Box Office: 'Jack Reacher' claims victory with no. 2 finish after 'The Hobbit'
'Rise of the Guardians' no. 3
Over Tom Cruise's long career he's earned a reputation of a summer blockbuster leading man, but most studio execs will tell you the truth is a December release date is his most reliable opening frame. "Rain Man," "Born on the Fourth of July," "A Few Good Men," "Jerry Maguire," "Vanilla Sky," "The Last Samurai," "Valkyrie" and last year's "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" are all Cruise hits that either opened right before or during the lucrative holiday season. In fact, Cruise's only box office disappointment among December releases is Paul Thomas Anderson's "Magnolia" which opened in limited release and expanded (badly) in January. Pre-release tracking caused quite a worry among Paramount Pictures executives that Cruise's latest thriller, "Jack Reacher," would not live up to his December standards. Oh, ye of little faith.
"Reacher" grossed $5.1 million on Friday for second place at the box office and could end up with $15-17 million over the three-day weekend. By Christmas, "Reacher" could be at $25 million. That would be a great domestic start for a movie that cost only $60 million. Right now, it appears as though it could perform similarly to the $88 million grossing "Valkyrie."
Still far and away the no. 1 film in theaters is Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." The adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic novel found another $10.1 million for an impressive $123.3 million in just 8 days. It's only competition over the holiday frame should be "Les Miserables" and "Django Unchained."
Third place went to Judd Apatow's "This is Forty" with $3.7 million. The R-rated comedy could gross $13-14.5 million over the three-day holiday. Considering the extended frame, there is no reason to think "Forty" can't recover from this weaker than hoped for start. It's definitely one to watch as the Christmas-New Year's moviegoing begins.
Filling the void for young families in fourth is DreamWorks Animation's "Rise of the Guardians" with another $1.5 million. After a slow start the holiday superhero team fantasy has pulled in $75.3 million. It may eke its way to $100 million sometime next month.
Seth Rogen and Barbara Streisand's "The Guilt Trip" took the fifth slot with $1.4 million. Since opening on Wednesday, the road trip comedy has found only $3.5 million. Paramount might have been better off holding this family bonding flick to Mother's Day weekend.

December 22, 2012 at 6:23PM EST Reply to CommentTom Cruise is not Jack Reacher. http://www.facebook.com/reacherfriends I know, I created the page.
KC Stick a sock in it. Tom Cruise IS Jack Reacher and awesome at playing Jack Reacher and it's written above in black and white. Jealous much?
December 23, 2012 at 3:13AM ESTWilliam2 I saw the movie tonight and loved it. Bullitt with Steve McQueen is one of my movies. This movie gave me a similar emotion. From the main title design to end credits it was intense and fun. The director of photography is one of the best (loved his work since the beach scene of Black Stallion). Shots are tight and the story moves by the juxposition of images-not only Child's masterful words. The director respects your intelligence. Rosamund rocks! I don't have a Facebook account (maybe never will) but don't think less of you if you do.
December 23, 2012 at 7:55AM ESTMarie I WILL see it again!! It was KICK- ASS!!

December 22, 2012 at 10:07PM EST Reply to CommentThe #2 slot is hardly a victory especially when the take is only $5 million and the #1 slot is occupied a film with twice that and its in its 2nd week of release.
Randy I have read pretty much all of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels and never once pictured that runt Tom Cruise as Reacher. Is this the best the casting director could come up with? Pathetic..........
December 22, 2012 at 10:37PM ESTClint When the #1 film is a monstrous fantasy extravaganza which cost over $400 million to make, and the #2 film is a rather low-key thriller which cost only $60 million, then yes, the #2 position IS a victory!
December 22, 2012 at 11:43PM ESTneverthehero the movie only probably got made because Tom Cruise wanted to make the movie. There are 17 novels, if a movie was going to get made before Cruise came along for the ride, then it would have gotten made already.
December 23, 2012 at 1:08AM ESTMarie @neverthehero...You Obviously haven't watched the videos on what Lee Childs had to say. HE PICKED .....TOM CRUISE. If you hate TC so much, why are you then so 'obsessed' with what he does?? I bet you are jealous!! I will see the film again and again. He aw awesome in it!!

December 29, 2012 at 10:16AM ESTYour comments are like a breath of fresh air. Thank you for sharing. In regards to jealousy, nah, I am sure you are not. I would not switch lives with the actor in question at any time. Wishing this man no ill will, only to help educate and help validate all those who feel they are going "nuts" when they see the words of plants and PR mechanisms working overtime, the force-feeding. WIsh it were as easy as looking away, but the bombardment and onslaught is everywhere. By the way, 60 million has been called into question as well (well, not questioned by those working in the industry). Whenever one of his films appears to be on the track of a soft opening, the budget will somehow "adjust" itself to a smaller figure, like a miracle (see IMDB's "estimated" budget). Anyway, thanks for the laugh and helping to ease the frustration.

December 22, 2012 at 11:52PM EST Reply to CommentI have read all of Lee Child's Reacher novels and thought the Jack Reacher movie was fantastic. Tom Cruise is not 6'5" but he did a great job as Jack Reacher. Many great lines and action sequences.
Sigma I felt the same way. I can't think of a single actor 6'5" 250lbs that I would've watched had they replaced Tom Cruise. Even my fav actor The Rock if he was cast in it, I wouldn't have taken it seriously. The movie required true great acting skill and Tom Cruise had the right amount of skill to pull it off.

December 29, 2012 at 10:09AM EST Reply to CommentSadly, however, the force-feeding on viewers continues.
After the audience and I who saw the trailer for Jack Reacher stopped laughing, I realized a few things. One: HE IS NO STEVE MCQUEEN. Then, I realized I had seen someone trying hard to sell their “star” as someone so tough, it would make Dirty Harry die of laughter–HE IS NO CLINT EASTWOOD. Then, I recalled another cringe-worthy piece of “reporting” from a few weeks ago, that he was planning on remaking The Magnificent Seven, with himself in the lead role, and realized–HE IS NO YUL BRYNNER.
But whatever his camp wishes to force-feed us, there are still plenty of cinema-goers who are not going to spend a dime on this “comedy.” BTW, another spin piece on him being the “highest paid” last year–is that salary or earnings (makes a difference considering others were paid higher salaries)?
Also, this controversy DID occur before, with Ann Rice, who felt “Huck Finn” was playing her character; that controversy was gone, after Ms. Rice was to receive a considerable monetary deal for the adaptation with Cruise.
Rock of Ages bombed. MI4 earned most of its money overseas, especially in places such as China, where most well-crafted US action films make a profit, regardless of its star.
And why, why–do we have to keep being bombarded with PR-placed “theories” as to whether or not audiences will choose to see his films or not because of what they feel about his personal life? Is it not possible that they choose to not see his films simply because they have little interest or have a distaste for the films themselves?
“Doing all his own stunts.” Please. The insurance and production would never allow it. And why not give the credit to his stunt people who are very hard-working, too (and more humble)?
Lessons learned: Question what you read now more than ever in this digital age, and don’t be afraid to laugh out loud in a movie theater.
Thirteenth Tom did a great job! Fun! We enjoyed it so much that we've seen it three times. Sad though, that the script included the gratitutious "F Bomb." Totally unneeded.
January 2, 2013 at 10:27AM ESTJoe Greg...dude get a life man....Tom has done a decent work...most people who have not read the book will agree...as for your hatred that comes out so aggressively...try some psychiatrist man...will pray to god for your mental recovery...
