Sundance has been dominating my attention this week so it's been rather fortunate that there is a definitive lull in this year's Oscar proceedings. Perhaps that's one good thing to come of the Academy's new schedule. It gives those of us covering the fest some room to breathe before diving back into all that.
So then I missed "Saturday Night Live" this weekend, which featured "Silver Linings Playbook" star Jennifer Lawrence as guest host the very weekend her stiffest competition for the Best Actress Oscar, Jessica Chastain, was ruling the box office roost. And for her opening monologue, the writers set her up with some fun joshing toward her fellow nominees.
My favorite barb had to be the one she threw Quvenzhané Wallis's way. "The alphabet called. They want their letters back." It was a cute little segment and everyone -- well, except Emmanuelle Riva, oddly -- got a nice bit of sincere appreciation from Lawrence throughout. Check out the clip below. We'll be back on Oscar's watch soon.

Cringe-worthy
Roy Munson You must not have watched it recently. It was better than most b/c it wasn't a silly song/dance

January 22, 2013 at 9:38AM EST Reply to CommentSNL hasn't been good in many moons...Jennifer Lawrence was game, though. I like Lawrence, very good actress and she seems likeable. I thought a couple of the sketches were funny. I really believe the reaction some have to her appearance is way over the top...in fact, I'd go so far as to suggest that the reaction is manufactured.
Aaron McMahon Watch last season's finale with Mick Jagger as the host and musical guest. The combination of him and it being Kristin Wiig's final show probably made it the best SNL episode in history.

January 22, 2013 at 12:03PM EST Reply to CommentI like Jennifer Lawrence. I didnt love SLP, but I think shes very talented. She seems like a cool girl. And I think she'd be great fun to hang out with.
But while I understand the humor in the monologue, I thought it didn't come across too well; and her awkward reading of the dialogue didn't help, either.

On a (slightly) less pedantic note, no In Contention podcast this last Friday? Or is it just arriving late because of Sundance duties?
Kristopher Tapley Skipping a week. Announced on Twitter.

January 22, 2013 at 3:32PM EST Reply to CommentIt was definitely not the show's shining episode in a strong season. Top Dog Chef was one of the worse things I've ever seen on SNL. Wow, just awful. And her friendly joshing wasn't as fun as Salma Hayek's "Renee Zellweger has a penis" smear back in 03.
