunately, despite all of these renewals, ABC still has a number of bubble shows waiting for news on Friday, which means more content.

And you can also read about ABC's renewal of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and pickup for "Marvel's Agent Carter" here.

But like the game show host says... That's not all!

In addition to "Marvel's Agent Carter," ABC gave series orders to dramas "How To Get Away With Murder," "American Crime," "The Whispers" and "Forever."

On the comedy side, "Black-ish," "Manhattan Love Story" and "Selfie" earned series orders.

And on the musical comedy fairy tale front? Well, ABC only picked up one musical comedy fairy tale, "Galavant."

Let's go through the shows, shall we?

ABC renews 'Scandal,' 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Castle' and more

'Nashville,' 'The Middle' and 'Suburgatory' are all still in limbo

The last network to make any pick-ups this spring, ABC got down to business on Thursday (May 8) night, running through a series of renewals, mostly quite predictable.

ABC renews 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' and orders 'Agent Carter' from Marvel

Hayley Atwell reprises her 'Captain America' role in the period drama

In a pairing so logical we're giving them their own story, ABC announced on Thursday (May 8) night that it is renewing "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and ordering the new drama "Marvel's Agent Carter."

"Marvel's Agent Carter" stars "Captain America" veteran Hayley Atwell. Set in 1946, it's the story of Peggy Carter's post-WWII work with the covert Strategic Scientific Reserve, as she balances being a single woman in 1940s America, while also going on secret missions for Howard Stark.

While Atwell's involvement is confirmed, ABC makes no mention of whether or not Dominic Cooper will return for the Stark role. Michele Fazekas & Tara Butters will serve as show runners, with Steve McFeely & Christopher Marcus, and Jeph Loeb also executive producing.

There has been some speculation that ABC was planning to use "Agent Carter" as a bridge between halves of the second "S.H.I.E.L.D." season, but we thought the same thing about "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" until it got its own slot on Thursdays and flopped.

Although hardly the blockbuster ABC might have dreamed of, "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is averaging 10.74 million viewers and a 4.1 rating among adults 18-49 in Live+7 DVR figures.

ABC announced a slew of other renewals and pickups on Thursday night and I'm just beginning to dig my way through them, so stay tuned for future stories...

Recap: 'American Idol' Season 13 - Top 4 Results

Which singers will get to sing for home fans this week?

"American Idol" time!

Are we all excited?

My father is. If Alex Preston survives tonight's cut and returns home to New Hampshire, my dad is planning on going to his rally. Or that's what my dad says. He also insists he voted for Alex 50 times last night, so it's possible he's just kidding. Or maybe he just appreciates how easy "Idol" had made it to vote this season.

So will Alex stick around?

Will we be able to get through more than two picks in the NFL Draft during this time?

NBC orders 'Constantine,' 'Mysteries of Laura' to series

The Cristin Milioti/Ben Feldman comedy 'A to Z' also gets an order

It's a pretty glorious day for DC Comics' TV team.

Just one hour after The CW officially announced series orders for "The Flash" and "iZombie," NBC chimed in by ordering "Constantine" to series.

Oh and NBC also sent the drama "The Mysteries of Laura" and the comedy "A to Z" to series, but since they have nothing to do with comic books, we're somehow less interested.

'Tomorrow People,' 'Carrie Diaries' and 'Star-Crossed' won't be back

Add The CW to the list of networks doing early housekeeping before next week's Upfronts.

On Thursday (May 8) morning, one week before it will announce its full schedule to advertisers, The CW four new series pickups for next season, renewed three established series and, in the process, confirmed that three bubble shows will not be returning next year.

Let's take things step-by-step:

TV Ratings: 'Survivor,' 'Criminal Minds' rise, 'Idol,' 'Revolution' fall on Wednesday

'Modern Family' is Wednesday's best in key demo

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, May 7, 2014.

CBS' "Survivor: Cagayan," "Criminal Minds" and "CSI" all saw tiny gains on Wednesday night and, given the drops for most of the rest of the competition, that was enough to score comfortable wins both overall and among young viewers.

Among the shows in decline on Wednesday were FOX's "American Idol," NBC's full slate of dramas (particularly "Chicago PD") and ABC's "The Middle" and "Suburgatory." The CW's "Arrow" was down a hair in the demo, but flat in total viewers, while "The 100" was flat in the demo, but down in total viewers. And most of those numbers set or tied series lows.

On to the frequently ugly numbers...
