For someone like J.J., steeped in Star Wars, surely that would be the ultimate thing - the chance to make a real mark on that world.
Loyalty to Trek can't be the only answer.
I guess it would just demand all his time and take him away from Bad Robot and the projects he has planned.
If he was offered it, it had to have been a tough decision made after some serious thought. *
