Sex, drugs and 15 great rock and roll movies

Tom Cruise isn't the only movie star who knows how to rock

Tom Cruise isn't the only movie star who knows how to rock. With "Rock of Ages" hitting screens this weekend -- and failing to strike a chord, if early box office is any indication -- we thought we'd take a look at some of the best (non-documentary) "rock and roll" films -- depicting everything from the early days of rock to the disco era to the present. Our definition is a bit loose, but then again, so is most good rock music. Let us know if you agree/disagree or if we missed any of your favorites.

Take out "Saturday Night Fever", and replace it with "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

La bamba over the buddy holly story? Seriously? La bamba is typical hackford schmaltz.

Take out Saturday Night Fever or call it "15 great movies about music". Anyone who was alive during that time knows that for all rock fans, 'Disco sucks'. Of course, we're more open minded about music nowadays. Still, I'd put in Hard Core Logo instead.

Bryan-a Exactly right, not sure they really understand what r&r is. Hell, Coal Miner's Daughter is more of a rock and roll movie than some of these.

ceggertsen Just because we didn't include one of your personal favorites doesn't make us clueless...the whole point of these lists is to start a conversation!

You forgot Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Tommy, Tenacious D and The Pick of Destiny and Repo: the Genetic Opera. You've neglected that a Rock Opera is the very definition of a Rock and Roll movie.

ceggertsen I love Hedwig! But we only had 15 slots. Compiling these lists isn't a science, remember...

i was waiting for "the commitments" also. "tenacious d" sucked. its funny how two jack black movies about music could be polar opposites, though i don't agree with it's no. 1 position it is a great movie.
