8. "Slumdog Millionaire" (2008)
A few years ago, I myself wouldn't have expected to see Boyle's Oscar-guzzling Mumbai fairytale this low on the list. But while I, like so many, was initially seduced by the explosion of sound and color on screen -- and remain alive to its tactile pleasures, even if I never need to hear "Jai Ho" again -- further viewings haven't been kind to its fleet but tenuous storytelling: if the love story is thin and the fatalistic allegory underbaked, the class study is so crude as to be distasteful. There's a puppyish boundlessness to the film that I still find appealing, and it's not hard to see why it swept all before it five years ago, but the very expertise of its craft makes its romantic naivete appear all the more calculated.
