'Sons of Anarchy' recap: 'To Thine Own Self'
So much revenge, so little time
Jimmy Smits in full-on badass mode on "Sons of Anarchy"

I'm never really sure if the neverending cycle of revenge and retaliation on "Sons of Anarchy" is a legitimate thematic concern the show wants to explore, or just another example of its repetitive storytelling.
Assuming the goal is the former, "To Thine Own Self" is a strong -- at times even rich -- piece of work. Here's an episode that tackles the darkside of retaliation in two interesting ways only marginally related to the core cast, and one that gets to the very heart of the show's long term arc.
First, we're introduced to guest star Donal Logue as a mystery man who really, really hates Otto. Not only does this man promise to make Otto's life miserable, he also has his sights set on Tara. We don't know a lot about Logue's character just yet, but we can assume that he's somehow connected to Nurse Toric. Especially since Karina Logue, who played Toric, is Donal's real life sister. Maybe that's one of Kurt Sutter's little casting jokes (like giving Jimmy Smits' girlfriend Wanda de Jesus the role of Nero's "whore Friday" Carla), or maybe it's a bit of misdirection. But my guess is that Otto's nurse murder wasn't the end of the line he thought it would be. Instead, it cracked open a new doorway to hell.
Remember when Tig casually dismissed the murder of solitary guard Sergeant Macky's wife as "collateral damage" in the retaliation for Opie's death? Well, what can Jax say to a man who might be looking for the same kind of justice for Nurse Toric that Jax wanted for Opie? The guard's wife had nothing to do with Opie's death. Whether she likes it or not, Tara had something to do with Toric's death. Playing strictly by the rules of SAMCRO, Tara is as guilty as Otto, and I'm curious to see if Logue's character will be a vehicle to make that demented point.
On a purely visceral level, it was a thrill to see Smits' badass side come out. But Smits really proved his value when Nero finds out that Jax is just fine and no one in his crew was ever involved. Everything that Nero wanted to avoid by partnering with SAMCRO just blew up in his face. He goes completely numb, and Smits is entirely shattering in these scenes. (Given the show's poor track record with Emmys -- some of it egregiously unfair, some of it entirely warranted -- it may be a futile hope, but Smits seriously deserves some attention for his performance this season.)
Finally, we get a glimpse how far Jax will go to achieve his ultimate goal: the complete humiliation and destruction of Clay Morrow. Early in the episode, Tara begs Jax to leave Charming. She has a promising job offer. The RICO case is gone. He's ensured SAMCRO's future. She insists it's their "last chance." And we can tell from the look on Jax's face that he's not ready.
Maybe it's simply loyalty to the club. Maybe it's the buzz he gets from the seemingly weekly shootouts and car chases (this week's executed with a particularly acute sense of adrenaline rush by director Paris Barclay). But there's no question about his primary motivation: He hasn't got Clay yet.
Jax leans hard on both Gemma and Juice to get him the evidence he needs to turn the club completely against Clay, and they almost come through. Juice found Clay's secret stash of papers that would prove his connection to the Nomads, but the unfortunate timing of Jax's kidnapping just barely saved Clay's behind. Gemma was making progress too, but her obvious lingering feelings for Nero have surely tipped Clay off, even if wanted to believe her unconvincing attempts at playing the dutiful spouse.
When Jax discovers Clay is on to him, he explodes in a mixture of vengeful fury and childish temper tantrum. While it's easy enough to understand Jax's motivation (Clay killed his father, killed Piney and nearly got Tara killed), there's still something so deeply self-serving about his manipulation of everyone around him that anyone with their eyes wired to their brain is going to question Jax's suitability as a leader.
That anyone turns out to be Bobby, who heads straight to Clay's house to warn his old buddy that Jax is out of control.
Barring any last minute scheduling changes, we've only got two episodes left this season. If Harold Perrineau, Jimmy Smits and Donal Logue aren't coming back next season (and I have no idea whether or not they are), there are now three major storylines that need to be wrapped up. But, as always, the season is really coming down to Jax versus Clay.

November 21, 2012 at 4:06AM EST Reply to CommentGood episode, and I'm glad the remaining two this season are 90 minutes as well.
Still confused about the whole Cartel thing. I thought the Cartel wanted the Irish involved to get them, but maybe that was just the FBI. Still, you can't look at that whole thing too closely but I'm just glad it's seemingly over. Goodbye Danny Trejo. You sure looked like you belonged on this show.
Love the new threat with the guy that beat up Otto and it does seem like he must have some tie to the nurse that was killed. Really ominous that he is following Tara and that would be a wild end to the season to have her killed but at this point I think she's going to be around until the end of the series, even if she goes away for a while.
Don't quite get Bobby going off to warn Clay at the end, especially after hearing what Clay did to JT and Piney and almost to Tara. I get that Bobby is pissed at Jax for not telling him about Juice being the rat at the table and dealing with it by himself, at the same time no one seems all that mad when they find out that all these secrets have been kept.
For sure now it seems stupid that Jax needs "proof" because they all seem to back him and know Clay is rotten. And if he did need any proof wasn't Juice seeing the papers enough? Apparently SOA has evidentiary rules tougher than the state of California.
Jimmy Smits deserves an Emmy nomination for this episode. Just amazing that scene at the end where he is so broken up after he realizes he killed his guys for the wrong reason.
(forgot my password) Leo Bobby may have known about JT's murder (although I got the impression just Tig, Unser and Gemma knew), but he for sure didn't know that Clay just outright murdered Piney or was behind the plot to kill Tara. Unless Bobby doesn't believe Jax which seems unlikely, Clay seems like the last person Bobby would want to help out right now. You talk about wanting Juice to die for being a rat, Clay has now been exposed as that and much worse.
November 21, 2012 at 8:43AM ESTnate I think the only reason Bobby warns Clay is because he wants thing handled as a club, not just from pure rage. Chibs seemed PISSED!

November 21, 2012 at 9:46AM EST Reply to CommentIt was the best ep of the season so far. Donal Logue! I assume he is the nurse's brother. Not only a nod to their real-life relationship but, to me, a nod to a show 10 million times better than SOA in only one season, Terriers. I'm still fast forwarding through the dialogue scenes because they are just so poorly written. I am enjoying the Mamet-like plans Jax is making and Clay counterpointing him but the deus ex machina that allowed Clay to remove the documents was too much to take. I'm still wondering if Jax will throw Tig to Pope as promised because Tig is my favorite character and I love the way Kim Coates plays him, especially this season. Waiting for next week to see how KUrt, er, Bobby Houdini's Clay from another impossible escape.
HISLOCAL My first reaction was that he was wearing the scrubs to pass as someone who works there in order to get access to Otto (so obviously the guard was in on it too).

November 21, 2012 at 10:39AM EST Reply to CommentJimmy Smits stole the whole show, as far as I am concerned. He's been fabulous so far, but last night's back door scene was incredibly impactful. No words could have enhanced the range of emotions that twisted from his face.
Don't know if the mystery guy is tied to the nurse or not: "Donal Logue — who last appeared in the network’s series Terriers — will play a brilliant and dangerous U.S. Marshal named Lee Toric who is forced into retirement because of his history of violence. He’ll appear in the drama’s final three episodes before it wraps its current season on Dec. 4." source: insidetv.ew.com
HISLOCAL I'm gonna bet it's his sister, just because that's how they always seem to do it w/ the Logues.
November 26, 2012 at 5:38PM ESTAlso, that seems like a really spoilery tidbit - they give you his full name, occupation, personality, and exactly which episodes he's in, all in the space of 2 sentences.

November 21, 2012 at 11:38AM EST Reply to CommentLoved the episode, but I've honestly lost track of who want's what, most of the lies, and what the cartel's intentions are. Guess I need to go back and watch everything again.
ireneinidaho Same here!! There are so many convoluted plots -- both as in subplots and in people's plots against each other -- that I can't keep all the machinations and motivations straight. Also, I'm bored with the regular car chases/crashes and sick of weekly blood-soaked beatings. I guess I just need an outlaw show to keep me going between Breaking Bad and Justified, but this sure isn't up to their quality.
November 22, 2012 at 1:49AM ESTadamjmil I agree. Trejo's people are going after someone (forget who)...Jax basically swapped all the players in the deal, right? So can Trejo still go after who he wants to go after? And does it even matter with the RICO case dead?
November 23, 2012 at 12:11AM ESTThis is like the season with the Irish SOA and all the politics and the various motivations that were impossible to keep track of.

November 21, 2012 at 7:41PM EST Reply to CommentA theory about why Bobby turned to Clay at the end of last nights episode ...
Could it be that Bobby had something to do with the death of Jax's father? ... and that his turning to Clay is a way to keep Jax from finding out the truth of his involvement? Maybe Clay ordered Bobby to sabotage John Teller's bike?

November 21, 2012 at 8:38PM EST Reply to CommentAre Jax and Clay competing against each other at the highest level or what?
I'd like to say that its a game of chess and that right now Clay's winning, but with as dumb as Jax has acted the past few weeks its tough to think that he's smart enough to actually play chess.
So we'll compare it to a game of football. To start the game it was 14-0 Jax right off the bat. One would think that losing his ace would hurt Jax but he ran with and extended his lead.
Well whatever lead he had he's blown now and its anyones game. I don't know what's gonna happen to finish the show off. Well I take that back. I know Jax is going to get the last laugh because he's the main character but every day that Clay lives to take another breath is a victory for him.
Jax thinks hes got the cartel CIA guys in his hands but I'm not quite sure about that. Involving Lin was obviously smart, one of the rare intelligent thing the new President of SAMCRO has done but is it enough?
Anyhoo enough Jax and Clay. Who didn't see the implosion from Nero coming? How many of us would have a huge giant smile on our face if our sister/best friend shot herself in the head in front of our own eyes, our illegal business got raided by the Feds, and our new girlfriend/boyfriend was still being seen with someone who is still legally considered to be her spouse all because of some stupid MC club?
You had to see Nero's character reverting back to what he was a couple decades ago: A brutal, cold blooded gangster. Well, as he said himself, he's back now. The crew who he cut in on his escort business brutally learned about the reemergence of the old Nero. Will SAMCRO pay a similar price? Thats to be determined.
Juice, Juice, Juice. I think the whole sequence with what happened between Jax asking Juice to get the papers and the eventual failure of Juice to come through on the president's demands shows, in a nutshell, Juice's inability to deliver what the club has asked him to do of late. He simply hasn't been able to get the job done and he's bringing far more bad than good at this point. Whats Juice's fate? He's gotta go, but then again so do Clay, Tig, and arguably even Bobby. Can't have a club consisting of Jax, Chibbs, Happy and the fat guy. That won't work. Due to that major factor, I think someway, somehow, Juice will survive (unfortunately so because I think Juice is a dense, boring character and that Rossi is a horrific actor).
Is it just me or was the scene with Tara and Unser at the hospital overly disturbing? A troubled surgeon and a man who seems to be finally losing his battle to the deadliest disease out there sitting at a clinic and laughing at absolutely nothing after the latter spills his lunch from nausea? Seems like something out of a Rob Zombie movie . . .
Lastly, I am more than enthralled to find out just who that is that's deciding to find yet another level of torture for Otto to endure (if thats even humanly possible) in his waning days. The obvious guess has to be someone who was related to that nurse that Otto brutalized. That, however, would be too predictable now wouldn't it? I don't think we'll find out who that is until the very end of the season.
All in all "To Thine Own Self" was a masterpiece. The last half hour had me completely on the edge of my seat because it felt like there were multiple bombs about to explode and you didn't know which one was going to go off first. Fortunately for the sake of SOA fans like myself, all those same bombs are still ticking for at least 7 more days as the excitement continues to mount.

November 22, 2012 at 2:46AM EST Reply to CommentJax accomplished exactly what he set out to accomplish. He's got the club on the verge of getting out of running guns and drugs. So, as a leader of the club ... his character is following through with what the younger Jax saw as the right thing. And, he pulled off the exit so smoothly that it even surprised Romeo and the CIA. ... The hunch is that the tell-all where he explained the Clay killed his dad wasn't a surprise to Tig or Bobby, maybe not even to Chibs. Why on earth, the same day Jax got them out of guns and drugs as Bobby wished, would Bobby tell him he didn't have "proof" to go after Clay when Jax KNOWS Clay killed J.T. and Piney and tried to have Tara killed? At that point, Jax should've been golden and those guys should've followed him on any move to take Clay out, right? But ... Bobby balked and warned Clay. So, Bobby must be an accomplice because he had no reason to block Jax at that moment. ... Tig's a crazy man and he's mad that Clay had him go after Opie on a lie and accidentally kill Opie's wife. He's also pissed that Clay lied about being shot by blacks, thus prompting Tig to go kill Pope's daughter. The twisted character Tig has become has to be factored in. He could've helped Clay kill J.T. and still hate Clay. ...
Don't we suspect that Tig knows Jax kept him alive or is keeping him alive? Tig has to know that Pope will kill him or wants him dead.
If the old guard was all in on J.T.'s death ... it undermines the whole show. We find reasons to like or pull for them but if they killed the co-founder or were complicit ... c'mon!
Donal Logue was dressed like a prisoner when he showed up to batter Otto. The guard let him in. He's going to torture Otto until he tracks down Tara and does whatever he plans on doing there. And, he said he felt like he'd been given some sort of new meaning to his life's calling or something, right?
It seems, though, like Logue's character won't just try to kill Tara without making sure she brought in the crucifix ... unless he's another guy impossibly connected to SAMCRO who inexplicably knows the whole story.
I watch the show for entertainment, still ... Gemma's facing getting info from Clay by feigning love for him or losing access to her grandchildren. She slept with the guy to get close and get info. But ... I'm supposed to believe she risked blowing her cover, getting the hell beat out of her again by Clay and more talking none to quietly to Nero and then topping it off with a big kiss when Clay was loose in house? That could've gotten Nero killed, Gemma a beating and who knows what else. And, it would've probably been more effective in Nero's state if he had to just hear, "I love you" whispered and the door closed.
Bill Love ur guys comments...im still frustrated over the proof thing.every single one of us knew once jax told juice to put the papers back that somehow clay was gonna figure it out and hide them again..First of all if they belive franky when he said he gave clay back his paperwork then why dont they believe what he said about clay setting everything up? this whole plot wit proof is ludicrous..jax even said the reason he didnt kill clay was because of the cartel needed the irish and the irish would only deal wit clay..So if that deal cuts out the irish guns for chinese guns.now he can kill clay.right? Wrong now he wants proof...i mean what is the gang of 5 members gonna do to jax if he kills clay ....clay killed piney and admitteed it tig killed opies wife im sure thats against the rules and juice killed miles and jax knows and he is still breathing..thank u guys for letting me vent
November 22, 2012 at 3:49AM ESTBill Sutters great at creating characters but he Sucks at staying true to them...just because he needs to keep a story going...clay knows jax wants him dead he killed piney and tried to kill tara to keep jax from finding out about j.t. So in keeping wit clays character why wouldnt he kill jax...he lost gemma so he has nothing to lose..he could kill jax and blame all the people who has been shooting at him every episode.. and tig who is a stone blooded killer would only have one goal and that is to kill pope..its almost like he forgot about his daughter being burned alive...i know there gonna eventually kill pope but come on ..how dumb can juice be?? He is a rat there is not one gang that wiill keep him patched in even if he gives up clay...but if they kill juice and clay that leaves a president a .v.p. Tig chibs happy and the guy who looks like a nerdy shrek . a gang of 6...what a joke...

November 22, 2012 at 11:08AM ESTTHIS.
The "proof" thing is crazy illogical based not only on the facts themselves (he has had enough "proof" since the start) but it's also illogical based on what we know about the characters and their temperament and nature.
I know Sutter feels Clay is needed and he is a great character, but Sutter's gone to such frustrating lengths to justify his staying around and it's taken away from the credibility and believability of the show itself and it makes it hard to try to logically predict what might happen next.
(forgot my password) Leo "Why on earth, the same day Jax got them out of guns and drugs as Bobby wished, would Bobby tell him he didn't have "proof" to go after Clay when Jax KNOWS Clay killed J.T. and Piney and tried to have Tara killed? November 22, 2012 at 11:17AM ESTTSILL, I think that they're trying to say that Bobby ran off to Clay because as Nate pointed out way above, he's worried Jax has gone too rogue and has put killing Clay priority above all else. WHICH IS SO STUPID, because as has been pointed out Clay's pretty much responsible for most of the bad stuff that has happened to them since the very start.
Plus, it's especially annoying to me that Bobby is the one running off to Clay because it's Bobby that benefitted most from all of Jax's actions that ultimately save Bobby from the murder rap which goes right back into effect if Otto testifies. AND BOBBY SHOULD KNOW THIS.
So very frustrating, if that's what Bobby is doing.

November 24, 2012 at 9:31PM EST Reply to CommentHaving finally gotten to watch the episode and read all y'all's comments, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that I think that Bobby's got something up his sleeve - he's not flipping on Jax to protect Clay. The look on his face when he walked into Clay and Gemma's kitchen did not suggest to me that he was there to rat on Jax to Clay.
Bobby is one of the most interesting and powerful characters on SoA - and, along with Chibs, the character Sutter's remained truest to - but we often forget it. He's the institutional memory, often the conscience, and frequently the voice of reason of the MC. I see him as a sort of "wise elder" (wiser than Clay, anyhow). But he can be just as ruthless as any of the others, even though he's not a psycho like Happy or a maniac like Tig.
I think Bobby knew nothing about Clay's hit on Tara or the real reason why he killed Piney until Jax told him, and he is appropriately disgusted with Clay. I doubt that he has any interest at this point in siding with Clay over Jax; he probably now sees Clay as as much of a lost cause as Gemma does. But Bobby's not a hothead like Tig or Chibs; he thinks things through. He's not necessarily smarter than Clay, but he is more methodical, more removed, and he is less corrupted by power. If he believes Clay is beyond saving, and is now a threat to the MC, he could be exploiting his close relationship with Clay to help Jax take him down. Not exactly sure how he might do it, but that's what i think he's up to in his late-night visit to Casa Morrow.

November 27, 2012 at 11:56AM EST Reply to CommentI believe I'm giving up on this show, it just keeps recycling the same crap over and over again.
Clay and Jax, Tara and Jax's family getting targeted. I can get past the poor acting, the absurd gun shootouts in broad daylight weekly, the asinine car chases to some poorly written music. But there's simply no story anymore. This clay/Jax rivalry story is done, it's so done no one cares about it anymore. Clay or Jax needs to lose and go away from the show.
And why does Jax not once try to get the CIA to get Pope? A couple drug and gun deals which Pope basically attends himself and Pope is away for life, Jax and the club are off and everyone has their revenge. Instead he's going to bind up the Chinese gang he has a good relationship with? Makes no sense, but nothing in
