Winners and Losers at the Summer 2012 Box Office
Tom Cruise, Charlize Theron, 'The Avengers' and more
Loser: 'Total Recall'
Box Office - U.S.: $57 million
Box Office - International: $98 million
Why: Sony Pictures claims the latest adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" only cost $125 million, but industry sources put the figure much closer to $200 million. Even if you go by Sony's numbers the picture's $155.7 million global gross barely cover's the films' worldwide marketing budget. The Culver City studio got lucky on "Men in Black 3" and "Amazing Spider-Man," but this is one potential franchise that was dead on arrival.
