'Sons of Anarchy' recap: 'Darthy'
Someone needs to give Jax a time-out

I'm kinda glad there's only one more episode of "Sons of Anarchy" left this season because I need a break. Not a break from the show, necessarily, but definitely a break from Jax Teller.
I've had enough of his smug self-serving schemes, spoiled child-like tantrums, and stubborn refusal to do anything about the constant threat that hangs over the head of everyone he supposedly loves as long as he remains in SAMCRO.
There's no need to like or sympathize with characters to find them interesting. Almost all quality cable dramas are built around anti-heroes who often behave in reprehensible ways. But no matter what vile acts Vic Mackey, Tony Soprano, Walter White, et al. may commit, they're never less than compelling figures at the center of dynamic, nuanced shows. That's not the case with "Sons," and I think more than anything else that's what holds the show back from joining the ranks of TV's best dramas.
In this episode alone, Jax gave Clay a beating after a unanimous vote to kick him out of the club (but spare his life, thanks to Bobby's single "no" vote on that issue), watched helplessly as the "cartel" instigated a gunfight with the IRA, continued to reassure Damon Pope he'd turn over Tig, flipped out that his ex Wendy was spending time with their son Abel, continued to browbeat his mother, accepted Nero's escape plan money to pay Wendy's ransom after she was kidnapped by the IRA and practically strangled Wendy to death while threatening her life if she didn't back off and leave his family alone.
That I didn't sympathize with any of his actions isn't the problem. The problem is I just don't care any more who Jax is angry at or why he feels so wronged or what sort of violent act he's engaging in to protect the sanctity of his club or his family or whatever else he feels allegiance to at that particular time and place. The whims of Jax Teller are nearly as exhausting as the writers' ongoing efforts to make them semi-believable.
After five seasons it's become nothing but a sad joke that Jax won't do anything to change his life. During his heart-to-hear with Nero, Jax is shocked that Nero is willing to part with his money so easily. What will happen to his retirement plans? Turns out Nero could've bailed on pimp life long ago, but a zebra can't change his stripes and all that...
"Now it's too late," Jax concludes. "But you knew that was gonna happen."
"You can't stay in the uniform and not play the game," Nero answers.
It's a sad development for Nero but one that holds significant potential for the show (if Nero survives next week's finale). Jimmy Smits has been excellent all season long, and there's every reason to believe he can sell the hell out of playing a soulful badass -- someone caught up in circumstances that he loves and hates in equal measure.
Charlie Hunnam has proven plenty capable of selling that same conflict in the past, but we've seen too much of what Jax is willing to put up with to buy into the dilemma anymore. Jax doesn't want to leave, period. He needs to man up and just say it.
Maybe that was part of what motivated his loathsome attack on Wendy. After the IRA told her what happened to Abel (isn't she lucky she didn't have to sit through Season 3 like the rest of us?), she understandably unloaded on Jax and Tara for staying in Charming and standing by SAMCRO after a baby was kidnapped, carted off to freakin' Ireland and nearly killed several times over. Seriously, what does it take?
Deep down, Jax may understand she has a point. But, as usual, he blames everybody but himself.
Odds and ends:
- We got our confirmation that Donal Logue's character is the brother of the late Nurse Toric. His name is Lee Toric, he's a retired U.S. Marshal, and he makes it clear to Tara that he's going to avenge his sister's death. Line of the night: "You can hold on to that card. It's obsolete. I'm still looking for a new job."
- Clay's current escape plan: Hitch a ride with the IRA back to Belfast, and he wants Gemma to come with him. She tells him she'll "think about it" but the last thing we see her do is make out with Nero. Has she already told Jax where Clay is heading? Will she?
- Jax asks Unser to find out everything he can about Toric, which sounds like the beginning of an incredible spinoff about a hilariously mismatched pair of retired law enforcement officers.
- Hey, remember when Sheriff Roosevelt was on this show? Just checking.

November 28, 2012 at 4:34AM EST Reply to Comment"(isn't she lucky she didn't have to sit through Season 3 like the rest of us?)"
This made me laugh. So true. Lucky girl.
I'm still not all that unsympathetic towards Jax (though that Wendy scene at the end pushed me there) and I still think he's redeemable and at least in theory, he is trying to act to benefit the club. For me at least, there's a big difference between him and Clay.
I absolutely stand by my prediction that Jax is setting up Pope and will just pretend to turn Tig over. As bad as Tig has been in the past, he always thought he was serving the MC (and Clay) and there’s just no way Jax would hand him over to Pope. If Jax felt Tig should die, he would kill him himself instead of turning him over to this guy – handing him over would be out of character for him and against everything this club is supposed to stand for. (Plus I think Tig knows that Jax is out to get Pope or else he would have acted a little upset about Jax getting so close to the guy that burned his daughter to death.)
I feel even more strongly about this after Jax had that smirk on his face after Pope turned around (during their meeting.) It’s the same smirk he had last week, and the same one he had when he met with Stahl in S. 3 the day she made him sign the agreement to “turn rat”.
I think it’s a big coincidence that both Pope’s insurance policy and the debt to Nero are the same amount, minus around 5 grand or so. Don't know if that means anything.
So who thinks that something may happen to that charter plane back to Ireland? Jax has to take care of Galen and since it’s a charter (filled with only TV bad guys and not a commercial airline) then that would sure take care of the problem. That would make Clay go away too although I’m not so sure that’s a satisfying way for him to exit and downing a plane may be too dark for even Sutter.
Oh, meant to add, love the federal marshall/nurse’s brother dude. What a great character. And what is going on with that gun Juice took? Guess we’ll find out next week. Also want to know what Jax said to Juice and Gemma and what plots they hatched….
Zelda I agree that there's a good likelihood that you're right about that smirk on Jax's face re: handing Tig over. It's been the biggest "will he or won't he" in my mind this season, because the answer will give us the information we need to know about whether Jax is, in fact, redeemable. No matter which option Jax chooses, however, I think that if Tig hops the charter to Belfast it's going to cause a serious problem between Pope and Jax.
November 28, 2012 at 4:53AM ESTBut what I remember Pope saying was that his insurance policy was $5million, not half a mil. Still a tidy chunk of change, and I'm sure we weren't fed that piece of information for nothing, so it's bound to come into play sooner or later.
And yeah, ex-Marshall Toric is without a doubt the most promising new character on SoA in quite some time. What really struck me about him is the fact that, temperamentally, he seems like he belongs in an MC rather than on the opposing team. Could get very interesting!
(forgot my password) Leo Oh that's right, thanks Z, it was for 5 million.
November 28, 2012 at 5:05AM ESTIf Jax isn't plotting revenge against Pope (with Tig knowing) then I do take back what I said about his being redeemable. I am really hoping that next week's episode will explain a lot of what he's been thinking and plotting all along and that this will have us willing to still root for him. (Wendy notwithstanding.)
Just looked up the meaning of the finale next week. The episode is called J’ai Obtenu Cette, which translates to "I've got this", which is what Opie said before he died. (It was used another time but I've forgotten at the moment.) Love the title and for me at least, sort of reenforces what I think's going to happen. I guess we'll see.
Zelda There's no doubt in my mind that Jax has an endgame where Pope is concerned, and that it involves something utterly brutal and probably quite psychologically twisted.
November 28, 2012 at 5:15AM ESTThe question that remains in my mind is whether or not Jax is willing to sacrifice Tig in his revenge game. Opie's death was a game changer for sure, and the degree to which Jax will betray his other MC brothers to avenge his best friend will be the truest test of his character yet.
nolookpass432 "I've got this" has been used a couple of times. First was Opie when "the scene that shall not be referred to" happened. Then Jax said it to the guys as he beat the guards head in. Chibs said it right before he shot T.O.'s (Grim Bastards President) cousin. Possibly another time, but those are the ones that I know for sure.
November 28, 2012 at 11:27AM EST(forgot my password) Leo Thanks, it was the time Jax said it in reference to killing the guard that I was trying to remember. I'm not sure what the phrase is intended to mean but just know Bad Stuff happens afterwards.
November 28, 2012 at 2:53PM ESTAUSpur Agree on the Pope stuff. Jax's brief conversation with Pope's Lieutenant at Charming Heights lend credence to that as well.
November 28, 2012 at 3:16PM ESTJeannie For @Auspur: the thought crossed my mind that Jax was assessing how close Pope's Lieutenant was with Pope. I believe it was since he was a teenager, which Jax observed was very loyal and "very patient" of him. Perhaps Jax will kill this guy as a "message" to Pope.
November 28, 2012 at 11:08PM ESTOlive-oyl For @Jeannie - I took the "...and very patient" comment as perhaps Jac perceives his loyalty as a means to get to an end. I believe Jax may view him as a viable and pragmatic successor for Pope, one that he could work with after he inevitably avenges Opie and Tig's daughter's death...

November 28, 2012 at 4:38AM EST Reply to CommentHere's where I see this going: Tig, repulsed by Jax's attack on Wendy, suddenly discovers he has a conscience, and decides to bail on the club and sail into the Irish sunset with Clay.
Which makes it look to Damon Pope as though Jax has reneged on their deal.
Which sets up the showdown we all know is coming between Pope and the MC (or, more specifically, Pope vs. Jax).
This is going to get seriously ugly.
Not expecting Bobby to survive into Season 6.
Michael Dowling "Tig, repulsed by Jax's attack on Wendy"
November 29, 2012 at 2:48PM ESTThink of all Tig has done, do you really think it's possible for Tig to be repulsed by what Jax did?
Zelda I was surprised, too, but in the scene where Tig meets Jax outside of Wendy's apartment, he seemed hesitant to give Jax the hypodermic, and asked if he was sure he wanted to go through with it.
November 29, 2012 at 3:40PM ESTIt might be an inconvenient time for Tig to decide he has a soul after all, but one of my main criticisms of this season has been the way Tig's character has not perceptibly changed or evolved since the traumatic experience of witnessing Dawn's murder - still cracking jokes, still a twisted horn dog, still an MC man, through and through.
My hypothesis is that Sutter might be playing catch-up with Tig in these last couple episodes.

November 28, 2012 at 5:01AM EST Reply to CommentI'm thinking Jax will use the advice Pope gave him this episode to kill Pope in the next. Other than the obvious of Juice getting clipped, there better not be anymore cast hitting the dirt next episode. I'm not tuning in next season for the filthy Phil show. Seriously, Miles was so much more of a interesting character, why are we stuck with this fat buffoon? Also, I too have lost all sympathy for jax, for 4 season we were lead to believe he was the smart one, but he sure acts like a unthinking spoiled child at that gavel. His duplicity doesn't make for good drama like Clay's did, it's just become loathsome and annoying.
Weez I would totally watch a show of just Phil eating cereal.

And I must say, I could just about hear the Vader theme music in the background while Nero was pacing in the Diosa kitchen.
Not that Nero is Darth Vader - that's all Clay (or Jax...?).
fragments makes sense to me. Nero the wise Obi Wan, Clay being Anakin Darthy Skywalker....and Jax's (luke skywalker) soul on the line as he walks toward the darkness....

November 28, 2012 at 2:18PM EST Reply to CommentWhat a fun hour (+) of television to watch. I'm out of the conjecture business as it relates to this show, so trying to figure out what's going to happen or who's going to die (and for what reasons) is a futile exercise.
The Cartel interrupting the Sons meeting with the IRA was exactly the kind of soap opera worthy trashiness Sutter aspires to. Our anti-hero with a heart of gold gives a stirring "Hey, man, my bad" speech to the Irish and has everything worked out when the cartel busts in and has a gunfight (with Jax recording the only kill? Did I see that right?), and that gunfight ends when a guy busts through another door and has a louder, scarier machine gun (he shoots it in the air!) stopping all the other guns immediately! Classic. But, it did set up the Irish revenge angle, leading to kidnapping Wendy so we could see Jax ruin her life again when he'd already worked out with Tara how Wendy has no proof and couldn't really hurt them in any legitimate way. I really is a testament to how Sutter and his crew make this show that they can show stuff like this and make it at all compelling. But dammit if it ain't!
Everybody is redeemable on this show. They've rehabbed Wendy, the 9 mos pregnant mother shooting heroin and made her look sane (and hot again). Clay is suddenly sympathetic, even to Gemma, after he beat the piss out of her last season and has killed innocents (Donna, Piney, redshirts galore) to remain in power. Watching him cry, I was actually sorry for him. Nothing short of amazing, considering I thought the show was done after deciding not to knock him off last season. Jax isn't beyond redemption, either. But, who knows how they'll play it.
Also, while it shouldn't continue to do so, Danny Trejo's shortness elicits an involuntary "Damn, he's short!" comment from me every time they show a long shot of him.
Donal Logue is killing it. So tortured/wounded and obviously mentally unstable. Really fun to have him skirting the margins.
Yeah, Roosevelt. No doubt he'll be a part of the finale somehow (I hope). Maybe he and Hank Dalworth/Lee Toric can square off. Great chemistry from those two on TERRIERS.
Keep the faith, Geoff. This show as a second-tier piece of entertainment is gold. Sort of like a less subtle SPARTACUS. Another show I can't wait to have reemerge.
Anybody else notice how well this was shot, technically, I mean? SoA has raised their game. Some really pretty looking scenes this week/season.
Apologies for the length.
(forgot my password) Leo I agree with everything you say here, and btw that was a hilarious and accurate recap of the cartel/IRA/SOA gunfight.
November 28, 2012 at 2:46PM ESTI loved how the scene with Clay getting his tattoos covered up was filmed, music and all. That was some fine directing.
I third this comment! And I second Leo's comment about Clay!
November 28, 2012 at 2:56PM ESTrcade Don't apologize for bringing so much awesome in a single comment. You made me happier than Walton Goggans with breasts.
November 28, 2012 at 10:19PM ESTGeoffBerkshire Timm, I think the problem I keep running into is that "Sons" really *wants* to be a great show, and every once in awhile it is. As simple well-executed entertainment, it works fine. But no matter what Kurt Sutter says they're clearly aiming for more.
November 29, 2012 at 5:29AM ESTIf there were more episodes like the Walton Goggins installment, then I'd be satisfied saying the goal is a fun ride. But I have hard time not taking the show seriously when it takes itself so seriously. That inevitably leads to frustration.
Anyway, I definitely appreciate your take and the take of many commenters here. Even if I don't always love the show, I'm always impressed with the passion it inspires.
Timm S Yeah, Geoff, I see what you're saying, and I'm tempted to hold them to standards they're just never going to reach. There's what they say they are, what they think they are, and my expectations formed from what I actually see. Now, granted, sometimes I can be fooled into thinking it's a good-good show (and we've all been there with this thing, like the S3 finale), and then it does what only Sons can do and mix the absurd and sublime in equal measures. As I stated at the beginning of the season, in order for me to really enjoy watching this show, I'm going to keep the bar low, no matter how much they might sometimes clear it by. And as a result, my experience is more enjoyable.
November 29, 2012 at 11:15AM ESTStill, I get where you're coming from, and I know you're right. We see it every year when Sutter goes on his cunt-barrage during Emmy nomination time. Again, what they think it is isn't necessarily what it really is. I played ball with plenty of guys who didn't understand why they aren't playing pro somewhere. (NOTE: Best analogy I had. Not intended to be a humblebrag or a straight one. I'm 40 with sore knees and play My Little Pony with my daughters now.)
Thanks for the response, Geoff. You're good at what you do, and I enjoy reading your take on this fun little show.
Timm S And thanks for the comments, guys. And @RCADE, I've been very amused and not a little confused since Venus VanDamme came into my life a few weeks back. There MIGHT be some explaining to do if my browser history sees the light of day. "But honey, it's Shane Boyd Vendrell Crowder!!!" I'll let you know how that goes.

November 28, 2012 at 2:36PM EST Reply to CommentIt's pretty obvious what will happen to Pope. Jax is going to take Tig to Pope but Jax will kill Pope instead using Clay's gun (that he gets from Juice). So he kills Pope and then all of Pope's guys will be gunning for Clay in hopes of getting the $5 million. Jax will give Pope's right hand man, can't remember his name, inside info on where Clay will be.
Only thing that is unknown is if they get to Clay before he leaves for Belfast or if that is a storyline they drag out to the last season.
(forgot my password) Leo That's a good theory about Pope's death. You figure that Pope's second in command will come into play after that little discussion Jax had with him in this episode.
November 28, 2012 at 2:51PM ESTI figured that Juice was going to take the gun (per Jax's instructions) and somehow Clay was either going to be framed by it or himself die from it, but Juice seemed reluctant to take the gun and it was only when Clay insisted he take it that he did. That sort of made me wonder about whether Juice planned to take it.
rcade If Clay kills Pope, how does that not blow back on the Sons even though he lost his patch? He's still closely associated with them.
November 28, 2012 at 5:32PM ESTJax's plan for revenge on Pope has to be bigger than just killing him and framing somebody else. I think another deus ex machina is in the works like the drug cartel turning out to be the CIA.
TSill Clay gave Juice his gun, but Jax doesn't know Juice has the weapon. In TV time, we're in the afternoon or evening before the 4 p.m. take-off time for Galen's chartered jet outside of Mendocino. So, how does Jax find out Juice has Clay's gun ... then get the slightly dimwitted Juice to find and kill Pope ... and make a clean getaway, leaving Clay's gun behind? That doesn't even take into account the time Jax then needs to get to Pope's guy to say, "Hey! That's Clay Morrow's gun." (I'm terrible at predicting what happens, so your theory might unfold and I'll realize THEN that it makes sense.)

November 28, 2012 at 5:43PM EST Reply to CommentIf Kurt Sutter isn't trying to match best shows then why is he so hard failing to turn Jax into Tony Sopranos type character. November 29, 2012 at 1:04AM EST Reply to CommentOk, other than a plot device to create more drama, why exactly did the cartel bust up the deal with the IRA? Jax was great there - "EVERYBODY WANTS THE SAME THING HERE" and they still screw it up....metaphor for several parts of the show perhaps?

I had no problem with what Jax did to Wendy, she continually threatens Jax with his son. Jax just bailed her out to the tune of 500K, she lived the life and needs to just stop coming in every 9 episodes, threaten to take their son, get beat up, then go away. It's enough with the same story line but that can be said for this entire TV show.

Clay = Vader
Jax = Luke
Clay is Jax's real father, Bobby knows this and it's why he went behind Jax to cut a deal with Clay and stop Jax from killing Clay. That's my guess at least.
Michael Dowling I don't think so, it's why Clay keeps calling Jax "Son". Gemma and Clay were an item long before Jax was born, it's obvious at this point.

November 29, 2012 at 5:09PM EST Reply to CommentThis season has been all over the place. I just don’t know what I’m even supposed to be routing for anymore. The violence this season has escalated so high it’s lost its purpose. Every episode people are beaten and killed. Jax has killed several people this year yet there seems to be no repercussions. I remember back in Season 1 or 2 when killing someone was a big decision the characters at least gave some thought to if it was worth doing or not.
I laughed out loud in this episode when Jax took Tara in his arms and said, “I am going to give you a great (or wonderful) life.” SHE’S A SURGEON!!!! Given how they live (small house w/ hand me down furniture) she’s got to have a ton of money socked away. I’ve always struggled with this on this show. I think they should have made Tara a nurse instead. It would be more believable that they needed to do this b/c it’s all Jax knows or they need a ton of money to leave. But, that’s a separate issue.
Aside from that, the club is dwindling to nothing. Clay is out. Tig is dead. I don’t think Juice is off the hook. Pretty soon it’s just going to be Jax, Bobby, Chibs, Happy, and the fat guy!
