The Academy has announced its shortlist of seven Best Makeup and Hairstyling contenders. The films will proceed to the "bake-off" stage, where reels of the work put into the makeup and hairstyling effects will be screened for the branch and three nominees will be chosen, revealed alongside the rest of the Oscar nominations on January 10.
The immediate exclusion of note is "Cloud Atlas," which transformed a number of movie stars across a variety of eras, ages and even races. Some of the work was quite wonderful, but much of it was a bone of contention for some, and clearly, that bore itself out in the narrowing process for the branch.
Also absent is "Holy Motors," which isn't a shock, one supposes. Who knows if the membership even bothered to watch the film. Because you'd think, if they had, they would have seen that it's far and away the best representation of their contribution to the form this year. Alas, it wasn't meant to be, and with "Who Were We?" failing to make the finalist cut for Best Original Song, the film's Oscar hopes in general have likely been dashed.
Another film that unfortunately (in my opinion) missed was "The Impossible." The work on wounds and whatnot was very well accomplished, but like with the Best Visual Effects shortlist, the film got the shaft.
The other two we were predicting for a nomination, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" and "Lincoln," both made the list and seem like likely nominees. I'd say the third is a toss-up between "Hitchcock" and "Les Misérables," though I wouldn't count out "Men in Black 3" and the great Rick Baker. "Snow White and the Huntsman," too for that matter. Hell, any of these could get nominated and I wouldn't be surprised.
The full list:
"Hitchcock"
"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey"
"Les Misérables"
"Lincoln"
"Looper"
"Men in Black 3"
"Snow White and the Huntsman"

And even though Cloud Atlas had some bum make-up, so too did it have amazing make-up. Seems like it was J. Edgar'ed (amazing plus poor equals no nom).

December 15, 2012 at 6:35PM EST Reply to CommentThis is a fucking joke. I'm honestly not sure I've ever seen such impressive and, above all, expansive makeup work in a single film than I did in "Cloud Atlas."
And, uh, no "Anna Karenina?" The same people that nominated "The Duchess" here three years ago? Wha?
Disappointing to say the very, very, very least.
JLPatt Wow - "The Young Victoria" I mean. Just shows you how those films blend together in the memory.
December 15, 2012 at 6:37PM ESTWTF? Please put down the crack pipe. Or is it that you are married/ related to someone on the makeup crew? If there was an academy award for best 3 year old doing makeup, I could still find a better candidate to smear peanut butter on a lens or throw a dirty diaper on an actor and call it makeup.

December 15, 2012 at 6:37PM EST Reply to CommentHow pointless. The amazingly-integrated, transformative makeup of Cloud Atlas ignored in favor of the usual bunch of fantasy and sci-fi picks, which aren't bad per se, but are so much less impressive. And Les Miz? I haven't seen it yet, but what work in that is supposed to be on par with what we saw in Cloud Atlas? Some grey hairs on Hugh Jackman?

December 16, 2012 at 3:47AM EST Reply to CommentI think The Hobbit and Men in Black are in (or at least they should be). The third spot goes to Lincoln or Hitchcock.
I thought all the work here was outstanding, except for Looper - which for some reason just didn't work for me.
Also, isn't it about time this category goes the way of VFX and expands to 5 nominees? There's too much good work going unnoticed with just three.

December 16, 2012 at 4:54AM EST Reply to CommentYeah, most branch members can't possibly have watched Holy Motors -- I struggle to believe any artist of the craft could think Les Mis and Hitchcock are stronger makeup showcases.
Paul Outlaw I haven't seen Holy Motors yet, but I'm thinking Les Miz gets in for the entire Fantine degradation sequence, the Thénardiers stuff, and the many faces of Jean Valjean. The Hitchcock inclusion is a bit of a head scratcher, all things considered.

December 16, 2012 at 3:32PM EST Reply to CommentCLOUD ATLAS' makeup was outright laughable at times, as ambitious as it was. You can't reward with a nomination work that so takes you out of the film. And, saying there was a lot of good work to compensate is like having a film like STAR WARS or CLOSE ENCOUNTERS get nominated if they also had paper plate flying saucer scenes like those in PLAN 9 and say, "yeah, but the Millennium Falcoln and the Mothership were so cool".
Zak I would agree but I struggle to come up with a good make up for Atlas, it all look like shizz to me.
December 16, 2012 at 4:22PM ESTMe 100% dead on. The makeup on Cloud Atlas is horrible. Anyone with a working knowledge of cinematic history who thinks this was even a passable job should just go back to watching Nickelodeon and MTV. Lon Chaney and John Chambers are rolling over in their graves.
