'Jurassic Park 4' sets a 2014 release date but still has no director

Someone's got their work cut out for them

It has always been the goal of Universal and Amblin' to continue making "Jurassic Park" movies, and part of me wishes they would have greenlit the insane version that John Sayles and William Monahan wrote a few years back about a commando team of genetically-modified dinosaur/human hybrid creatures who were sent in to destroy South American drug cartels.

Alas, we have lost our opportunity to witness that particular strain of madness, and instead, there's another version that they've been developing, with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver scripting it.  That's one of those totally logical moves considering "Rise Of The Planet of The Apes" managed to salvage a property that Fox had been frustrated by for decades.

Universal seems confident that the latest draft of the script cracked whatever problems they've been having, because they just set a release date for the film of June 13, 2014.

Yeah, you read that right.  People are worried about whether or not "Star Wars" has enough time between now and the 2015 release date to get it right, and that seems like a tight turnaround for a big event film, especially one that will as micro-scrutinized as a new "Star Wars" film.  "Jurassic Park" is making the jump to 3D with this new chapter, and that sounds like a major technical challenge.  They've got to make the dinosaurs feel as fresh and amazing as they seemed to audiences in 1993, and that's not going to be easy.  It's not just a button you push at ILM.  It's going to really test a filmmaker, and according to today's reports, they don't have a filmmaker onboard already.

That would make me very nervous if I were the one greenlighting the film.  I'm guessing Universal has a pretty firm schedule in place if they're already putting the movie on the calendar, and certainly visual FX can be done on a much tighter timetable than used to be true.  But even if they hire a director next week, he's going to have to hit the ground running.

Even considering the visceral impact the first one had on a generation of film viewers, I don't think there's been a great "Jurassic Park" movie yet.  I think they all have some fun stuff in them, but they're fairly disposable on a script level.  This is one of those franchises where anything is possible on a narrative level, and that is encouraging.  It means that Silver and Jaffa weren't tied too closely to events that took place in the first three movies, and they can pretty much go anywhere in terms of story.  I hope they've come up with something very special, something that takes the potential that is inherent to "dinosaurs in the modern world" and spins it in some new and exciting way.

And the best part?  We don't have to wait long to find out.

I'll go see it no matter what the plot is. I can't get enough of dinosaurs. And people getting eaten by dinosaurs.

Does Spielberg have anything to do now? Perhaps a return?

Brendan I had the same initial thought. The only reason I would even consider it is the timing, with Robocolypse being delayed earlier in the week. The Beard is known for quick turn around on films he's been developing, so it would make sense from that standpoint, assuming the script excited him.

That said, it still seems like a major long shot...

Steve C Not sure The Beard would have any interest directing the 3rd sequel. But he knows how to deliver a movie fast so maybe the timetable is the result of Spielberg's interest in directing??

I'm part of the generation you referenced that was viscerally impacted by the original film. It's one of my all-time favs and is a "perfect" film in the sense that it accomplishes everything it sets out to do.

I'm really interested to see where they go with the series. As you said, they can really take it anywhere I just hope it's not back to the island....again.

Mark Well yes, it CAN go anywhere with the plot but should it really? Thy dino human hybrid script was crazy and fascinating but was it Jurassic Park? Unless someone attempts to build another theme park on the mainland, calling this Jurassic Park is kind of ridiculous. Maybe the plot centers on someone's desire to release dinosaurs into the wild or create a game preserve where they can be hunted. There was something primeval about that island. It was a time capsule of sorts where prehistory devoured modern science and technology and spat it out. How can you achieve the same mix of wonder, science, adventure and exotic locale without leaving dinosaurs in the jungle? I have no desire to see another Godzilla ripoff with them rampaging through a city.

Seeing the first JP when I was 10 years old is still one of my favorite memories at the movies.... I was the perfect age for it and it floored me. Obviously, I now recognize some of the script deficiencies. It almost makes me long for a time when I wasn't so discerning (almost)...

Hey Drew, I just read your review on the early JP4 script. I have to agree that as wacky as the idea was, at least it moved the franchise away from the token JP plot, of people being stuck on an island trying to escape being eaten. I think the early writers really should be commended for the amount of risks they took with the material. We can only hope that traces of that original script make it to the current draft, so we don't just get a rehash of what we've already seen three times.

The 2nd and 3rd films blew. I'm not dripping in confidence for the 4th.

briguyx Let's not blame Joe. He wanted to do a "Ten Little Indians" take where someone was murdering people in a hunting party and the dinos were blamed. That would have added some extra suspense to the story but it never happened...

One of the things I hate most about Hollywood is the "release-date-first" school of film production, it seems to pretty much almost always ends up a disappointment on some level...

I guess it's something that they at least appear to have a script they're happy with, which is more than can be said for some films but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth tbh.

Do we really need another Jurassic Park film? I don't know many people who were clamouring for another entry in this series. With that timetable, I can't imagine it will be a good film. But stranger things have happened.
