'Glee' recap: 'Glee, Actually'
'Glee's' third attempt at a Christmas episode is not quite a charm
Cory Monteith, Jenna Ushkowitz and Kevin McHale on "Glee"

Holiday episodes should be a cinch for "Glee." It's the perfect time of year to get all sentimental and romantic and musical.
But "Glee" never needs an excuse to celebrate great songs, the bonds of friendship and family, and warm and fuzzy feelings, and maybe that's why the show has paradoxically never produced a great Christmas episode. How do you make something seem special when it's what you do all the time?
"Glee, Actually" represents the third stab at a Christmas episode following Season 2's "A Very Glee Christmas" (with the sweet revelation that Brittany still believes in Santa and the infamous Sue Sylvester as the Grinch parody) and Season 3's "Extraordinary Merry Christmas" (which had some clever moments lost amidst an overall mess of an episode).
"Actually" is a definite improvement on "Extraordinary," if not quite a match for "Very." But I liked the idea and wish someone had thought of it back when the show was still working, and the characters were still worth caring about.
Since the episode was divided into five non-overlapping segments, it didn't feel so much like its supposed inspiration, "Love, Actually," than it did like a collection of short stories from the "Glee" universe. And that approach oddly made for one of "Glee's" more cohesive and consistent hours in quite some time.
Artie's "It's a Wonderful Life"-style dream sequence imagining what would've happened if the glee club never existed was the most fun the show has had since the whole cast swapped characters when Tina knocked herself out in "Props." I never thought we'd see Jessalyn Gilsig again, but there she was, nailing her cameo and clutching a fake baby as Terri Schuester. And Damian McGinty's return as Rory was an even more welcome sight -- he's an actor and singer with greater natural charm than anyone "Glee" has added to the show since.
It's too bad that director Adam Shankman couldn't figure out a way to give Kevin McHale's "Feliz Navidad" solo at least half the creativity and energy of Artie's unforgettable "Safety Dance" from Season 1, but at least we got to see McHale perform *something* on his own for the first time this season. And let's just skip over the fact that this sequence totally ignored Santana ever existed (was Naya Rivera busy this week?) and totally went *there* with Quinn (you know if the writers knew Dianna Agron was never coming back they'd love to kill Quinn off for real, just to put a period on an endlessly tortured character arc).
Meanwhile, in New York, Rachel made a brief appearance in a ridiculous outfit to say a few lines and then disappear for the rest of the hour. (Remember when Rachel and Finn were the stars of "Glee," and some fans complained about how much screen time they had even though Lea Michele and Cory Monteith were never less than completely reliable and interesting to watch?)
The real focus in New York was on Kurt and his relationships with Burt and Blaine. This is the second time Mike O'Malley has appeared this season, and the second time the show has used him to try to manufacture the sort of tear-jerking emotion that used to flow naturally from Kurt and Burt's touching father-son bond.
Burt has cancer now! Sad! But he invited Blaine to see Kurt in New York! Sweet!
The only reason the silly storyline works at all is because O'Malley, Chris Colfer and Darren Criss play it completely real. Even in its best days, "Glee" often relied on talented actors to overcome sloppy writing, and this segment stayed true to that spirit. Colfer was especially good at silently conveying Kurt's mixed emotions at seeing Blaine again, and the conflicted feelings Kurt still has about their relationship. Colfer and Criss' "White Christmas" duet was a'ight, I guess, but there was nothing in the episode that came anywhere close to Rachel's "O Holy Night" in last week's not-Christmas episode.
What else?
Oh yeah, Sam and Brittany got married. In the episode's goofiest thread, the dim-witted "soulmates" decided to make the most of the few days they had left before the inevitable 2012 apocalypse and got hitched (by Coach Bieste!). Sadly, it turned out to be a ruse. No apocalypse. No wedding.
I have to admit, I was disappointed. Since "Glee" insists on forcing these two together -- and I can't complain about any screen time for Chord Overstreet and/or Heather Morris -- why not just go totally cuckoo in classic "Glee" style and get them involved in some kind of "What Happens in Vegas" rom-com mix-up where they get married first and fall in love later? At least it would give them a believable excuse to spend time together.
Also, there was another terrible subplot for Sue (I'm really losing patience waiting for the announcement that Jane Lynch is ditching this sinking ship for good) and believable enough bonding between the Puckerman half-brothers, which ended with the promise we'll be seeing more of Mark Salling in the future. (Yay? I guess? I've always liked Salling, and the show has generally done right by Puck, even when he's involved in stupid things like sleeping with Shelby, but is he really the character most in need of extra screen time at this point?)
We also met Aisha Tyler as Jake's mom and saw more of Puck's mom (Gina Hecht) than in her previous two appearances ("Mash-Up" and "Goodbye") combined. Both actresses were perfectly fine. Maybe we'll see them again. Maybe they'll vanish. You never know with "Glee."
But I do know this: This is my last "Glee" recap for HitFix. If you've been following along with me this season, I appreciate it and I feel your pain. I didn't want to take on the task of writing about "Glee" on a weekly basis just to complain about how terrible it is. The Internet has enough of that. But I had no idea what was in store for me this season. I've lost my connection with the show, and I need to reclaim the recapping time for other endeavors. I'm thrilled I had this opportunity, and I'm sure HitFix will have someone great to pick it up in 2013.
Assuming the world doesn't end next week.

December 14, 2012 at 7:23AM EST Reply to CommentSpot on as usual Geoff. You always articulate what I am feeling and now will be when I bow out. Lea Michele and cory monteith are the stars and the reason I watched from the pilot. In this Christmas episode they were nowhere. The hurt kurt strand has been so overdone and aren't Finn and kurt family now, evidently not a close one. The show needs to be put out of its misery.

December 14, 2012 at 7:54AM EST Reply to CommentSay it isn't so Geoff. You have articulated the reasons why Glee has gone of the rails so eloquently. I have tried to understand the logic behind this mess, but sadly there is none. I think Rachel is going to do Spring Awakening that is how bad this show is becoming. There are simply too many people on this show with the only thing that matters is what the next itune song is going to be. This Nayda garbage is starting to feel like the wizard of oz and every character must follow the yellow brick road to get there. Kirk apparently wants his dad to stick around in order to see him become a star not you know because its your my dad. The pr machine has been put in hyper drive to setup Rachel berry and as the next funny girl to the point where the best actor on glee is deliberately written to not want to perform anymore. Glee has become the worst returning show on network television. Fear not viewers because even more stunt casting is coming to save the day, look it is Jessica Sanchez idol singer not an actor and Bette Middler is going to get her 15 minutes of fame. Wow this show has really done it. Santana will get some sort of reason to stay in new york come the back half and finn will forever be never going to be in new york. I am glad that I wasted three years on this show that i will never get back. Good luck on the next show you write about.

December 14, 2012 at 10:10AM EST Reply to CommentHeather looked amazing last night love her looks, It's to bad she always has to be in her cheer uniform when she has scenes with Santana, Heather has done a outstanding job on acting this season, but the Br*m stuff is not good at all Sam just bring Brittany down were Santana always believed in her and encouraged her to grow. Brittany needs to focus on graduating they need to give her someone like Tina or sugar to bounce off of. u love when brittany gets snarky and Heather plays that part great just hate her with Sam. Love the fact Heather is not mute this year too.

December 14, 2012 at 12:46PM EST Reply to CommentGeoff NO!! Please keep recapping Glee. You know the show, mid-season all the changes come into play and I hope they will somehow make it interesting again. Please hold on a little longer haha. I will miss your reviews though.
Geoff no!!!

December 14, 2012 at 12:52PM EST Reply to CommentToo bad the FOX executives don't take your reviews to heart and save the show. And, thank you!...for pointing out Rachel's ridiculous outfit!!!!
Miss you
December 14, 2012 at 12:54PM EST Reply to CommentThe fact that this show is trying to make us care for the new characters like Marley and just ignores characters like Finn for an entire episode ( he gets to sway in the back like a prop singing background vocals) is just plain ridiculous. The show has some major fixing to do. I will miss your review Mr. Berkshire! Honestly.
jess This was my problem too, as Geoff pointed out. when they separated their 3 best actors the "stars", and had them DO NOTHING in the Christmas episode, right before a long hiatus are they stupid? The fact that there was this big reveal of Burt's cancer and, you know, HIS FAMILY wasn't involved at all. Finn and Rachel were mere props? and Glee can't figure out why thier ratings are tanking? seriously, acconrding to the numbers they lost 700,000 viewers during the last episode. that's a lot of people turning the channel halfway through.

December 14, 2012 at 12:55PM EST Reply to CommentRachel just looks so disgusting this season. All black short shorts and knee high hooker boots in the middle of winter in NY? She's become insufferable. I would like to see more of Finn and Santana making their way to NY.
What Disgusting give me a break. Take off the boot and she is bascaillywaringthe same thing short skirt/short and a top. And she has done nothing that is insufferable.

December 14, 2012 at 1:02PM EST Reply to CommentAbsolutely agree with you on the fact that one of the reasons all of this is failing is because they stopped focusing on the main characters (they are main characters for a reason). Rachel just disappeared (in her season 4 "sad clown hooker" costume) . And what about Finn? Did he spend Christmas alone? It's his favorite holiday. His mom is visiting her sister, his stepfather has cancer and instead of taking him to NY to visit his brother to deal with this dreadful news in the family Burt decides to take Blaine (the boy who CHEATED on his son) with him? The star he bought for Rachel last Christmas (best scene of the episode) is never brought back up again?
Jaimie Totally agree with this.Glee really has lost it's way. you've said it all. Finn and Rachel used to hold this show together even if they weren't together, now I can't stand much of Rachel's storyline and Finn's just often doesn't make sense. and separating it's best actors? bad idea.

December 15, 2012 at 12:21PM ESTSteven Collier I assumed the writers might at least throw the Glee faithful a bone... maybe Rachel gazing at the star named "Finn Hudson"
December 18, 2012 at 8:57AM ESTfrom the deck of the cruise ship as the final scene? Lea Michele and Cory Monteith are/were the reason to watch Glee from the pilot episode... Is Ryan Murphy trying to create an avenue for the two to leave Glee permanently to further their careers? Seems so...

December 14, 2012 at 1:34PM EST Reply to CommentI don't usually comment on reviews but I understand the sentiment regarding the lack of connection to Glee. I loved this show because of Finn and Rachel, and I don't even mean 'together'. Both Lea and Cory bring skills that some of the other cast don't have. Rachel has very little screentime and a poor storyline (seriously, Brody?), whilst Cory is stuck with the newbies who I have absolutely no interest in.
Anyhow, I originally wanted to say, Good Luck and Thanks for the reviews!

December 14, 2012 at 1:59PM EST Reply to CommentI have never cared to write to a reviewer to stay! Geoff I have loved your spot on analysis. I need to quit. This show but just live Finn too much!! Kiera storyline is now insufferable to me. In the pilot Finn and Rachel were the leads but where are they in this ep? Horrifying. Good luck mr berkshitre

We'll Miss YOU!!!!!
December 15, 2012 at 10:55PM EST Reply to CommentI love Chris Colfer and his acting but even I am getting desensitized to Kurt's pain. It's all he ever gets. This show is sliding downhill faster than an avalanche. I really think Ryan loves his other two shows and could care less about this one.
It Kurt is now unwatchable for me. Somewhere in season 3 they decided he was the lead but it is not my view. To centre on kurt at Christmas was insane. To have such a poorly written episode without your true stars. Also insane. Kill burt, make poor ittle kurty suffer. I just don't have any investment. After watching avidly all these years and going to glee live I will be one of many who won't be back in jan.

December 18, 2012 at 4:43PM EST Reply to CommentIf they don't ever add new characters to glee then the show will only concentrate on the seniors that graduated. Because the current glee club members could not have competed with out more people. So then they really have nothing to do all year.

December 23, 2012 at 5:29PM EST Reply to CommentGeoff, I'm totally saddened to see this :( your reviews have always offered a great analysis of each episode and I have always looked forward to them. It's a shame that you've given up but I understand. Glee has become pointless without the old cast. The writers have made a mockery and a mess of every decent story and character. The ratings have plummeted and I'm not shocked. I'm relieved. Because maybe this means it'll get cancelled. The only reason I watch it is for the old cast, they're amazing and so talented.
I love, LOVE Brittany and Sam but I am just not feeling their romantic progression. It was too sudden and her relationship with Santana wasn't given proper closure. Three seasons of build up was written off and tossed aside in one episode (with the lesbian comment, which FYI I loved Brittana and I am straight) I think they ruined a great opportunity for a Sam/Brittany friendship or even a slow burning romance where they find solace in each other after heartbreak (not that you would know Sam was in love with Mercedes a mere few episodes ago).
I don't like Rachel/Brody (I prefer Finn which is saying a lot as I never really liked him that much, Rachel was always destined for stardom and I felt Finn sometimes held her back) because Rachel needs time to shine and be the star that she deserves to be and if she finds her way back to Finn along the way? Great for those Finchel fans but I want her to find her true self beforehand (same for Finn, he needs to be self reliant).
What about Burt's heart? Could they not have actually had continuity this once and used that as his illness rather than this rushed cancer story line?
Enough from me, as I could rant for days but I'll miss your great reviews and I wish you all the best.
Jim
