The Academy has announced that a whopping 75 tunes are in play for the Best Original Song Oscar this year, and among them were tracks by Adele, Florence + the Machine and The Arcade Fire. I imagine that makes the Oscarcast's producers very happy, that top ticket acts are in play, but they have to be nominated first, folks. So don't go carving out a spot in the show's rundown for these numbers just yet.
Also in play are other popular artists like Keith Urban, Karen O and Katy Perry. I'm personally hopeful that Ennio Morricone's beautiful track "Ancora Qui" gets into the category, and I have a hunch it might. But what a bummer that "Who We Were" from "Holy Motors" didn't make the cut. I have no idea why. Also, the Weinsteins' push for Willie Nelson's "Midnight Run" from "Lawless" bore no fruit, I see. Though The Bootleggers and Emmylou Harris's "Cosmonaut" did.
Check out the full list of qualifying contenders below. We'll have the Best Original Song Contenders page updated in due time. For now, what do you expect will be nominated from the category?

December 11, 2012 at 5:39PM EST Reply to CommentHow come there's a Where Do We Go Now? song in there? Wasn't that Lebanon's submission for last year's best foreign language film?
Chris I guess it's that City of God situation where it was submitted but not nominated, got screened the following year so it became eligible in other categories?
December 11, 2012 at 5:48PM ESTAndrej If so, then I guess that if it had been nominated last year, it wouldn't have shown up in this list. Weird rulings, here.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if "one wing" from Sparkle made it in. And I hope "Breath of Life" makes it in. My fave original song of the bunch.
Matthew Starr If somehow Rick Ross and Greta Gerwig become part of the best original songs performance it would hands down be the best Oscar show of all time.
December 11, 2012 at 5:58PM ESTLiz It's a little embarrassing how excited I was to see "The Sambola!" on the list.

December 11, 2012 at 5:50PM EST Reply to CommentPeeved at the Holy Motors snub, although they may have had sound reasons to disqualify it. I'm personally pulling for the track from The Hobbit...I find it much better than the tracks that were made for the LOTR films.
Mr.F Maybe they didn't even submit it

December 11, 2012 at 5:52PM EST Reply to CommentI'm looking foreword to hearing the Academy's reason for disqualifying Holy Motors. With usage in the actual film and the (assuming) fact that it was written for the film, I'm utterly confused by its omission!

December 11, 2012 at 5:54PM EST Reply to CommentJust curious. How come Adele is eligible when her song uses old James Bond riffs but when someone like Clint Mansell takes classical music and adapts into something interesting and awesome he is ineligible?
Kip Mooney Yet the songs from Once were eligible, despite appearing on an unrelated album the year before. I will never understand this category.

December 11, 2012 at 5:58PM ESTKristopher Tapley I raised this issue myself a while back. Couldn't say. I guess everything's subjective.
December 11, 2012 at 5:59PM ESTMatthew Starr Who makes these rules anyway? Clearly the Academy never had any love for Mansell. I bet if Adele or Elton John had done a Black Swan riff they totally would have bent the rules to get them in.
December 11, 2012 at 6:01PM ESTIvan I strongly believe Adele will be nominated... Her performance will be one of the reasons younger audince will watch the show.
December 11, 2012 at 6:14PM ESTglebe I remember there being an inquiry into the originality of the Once songs. The conclusion was that they were indeed written for the film but it took so long to release that the songs were also used on an album in the meantime
December 11, 2012 at 6:38PM ESTPaul Outlaw The pre-existing riff is used in the arrangement of the song, it's not part of the basic musical composition, at least not to my ears. It would be different (I guess) if the song itself was a re-working of "The Bond Theme" or "Goldfinger" or some other piece of music.
December 11, 2012 at 7:17PM ESTKristopher Tapley I actually think the entire structure of the song is built on the up-down scale of the Bond theme. That's its brilliance, not a knock.

December 11, 2012 at 5:56PM EST Reply to CommentI feel like "Skyfall" now has to be the frontrunner since they ruled it eligible. I know popularity is not the only factor, but this is a legitimate hit from a worldwide superstar? Surely it will at least be nominated just to have Adele show up. Also, half these movies I've never heard of.
If I was picking the 5:
"Yo No Se" - Casa de mi Padre
"Ancora Qui" - Django Unchained
"100 Black Coffins" - Django Unchained (if only because we've only had 2 rap nominees ever)
"Big Machine" - Safety Not Guaranteed
"Skyfall" - Skyfall

December 11, 2012 at 6:29PM EST Reply to CommentI've predicted some of the most surprising nominees and snubs in this category in the past few years. I find the branch decisions pretty accurate in the past. But that's just me.
Anyway, from the list I would say "Skyfall" (because it's the best song of the year, not because it's Adele), "Ancora Qui" (it's Morricone for God's sake, this is so in), "Still Dream" (it's the perfect type of song for the branch and a lock iMO) and "Suddenly" (it's a musical song, they love to nominate this). There's a fifth spot for some rare nominee. I would bet it's "Everybody needs a best friend", the most Randy Newmanesque song of the list.

December 11, 2012 at 6:55PM EST Reply to Comment"The Sambola! International Dance Craze" from "Damsels in Distress". I'd like the production number to be centered on this. And have Whit Stilman's dream of making a dance craze a reality.
That "Suddenly" song from Les Miz sounds horrible and creepy.

December 11, 2012 at 6:58PM EST Reply to CommentThe decline of the movie soundtrack as a force in pop culture is kind of odd when you consider that the general trend is toward greater and greater inter-medium cooperation (though cut against the general decline of albums).
Now that "Skyfall" has made it over the initial hurdle I think it'd be considered the frontrunner if nominated; an easy, obvious way to reward an acclaimed, enormously successful movie.
I wish "Breath of Life" would make it, because in my opinion it's Florence's strongest piece of work, though it being relegated to an end-credits song makes that a lot less likely.
Agree with you on Breath of Life. It's one of my fingers crossed nominees.

Joseph Wow. Thanks for highlighting this song. It's only done by the stars of Once. Could definitely be a nominee similar to when August Rush got a song nominee a couple of years ago.

December 11, 2012 at 8:18PM EST Reply to Comment"You Know My Name" was a much, much better song than "Skyfall" is. "Breath of Life" is also overrated.
I am curious to hear what Ennio Morricone wrote for Django.

December 13, 2012 at 11:26AM EST Reply to CommentI'm hoping the group of voters really considers all submissions and doesn't let popularity effect them. If anyone of them appreciate elements of Creedence and Janis Joplin with a screaming violin solo reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix, then "Voodoo" could have a chance: https://soundcloud.com/shadow-mountain-music/06-voodoo-mp3
