Just like the character she portrays, Evan Rachel Wood went through the ringer while filming "The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman."

Speaking with HitFix at the film's Sundance premiere on Monday evening, the young actress said that the bleak thriller was a challenge to shoot because of the intense emotions involved - and that a big part of her commitment to the role came from the energy put out by co-star Shia LaBeouf, who she described as "passionate," "dedicated" and "intense."

The plot of the film involves the efforts of a young man (LaBeouf) to woo the beautiful wife (Wood) of a brutal Hungarian crime boss - even at the cost of his life.

To see what else Wood had to say on the red carpet, check out the full interview above.

The Sundance Film Festival runs through January 27.
