NEW YORK (AP) — Nicki Minaj sings about "Starships," but is she a star-maker? The singer-rapper could be joining the ranks of "American Idol" judges.

A person close to Minaj said the 29-year-old entertainer has been in talks to judge the Fox TV competition and that a deal is in the works. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because that person was not authorized to publicly discuss the matter.

If Minaj signs on, she would join Mariah Carey as a new judge on "Idol," which returns in January. Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez announced their exits from the show last month.

Minaj — known for her colorful hairstyles, wardrobe and antics — is best known for hits like "Super Bass" and "Starships."

Maybe next year they could get Guy Fieri and Gordan Ramsey to judge the singing competition. Maybe an Olympic shot-put thrower or a synchronized swimmer is available.

What a joke American Idol has become. Nicki Minaj? There wasn't a more qualified singer that wouldn't take $5-$10 million to judge others? So they pick a rapper 90% of America over the age of 25 have never heard of? She's pop star that has absolutely ZERO cred when it comes to singing.

Mariah? That was a good pick. Nobody questions Mariah's singing talent and she's been selling records for the better part of 2 decades. Call Michael Bolton, Brian McKnight, R. Kelly, or anyone actually known by the masses as a "singer".

At this point, just hire a producer or an A&R guy known for being a jerk to musicians (aka honest in the music business). Since Simon left, everyone is too scared to hurt someone's feelings. These people performing need to be taught this is the music biz and people, especially producers, are nasty.

Seriously, WTF? First we get Demi Lovato judging a talent competition when she's a 19 yr old only known for her addiction. Now we get Nicki Minaj, who has a song that consists of only the words, "Ur a stupid hoe" judging a singing competition? JFC. Just let Seacrest judge it, he already thinks he's better than the actual talent, why not let him prove it. He has been there the entire time as it is.

When Nicki's not trying be Rihanna, i.e. going pop, she's actually a talented rapper (just listen to how she kills it on Kanye's "Monster"; not too many people can totally outshine Rozay, Kanye, and Jay). But AI is a singing competition and SHE CANT SING or be a good judge of singing. I'm sure she draw ratings since I'm sure she'll speak her mind and be controversial but she doesn't belong. I think P. Diddy's a great choice. Bad Boy isn't what it used to be but at least he's experience evaluating talent.
