It looks like Godzilla's path of destruction en route to a start date for the Legendary Pictures update of the classic Toho monster has claimed two new victims, as producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee depart the project this week.

Both Lin and Lee are major production partners for Warner Bros, and I'm sure they're both plenty busy with other upcoming films.  Lin, for example, is a producer on the "Lego" movie that is in production now, he's part of the ongoing "Sherlock Holmes" series, and he's attached to remakes of Stephen King's "It" and the anime series "Death Note," both in development.  Most importantly, he's part of the team working to figure out "Justice League."  Lee is partnered with Lin on "Death Note" and "It," and he's currently busy with plenty other projects like the "Oldboy" remake, the "Poltergeist" update, a sequel to "The Woman In Black," and a brand new "Battle Royale."

Recently, there was an event on the studio lot where director Gareth Edwards put together a show-and-tell in one of the stages on the Warner lot to walk the studio through his vision of the film, and it went well enough that the studio now seems committed to a March start date for the film.

I recently was talking to someone who seemed confused about the idea that Warner Bros would want to make two giant-scale movies about giant monsters, but there's going to be a pretty major difference between what Edwards has in mind for "Godzilla" and what Guillermo Del Toro is doing for "Pacific Rim."  Guillermo's movie is all about world-building, designing an entire alternate history for our world and trying to imagine all the changes that would happen if we were faced with a decade-long war against creatures from some other world.  Edwards is trying to ground his take on "Godzilla" in a very recognizable present-day.  The world of that film is our world, and anyone who saw the Comic-Con presentation last summer can attest to the serious tone of the footage.

I'm just excited to see someone treat this iconic character with reverence in a new film.  I'm still wincing every time I think of the Devlin/Emmerich version, and I'm glad that they've taken their time getting this one ready.  I'm not sure why Lin and Lee were let go, but basically this is a case of the studio and Legendary finally having a clear idea of what film they're making and just being sure that everyone onboard the picture shares that same vision.

Right now, "Godzilla" is being thought of as a 2014 release.

Glad to hear production will start soon. They've had two of the larger sound stages up here in Vancouver booked since the end of summer and with no production underway they have been sitting empty and eating up money.

The common thought I've heard, which you alluded to in your article Drew, was WB is a bit nervous about releasing 'Pacific Rim' ahead of 'Godzilla' because some execs believe that if 'Pacific Rim' bombs, then 'Godzilla' would be a guaranteed bomb too; simply due to the somewhat similar concepts. Obviously both will be / are tent-poles for the studio so I suppose the nervousness is somewhat valid (especially by studio logic).

Thankfully, it looks like Edwards has broken past the studio's apprehensiveness and production can get, somewhat, underway. I suppose he'll be hearing casting confirmations soon?

I think it's time to treat Godzilla the respect it deserves. Choose someone who will give it the menacing atomic creature it is. It will have to be someone (or a team of someones!) who is an excellent action director, fond of sci-fi and thrillers, special effects, great eye for foreign locale, and one heck of a story (even though we all know the story!) Who is is? Who can he or she be? I'll wait.

Remakes: Death Note, It, Oldboy, Poltergeist, Battle Royale, and Godzilla.

Sequels: Sherlock Homes and Woman In Black

Hey, WB, C'mon. I have 15 original screenplays that I could offer you. Try something new for once.

FistOSalmon I was actually thinking while reading this that the loss of two producers that have nothing on their schedule but remakes and sequels is probably addition through subtraction.

I think "reimaginings" & "updates"& umpteenth sequels need to end.Rarely do they work. The Dark Knight is a rarity.Fresh ideas need only apply.

Please be good, Please be good, Please be good..

I own every Godzilla movie BUT the awful 1998 Emmerich which was a disgrace to the series.

Hope Legendary Pictures an Gareth Edwards cam restore my faith in a good proper take on a real American Godzilla.

Can't wait though, be there opening day.

Not to hijack your post or anything Drew, but have been thinking for some time that Gareth Edwards is the prime Star Wars directing candidate that almost no-one has mentioned. Monsters was as good as any audition piece for Star Wars as I've seen in recent memory (certainly more so than Safety Not Guaranteed). If Godzilla were to go belly up for some reason, would love to see his name come into contention - a more exciting choice than Favreau...

mmcb105 Its weird that an entire country decided to make a monster movie. Were there elections held for this decision?

I saw the Comic-Con panel and can attest to the seriousness of the footage, not to mention its bad-assed-ness, too :-) Gareth Edwards sounded like he had a firm grip on what he wants the picture to be. I cannot wait for 2014! :-)

Marc McKenzie Man, you're lucky--wished I could've seen it. I'm glad that Edwards wants to treat this with respect and seriousness. It also helps that 2014 will be Godzilla's 60th birthday....

I loved Monsters and will probably like Godzilla. That's my only takeaway from this article other than WB remakes EVERYTHING

Was the Comic Con footage ever released to the general public? I would love to see it.

Dezbot I have yet to see it anywhere. It was a shock when they showed it the first time, and when they said they were going to show it again, I tried to get my camera out to film it, but alas, it was a new camera I wasn't used to and all I could do was fumble with it. Someone got a still of Godzilla's head that you can find on Google, though.
