Box Office: 'Expendables 2' remains the champ as 'Premium Rush' can't keep up
'The Dark Knight Rises' crosses th $420 million mark
"The Expendables 2" was the no. 1 move in America for the second weekend in a row, but Lionsgate and co-financier Millennium Films can't be thrilled with the results so far. The AARP action flick grossed another $13.5 million for $52.3 million in just 10 days. That's a good $10 million behind the first "Expendables" which had grossed $65.3 million at this point in 2010. As it's highly unlikely the sequel will be able to match the original's $103 million domestic gross, Millennium will have to hope to recoup the picture's reported $100 million budget overseas.
Holding on to second place is Universal Pictures' "The Bourne Legacy." Tony Gilroy's attempt to spin off a new renegade spy in the "Bourne" universe grossed another $9.3 million for $85.5 million to date. "Legacy" should easily cross the $100 million mark, but it's nowhere near the return of previous "Bourne" features at the box office. The last Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) installment, "The Bourne Ultimatum," ended up with $227 million domestic.
Right behind "Bourne" in third place is Focus Featurs and Laika studios' "ParaNorman." The critically acclaimed stop-motion animated feature grossed another $8.5 million for domestic cume of $28.2 million in just 8 days. It appears as though the potential best animated feature nominee will top out between $50-60 million at best. Laika's first endeavor, Oscar nominee "Coraline," grossed $75.2 million in 2009.
Fourth and fifth place found two successful Warner Bros. releases. Coming in with $7.4 million was Jay Roach's "The Campaign." The Will Ferrell comedy has $64.5 million in a little over two weeks. "The Dark Knight Rises" grossed another $7.15 million for a stellar $422.1 million so far. "Rises" is officially the second highest grossing film of the year after "The Avengers."
Right behind "Rises" was Disney's "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" which benefited from positive audience reaction dropping only 34% for $7.1 million over its second weekend. The fantasy drama has $27 million to date and could squeak to the $50 million mark if strong word of mouth continues to spread.
Among new releases, the Joseph Gordon Levitt thriller "Premium Rush" found just $6.3 million. Open Road's Dax Shepard and Bradley Cooper action comedy "Hit and Run" has made $5.8 million since debuting on Wednesday.
After a huge Friday where it landed in the third slot, "2016 Obama's America" had a dramatic fall on Saturday and Sunday landing in the seventh slot overall as it grossed just $6.2 million over the three-day. That figure is actually somewhat impressive considering the picture is still playing in just 1091 runs. For comparison's sake, "The Expendables 2" is in over 3,300 theaters.
New titles this week include "Lawless" and "Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure" on Wednesday and Lionsgate's "The Possession" on Friday.
Box office actuals are released on Monday.

Typos are understandable, but when the article is about movies and you misspell "movie", AND in the first sentence of the article, that's embarrassing.
Lowell I love douchebags like you who have a pathetic life and think they are perfect and feel need to critique spelling and grammar errors from articles online.....
August 26, 2012 at 2:52PM ESTAre you a copyrighted douchebag??
Hornacek Lowell, from one douchebag to another, thank you. It's good to know there are other douchebags out there. Dumbass.
August 26, 2012 at 2:54PM ESTAs to your so-called point, it's an article about movies - you think they would spell "movie" right.
Poop Clearly such an obvious typo as you noted it was must have been a mistake. It's not like they don't know how to spell movie. It's just that they accidentally missed an "i."
August 26, 2012 at 4:02PM ESTHornacek Yes, but to make a typo like that in the very first sentence is pretty embarrassing, especially when the article is about "movies".
August 26, 2012 at 4:44PM ESTDoc holiday nobody cares!
August 26, 2012 at 5:25PM ESTHornacek Companies care about the competence of their employees.
August 26, 2012 at 5:27PM ESTDoc holiday how dare he make a typo! fire him immediately!!
August 26, 2012 at 5:31PM ESTHornacek Maybe he shouldn't be writing articles if he isn't proofreading them beyond running Spell Check.
August 26, 2012 at 5:33PM ESTMunch Rambay Doc, you aree wrong. Dumb people don't care, everyone else does. I realize you never read REAL journalism but there but there used to be standards. Your pathetic family has bred down to you who have no standards. Don't blame anyone else.
August 26, 2012 at 6:47PM ESTmike3434 Munch Rambay. wait, wait, wait... did you just use the terms "are" and "but there but there," in a comment where you say "dumb people don't care about (typos), everyone else does. AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA , the irony is too much for me. Then you insult his family. I guess, by your "standards," your family has much more of a breeding problem. My god, that is embarrassing.
August 27, 2012 at 12:53AM ESTmike3434 lol "aree" is what you said. I made a typo on your typo and actually spelled the word correctly. Now that is funny.
August 27, 2012 at 12:57AM ESTThe moral of the story is.. Don't be a grammar nazi. It shows that you are a dick and that you are just begging for opportunities to look smarter than anyone. But if you absolutely cannot help it, you cannot and I mean cannot have several typos in your comment. ULTIMATE FAAAAAAI!
Hornacek Mike3434, there's nothing wrong with pointing out bad grammar or typos. Proper punctuation and spelling are a sign of a learned mind. Look at the generation bring raised on texting - now imagine the generation raised by them - they will barely be able to put two correctly spelled words together.
August 27, 2012 at 10:03AM ESTmike3434 Hornacek, have you never made a mistake? Does it make you a dumb person if you make a typo? No. I guess if you continuously make typos and it is clear that you can't spell, then maybe you need to be called out. "Look at the generation bring raised on texting." Is that what you really meant to say or did you make a typo? Maybe you shouldn't raise kids then? I'm just saying.
August 27, 2012 at 10:23AM ESTHornacek Mike3434 (which I'm sure is your actual name), it's apparent that you've never had a job before, so let me impart some wisdom unto you about having a job. You have to be competent - if you're a doctor you should know about medicine, if you're in the army you should be physically fit, and if you're a writer you should be able to spell and not make typos.
August 27, 2012 at 5:47PM ESTWhen you enter the workforce you'll learn that you can't make dumbass mistakes or there'll be consequences. Mistakes like writing an article about movies and misspelling "movie".
mike3434 When you are a grammar nazi, you must use proper grammar. I love how now you are turning it from a "generation" who will apparently raise a "generation barely able to put two words together," to simply criticizing the author of this story. I thought proper spelling and punctuation were a sign of a "learned mind." What is your excuse? You are a clown. I would have loved to have seen your face when you realize that you made a typo as you literally criticized everyone who makes typos.
August 27, 2012 at 10:33PM ESTAnother ULTIMATE FAIL!
Hornacek It took me awhile to make sense of your post. I reviewed my posts and I can't see what typos or improper grammar you're talking about. You're saying I made a grammar error and that's a typo. I don't think you know what a typo is - maybe you can save up some money and buy a dictionary. And how is bringing up another point a grammar error? Don't you know how conversation works?
August 27, 2012 at 10:48PM ESTOh, now I see. I had no idea I was communicating with a 5-year-old. I am sorry, I feel bad for making fun of a child. I apologize to you and your parents.
Also, calling someone a Nazi demeans everyone who suffered through WWII.
mike3434 Look harder dumb ass. I put it in quotes for you. You said "Look at the generation bring raised." Obviously you meant BEING raised. Now this would never be an issue if it were not for the fact that in that very same comment, you were berating everyone who makes typos. Do you not see the irony? If not, you are blind. You are a fucking moron. What you did is the equivalent to making fun of someone for being homosexual while having a penis in your mouth. Your insults are weak and totally random. The WWII comment is an extremely bad attempt to make me feel bad.
August 28, 2012 at 1:29AM ESTYou suck dude.
Now come back with some random insult about my parents or my age to make yourself feel better so I can once again point out to you, with facts, how much of an idoit you are.
mike3434 yep.. idoit
August 28, 2012 at 1:30AM ESTHornacek Mike3434, thank you for pointing out my typo. If my job was a writer and I made that typo and you pointed it out, I would be reprimanded. And you would be right for doing so. And ... you fell right into my trap - thanks for proving my initial point. Game, set, match (not very good at this, aren't you?).
August 28, 2012 at 12:23PM ESTAlthough, in my defense, in your "ULTIMATE FAIL" post I couldn't understand what you were talking about. You said there was a typo and then never said what that was - in the future when you make a claim you should then show your proof, otherwise people will think you're a rambling idiot. You should back up your claims so that they'll continue to listen to you and discover that you are indeed a rambling idiot but for completely different reasons.
Also, I was wondering how soon it would take for you to show you inability to engage in a proper debate. And you went for it hook, line and sinker. Calling someone a Nazi? Easiest way to show you are losing the argument. On behalf of everyone affected by Nazis, shame on you (and you *should* feel bad). Then you break out the homosexual comment. Wow, you hear about ignorant hateful people like this being on the internet, and you think it's just a rumor, but then you encounter one and think "what happened to this person when they were growing up to turn them into this big of a douchebag?" I hope your therapy improves.

August 26, 2012 at 5:35PM EST Reply to CommentYou people are hilarious. Here's what you write about "2016: Obama's America" --
"[it] had a dramatic fall on Saturday and Sunday landing in the seventh slot overall as it grossed just $6.2 million over the three-day."
A "dramatic fall" with "just" $6.2 million? In fact it showed a 400% gain. No other movie in the top 20 had a gain in audience AT ALL. The only reason it went from 3rd to 7th is because it's in one-third of the theaters of the bigger grossing and budgeted films, all with major stars and huge marketing support.
Moreover, its per screen average was the BEST of the top 25 films.
You concede that the "figure is actually somewhat impressive considering the picture is still playing in just 1091 runs." How open-minded of you. But it isn't "somewhat" impressive. For a documentary, it's incredible -- and you know it.
reni Actually, it's not that impressive for a political documentary. Fahrenheit 9/11 grossed $23,920,637 opening weekend and it openly played on 868 screens.
August 26, 2012 at 6:53PM ESTbuck They didn't say that it had a dramtic fall from the previous weekend they said that it had a dramatic fall from Friday to Saturday, which it did. All the tea partiers rushed out opening day and then the general audience never kicked in for Satuday and Sunday
August 26, 2012 at 8:01PM ESTHornacek They weren't commenting on how much it made overall - they were commenting on the drop from Friday to Saturday. Reports are the feedback from people that saw it Fri affected the sharp decrease in people that went to see it Sat and Sun.
August 26, 2012 at 8:06PM ESTJR The huge drop from Friday through the rest of the weekend also probably also has to do with the fact that tons of people were bussed in on the first day like they do with christian-themed films.
August 26, 2012 at 8:42PM ESTAs for the rest of your comment, why do conservatives have such a persecution complex nowadays? Not everything is part of some grand conspiracy by the "liberal media."
Sam Exactly what I was thinking, also no mention of what the Obama doc is about. Is it critical of his highness?
August 26, 2012 at 10:17PM ESTHornacek But most new movies either build from Fri to Sat or just drop slightly. But when a movie drops a huge amount, like this one, it's usually a sign of poor word of mouth. And considering that a lot of people who went to see it on Fri were probably bused-in Christians, that's not a good sign.
August 26, 2012 at 10:17PM ESTAnother recent example was Sacha Baron Conan's Bruno. It opened strongly on Fri, but poor word of mouth spread on Twitter and it dropped big-time on Sat and Sun.
Hornacek Sam, it is advertised as an anti-Obama documentary by Republicans. Throw "fair and balance" out the window.
