Well, imagine that.

Ever since they announced that the newest film in Fox's X-Men series would be called "Days Of Future Past," fans have been waiting to see how one of the most popular and enduring storylines from the comic would be adapted, and how it might unite the first three films in the series with "X-Men: First Class," and now Bryan Singer has revealed some casting news that is very exciting.

Earlier this morning, Singer posted the following to his Twitter account:

"I'd like to officially welcome back James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender & Nicholas Hoult to #XMEN for #DaysOfFuturePast"

Great.  Fassbender and Lawrence are on fire right now career-wise, so I'm glad they've worked out deals to make sure they play Magneto and Mystique again.  I think they were both vital parts of making "X-Men: First Class" work in the first place, and they are important parts of the story moving forward.

But it was his next Tweet that really got my attention:

"Thrilled to announce @ianmckellen118 and @SirPatStew are joining the cast of #XMEN #DaysOfFuturePast #magneto #professorX More to come…"

Holy cow.  I said before that I would pay $15 just to see Fassbender and McKellen side-by-side onscreen in matching Magneto helmets, and now it looks like that's actually a possibility.  What I love about this idea is that they can go all "Back To The Future Part II" here and start bending continuity, showing us things from a new angle, and having young and old versions of the same characters interacting is going to make this the strangest X-Men movie so far, but also the most exciting.

Now I'm curious to see who else he might be bringing in for the new film.  Any chance we might see a young Jean Grey show up?  And if so, does that mean he'd also bring back The Dutch Treat herself, Famke Janssen?  And considering how old Wolverine is said to be, and how he looked in his brief appearance in "X-Men: First Class," is it safe to assume that Hugh Jackman is, for the time being, the only Logan they'll ever need?

"X-Men: Days Of Future Past" is set to arrive in theaters in 2014.

Singer is basically going to have to write out most of the supporting cast from First Class, right? There's no way to have decent character development if a number of the old guard return, plus the teen cast (Banshee, Havok, Angel). The stuffed cast always seems to be an issue with this series.

kadoogan I would be surprised if they DIDN'T end it that way. With the time travel this is a way for them to both reboot the series and keep continuity. Just like Trek.

While I am thrilled, beyond thrilled, to see Fassbender and Mckellen chew up scenery together, I still don't understand why they don't make this into two films instead of just one?

There is far too much story to tell in just a two hour film. I think it would be better to make it two films and end the first one on a cliffhanger.

However, filmmaking is a business first so I suppose Fox wants to test the waters and see if a story of this nature will be accepted by the mainstream audience. Then, perhaps they play more with mixing the two universes in future installments.

I would also love to see them make a big, bold choice here and chose to end this film in a new universe, created by the actions and events of this film. You know have the world we leave at the end of this film be a completely new one, with characters in different places, with different fates, and new rules.

Why not go for broke here and take some risks? Although it is Fox and Brian Singer, so I think playing it safe, as much as you can with a story of this nature, is the rule here.

DKT I don't get it - why can't it be done in a single film? It was a two-issue comic book arc, IIRC. It won't be a straight-up adaptation obviously, but I don't think making a solid 2 to 2 1/2 hour film is an impossibility.

As long as they pretend that X-Men 3 never happened, I'm cool with it.

Am I still the only one who doesn't think Fassbender and McAvoy should be seen along side McKellen and Stewart? Their accents don't match, their acting styles don't match, and they certainly don't look like young and old versions of the same people. I enjoyed both versions of those characters, both portrayals, but they never, ever read as the same characters to me. I would never want to see them have to pretend to be each other.

And that's all continuity issues aside.

I hope Sir Ian doesn't start to weep and question why he became an actor while shooting special effects for this one too...

Hugh Jackman seems to really love playing Wolverine. I'd guess he'd want to appear in every X-Men project in at least a cameo role as long as it's an appropriate fit for the character and his body holds up. He gets into insane shape for these movies and at some point he won't be able to do it anymore but until then why wouldn't he?
