The Screen Actors Guild announced the 2014 SAG Awards nominees this morning and it was a big day for "12 Years A Slave," "August: Osage County," "Dallas Buyers Club" and "Lee Daniels' The Butler."
Steve McQueen's acclaimed drama was honored with four nominations including ensemble, lead actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor), supporting actor (Michael Fassbender) and supporting actress (Lupita Nyong'o). No other film earned more nods and only "Breaking Bad" tied it for show nominations overall.
The Weinstein Company's "August: Osage County" and "Lee Daniels' The Butler" each earned three nominations including both films landing in the ensemble category. "August's" Meryl Streep earned her 14th SAG nod for lead actor for "August" and co-star Julia Roberts earned just her second nomination for supporting actress. Both ladies are previous SAG Awards winners as is "The Butler's" Forest Whitaker who was nominated for lead actor. Oprah Winfrey earned her first Screen Actors Guild nomination in the supporting actress category.
The surprise of the morning was the three nominations for Focus Features' "Dallas Buyers Club." Matthew McConaughey was expected to land a lead actor honor, his first SAG nomination, as was co-star Jared Leto in the supporting actor class. Unexpected was the prestigious ensemble honor. The film's other ensemble nominees include Jennifer Garner, Denis O'Hare, Dallas Roberts and Steve Zahn.
"American Hustle" took home just two nods including ensemble and another SAG nomination for last year's lead actress winner Jennifer Lawrence. The "Catching Fire" star will go up against Nyong'o, Roberts, Winfrey and "Nebraska's" June Squibb for supporting actress.
Paul Greengrass' "Captain Phillips" brought Tom Hanks his sixth SAG nomination after winning lead actor for "Forrest Gump" and as part of the ensemble of "Apollo 13." Happily, Hanks' co-star Barkhad Abdi found recognition for his role as a Somali pirate. Abdi will go up against Fassbender, Leto, "Rush's" Daniel Bruhl and the late James Gandolfini for "Enough Said."

The 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards will be given out on Saturday, Jan. 18 beginning at 8 PM EST, 5 PM PST on TNT and TBS.
