Ryan Gosling’s crooning and whistling backed an earlier preview for upcoming musical La La Land. Now it’s Emma Stone’s turn to sing in the teaser trailer released today.

Neither teaser has billed La La Land as all that upbeat of a musical. Both Gosling’s “City of Stars” and “Audition,” the song revealed in this new preview that Stone sings are rather melancholy.

“Here’s to the ones who dream, foolish as they may seem,” Stone sings. “Here’s to the hearts that ache. Here’s to the mess we make.”

Indeed, the film’s official summary promises a story that “explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.”

It’s set in modern-day Los Angeles but strongly channels a lot of 1950s and ’60s style.

La La Land is Gosling and Stone’s third film together. They also played romantic interests in Crazy, Stupid, Love. and Gangster Squad. They’re the closest thing we’ve got to a Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers pair today, and in this teaser trailer, their undeniable chemistry is on full display and we get another peek at a gorgeous Astaire/Rogers-inspired waltz floating through the Griffith Observatory planetarium.
