Foo Fighters - Wasting Light (Best Buy Exclusive)
Foo Fighters' latest single "Rope" debuted at the top of the rock chart, an almost unprecedented feat that has surely made Dave Grohl and the gang feel good about the album it trailed. Wasting Light is the Foos' seventh studio album and the first to feature Pat Smear since his return to the band as a touring guitarist. Smear last appeared on a Foo Fighters recording back in 1997, and long-term fans are sure to be delighted with his rejoining the band.
Another "return to roots" move that might make this album a little different from the Foo's more polished recent output is that it was recorded on purely analog equipment in Grohl's garage, and produced by Butch Vig (Nevermind, Siamese Dream, et al). Grohl's old Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic puts in a guest appearance playing bass and accordion (?) on "I Should Have Known." Bob Mould (Hüsker Dü, Sugar, etc.) adds vocals and guitar to "Dear Rosemary", and Lemmy (Mötörhead) appeared in the recent music video for "White Limo". Other guests include Fee Waybill of the Tubes and Rami Jaffee of the Wallflowers.
This Best Buy Exclusive edition of Wasting Light contains as yet unrevealed bonus tracks.
The album cover is reminiscent of that of Forever Changes by the seminal underground psychedelic rock band, Love. Where Forever changes had portraits of the band in a color illustration, Wasting Light has a similarly arranged photographic portraits overlaid in sickly tones — a wasting light, I suppose.
