6. It's in IMAX, but not 3-D
The use of 3-D has become so ubiquitous among the big studio blockbusters that at this point it's a surprise when a film doesn't come saddled with the technology. And yet Christopher Nolan - a director who's never shied away from going against the Hollywood grain - has remained steadfast in his unwillingness to bring the process to bear on "The Dark Knight Rises." Instead, the filmmaker shot in the increasingly-popular IMAX format (something he also experimented with on "The Dark Knight") in hopes of retaining the "large canvas and operatic sweep" of the previous entries. It's a refreshing creative stand, not to mention an appealing sentiment for those who have grown tired of the visual tradeoffs that come with viewing a film in 3-D.
