First 'Carrie' trailer suggests new remake may tap into the zeitgeist perfectly

Chloe Moretz is front and center in this first glimpse at the new version

I have certainly spent my fair share of time and column inches writing about the remake culture that we're suffering through right now, and by and large, I'm not a fan.  I think there is an anemic degree of imagination on display from the studios these days, and even the excuse that these things fund the chances that they take starts to look a little thin when the remakes outnumber the originals ten to one.

But I'm willing to admit that there are remakes that make sense, and when there's a piece of material that speaks to the times we live in or that offers an opportunity that a filmmaker feels strongly about, then I'm more than happy to watch what they come up with.  And in the case of "Carrie," I would argue that the time is absolutely right to revisit what remains one of the most potent of Stephen King's novels.

After all, it's not like bullying has stopped.  If anything, today's technological culture has created a whole new way for kids to be tormented and teased.  It's been hard reading the stories about Amanda Todd and looking at the video she left behind when she committed suicide recently and seeing how there are still people who were part of her world who continue to pile on the abuse even now that she's dead.  It's just one more disturbing story in a long line of them, and while some people seem to think this is new, I think it's just a new version of something that's been around as long as there have been weak and strong kids, as long as people have felt different, as long as there has been the need for some people to victimize others to make themselves feel better.

Carrie White is a great character, and Chloe Grace Moretz is a really strong choice to play the part.  I can't wait to see the dynamic between her and Julianne Moore as her mother.  Moretz is currently in the UK shooting her return engagement as Hit-Girl in "Kick-Ass 2," and it's interesting to see how well she can play both strength and weakness depending on the part.  There's a vulnerability to her that is underlined by the fact that she's still very young.  I really dig the Brian De Pama version of the film, but it's definitely a case of Hollywood casting actors in their mid to late 20s as teenagers.  Casting someone who is still in the midst of those adolescent pressures adds to the reality of the story, and Kimberly Peirce has expertly charted these waters before in the crushingly sad "Boys Don't Cry."  The combination of filmmaker and cast is promising, and at this point, I'm just curious to see how the script by Roberto Aguirre Sacasa tackles the material.

"Carrie" arrives in theaters March 15, 2013, and I sincerely wish we lived in a world where there was no point to the remake.

I just don't buy her stare at the end. Sissy looked genuinely deranged, and supernatural. Chloe looks like she's trying to scare her friends on Halloween.

    Call Carrie's house: (207) 404-2604. Pretty creepy.

Will they possibly be able to top the gym massacre at the end of DePalma's film? You're really rooting for her to just take those fuckers out by that time, and boy does she ever... It's the most beautiful nightmare of revenge ever put on film.

Oh, and fuck bullies of any kind.

As is evidenced by the trailer showing two distinct differences between this and the De Palma take, and as brought up by the director, this Carrie is more an adaptation of the source material than a direct remake of the classic film.

I definitely agree though that bullying is sadly still as strong as ever among teens. Even hazing on college campuses, where students are literally beaten and killed to join a clique, has been getting headlines lately.

    As much as we evolve.....

I guess my one solitary qualm with the argument that now is the perfect time for a Carrie remake is that bullying is a pretty universal concept and a new movie on bullying could be done that was not covering the same general story.

That said, this does not strike me as egregious. The topic is definitely a sensitive and timely one, with or without supernatural elements. I think Americans, and perhaps the world at large, are struggling with what constitutes bullying and what is just kids growing up. It is also nice to see actors appropriately aged for the roles they are playing. I would still greatly prefer new material rather than a remake of a Stephen King novel. Either way, there is a lot that can be updated with the basic bullying story with how much technology and the nature of kids and schools have changed over the generations.

I'm curious now, Drew, about your opinion on so much voice-over in a teaser trailer. I'm all for the "show, don't tell", and this trailer went the exact opposite route. Is that okay for even a teaser? Frankly, I think they might have teased us more if they showed us more glimpses and kept the exposition out of it. Especially when it's a retread of a really simple plot that people already know.

    Thoughts?

Might make a good double feature with "Let Me In". Two bully horror movies with Chloe.

Monty Jack Two bully horror REMAKES with Chloe... ;)

As much as I love the De Palma version (one of the great horror films of the 70s), there's reason to hope for the best with this one, with its excellent cast and a female director no doubt giving the material a different spin. Plus, no Michael Bay involvement!

After watching the trailer, I feel Chloe is horribly miscast. I understand and applaud that they found someone who is indeed a teenager. But sadly, Chloe isn't creepy at all. Sissy may have been in her 20's, but we got excellent creep factor out of her, and the original Carrie scared me shitless. I feel like in the theaters this spring, everyone is going to be like...hey its HitGirl with superpowers.!

There's a weird backlash out there against the casting of Chloe Moretz in this movie. She's "too pretty" for the role according to some people. Girls really can't win can they?

I totally understand about the zeitgeist phenomena and the creative (and sometimes not so creative) works that spill out from it. This great example of--just maybe--the right time and the right source material. But CARRIE is not alone in this respect, as anyone who has read Aaron Dries' recent horror novel, THE FALLEN BOYS can attest. Man, if there ever was a modern day zeitgeist novel, it's got to be that one (come on Hollywood, adapt this book already!!!!)

All that said, I'm super curious to see how this turns out.
