While two-thirds of this year's Best Picture Oscar nominees grossed over $100 million, there are still those who think blockbuster cinema is shortchanged by the Academy -- franchise films, in particular, struggle to get much respect beyond the technical categories, however well-executed. We can argue back and forth about the rights and wrongs of that, but for more populist-minded viewers, the Jameson Empire Awards should come as a relief.

Voted for by readers of UK film magazine Empire, the awards take place in London on March 24, and are a loose, funny and -- as you'd expect from a whisky-sponsored event -- cheerfully irreverent antidote to the pomp and ceremony of awards season. Mainstream hits tend to dominate the event, and such is the case with this year's nominations: British smash "Skyfall" leads the way with six mentions, followed by top US grosser "The Avengers" and "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" with five apiece.

The only Best Picture nominee Empire readers and Academy voters agree on, meanwhile, is Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained"; "The Dark Knight Rises," which pointed received no Oscar nominations at all, rounds out the top category.

Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis and Christoph Waltz both make the Best Actor lineup. The same goes for Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway in Best Actress, though Empire and Oscar disagree over what the ladies' best performances of 2012 were: they're nominated here for "The Hunger Games" and "The Dark Knight Rises," respectively. Best Picture winner "Argo," by the way, rates just a single nomination, in the Best Thriller category.

Kudos to Empire readers, though, for also noticing such less prominent titles as "Moonrise Kingdom," "Sightseers" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild," and for handing a nomination each to "Anna Karenina" breakouts Alicia Vikander and Domnhall Gleeson. Voting for the winners opens today, and runs until March 15 -- you can do so here.

And still nobody nominates Cloud Atlas...

Tom Cloud Atlas was only just released in the UK last week, so it wasn't eligible for these awards.

I was always a bit bummed that nobody mentioned The Avengers for anything major. A SAG Ensemble nod would've been pretty worthy for it.

I really don't understand all the ire over The Avengers not being nominated for more awards. I love Joss Whedon, and thought as a first chapter, his Avengers was peppy and fun, but lacked any of his personality. There were a few standout scenes (Johansson's interrogation at the start and her later fake-out with Hiddleston), but it felt more like a competent first chapter than anything else.

I do, however, agree that Hathaway was better in Dark Knight Rises than in Les Mis.

JJ1 Love what you said about The Avengers.

It WAS peppy, fun, well-crafted ... but it also lacked personality. I lacked that 'something' - for me - which makes a movie an A and not a B.

      Love these nominations, overall.

Well, they're right about Jennifer Lawrence. And some would agree about Hathaway as well.

Love the Daniel Day-Lewis love, even here.

jupiter rising Paul, I am a fan of the Hunger Game book series, but I felt Jennifer Lawrence was bland and too old for the Katniss Everdeen role.

Now, Anne Hathaway easily owned the TDKR, and she deserved all the great reviews for that knockout performance. Hathaway had a great year with Les Miserables and TDKR- that is why she won her Oscar.

I don't know, there's kinda a big difference between nominating Avatar, Toy Story 3, and Return of the King, and nominating Lincoln and Django Unchained.

Blockbusters are being shortchanged as of late and this year's slate doesn't look likely to cross over. If The Blind Side can manage a BP nomination, there's no reason Avengers, Hunger Games, or TDKR should be excluded.

Andrej But The Blind Side appealed to a far older audience compared to the other three movies you mention. Avatar, Toy Story 3 and ROTK, were long-lasting projects that had immense success creatively and financially, which made their BP nod undeniable.

    M.

I loved Jennifer Lawrence in both The Hunger Games and Silver Linings Playbook (I agree with the praise earned for both films) I am glad that The Hunger Games and Lawrence's performance in the film were recognized. Now, let's get the Oscars to recognize genre films!.
