Santigold

Hey, if you're gonna loan a song to HBO series "Girls," you might as well call it "Girls," right?

Santigold did just that, as she contributes the new track "Girls" for the first volume soundtrack for the cable comedy. As the characters struggle with their own idiosyncrasies and repeat their mistakes, so does Santi repeat her vocal rhythms "around the block." The a cappella opening gives way to a minimal drum machine beat with all the high-end your hungover heart can handle.

Santi is just one of many performers on this blissfully lady-heavy compilation "Girls – Volume 1: Music from the HBO Original Series," which is due Jan. 8 through HBO/Fueled by Ramen. One of my 2012 favorites Icona Pop is on there, alongside Belle & Sebastian, Tegan & Sara, fun., Grouplove and more. It's led off with Robyn's "Dancing on My Own," for which show creator/lead Lena Dunham and music supervisor Manish Raval should be given the Nobel Peace Prize.

Season 2 of "Girls" returns to HBO on Jan. 13.
