Who will be the next Spider-Man?
We breakdown the top candidates and it's not a pretty picture
Paging all actors who look under 20...
Even though it had been rumored for weeks, the news that director Sam Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire and Kristen Dunst had officially left the "Spider-Man" franchise still came as a shock to many. It seems too soon to re-cast and reboot a billion dollar franchise, but that's exactly what's going to happen. And soon.
Over the years, Sony Pictures played contractual games with Maguire and floated having other actors such as Jake Gyllenhaal take over the role of Peter Parker, but in the end Maguire always returned. Now, the studio plans on returning Parker and Spidey to his teenage years which means the 29-year-old Gyllenhaal is most likely too old to play the part. However, Sony is going to want some sort of name to relaunch Marvel's biggest super hero whether he's an indie up and comer or a supporting studio player ready to break out.
With that in mind, check out HitFix's top candidates to become the new big screen Web-slinger. And remember, they've got to be young, be somewhat recognizable and fit the part. No easy task.

January 12, 2010 at 7:04AM EST Reply to CommentI know this is straw-grasping, but c'mon, guys. Even the most desperate studio won't go with Jay Baruchel. I love Jay Baruchel, but...Jay Baruchel? JAY BARUCHEL? You have him as the FRONTRUNNER?
There's one really good entry on this list, and that's Yelchin - and he's probably out because of STAR TREK. They won't want to pay what Shia commands right now, McAvoy actually looks like a dude in his mid-20s...etc.
Why not look at guys that are actually teenagers right now that AREN'T Taylor Lautner? Think out of the box a little - the studio will be, because I bet dimes to donuts they want to MAKE a star out of someone because the character WAY overshadows whoever plays him. I was overly impressed with Logan Lerman in 3:10 TO YUMA. Kid's like 17 or something, looks the part without being...well, Jay Baruchel. Why wouldn't they give someone like him a shot?

January 12, 2010 at 12:06PM EST Reply to CommentWould Alexander Ludwig be too young for the part? He has a slight accent but that could be a good thing.

January 12, 2010 at 2:39PM EST Reply to CommentI dont know the guy, but I actually kinda like that Chase dude. My number one pick would be McAvoy, but since they are going young for this thats out of the question. I really hope they delve into Ultimate Spiderman for inspiration, and Ive heard Emma Stone as a suggestion for MJ which would be great if they go that route.
JACKIE I AGREE WITH YOU 100% JAMES MCAVOY WAS MY FAVORITE

they're going to pick an unknown that will have zero leverage in negotiations and zero baggage for the fanbase.

January 13, 2010 at 12:23AM EST Reply to Commentwhy not michael cera already?
just kidding. hehehe
I love james mcavoy. he's perfect, and would be great, but as much as i like spider-man, mcavoy is just too good for this "reboot". he is a good actor and should do more oscar-worthy films. and an occacional blockbuster to keep him going.
but i vote for chace-gossip girl. although he is too good looking for what picture peter parker to be, maybe that's what this reboot needs. i just hope he can act.
and please, NO taylor lautner!!!
i cant stand twilighters anymore!! he's just too bloated and anyoing! god, no!
ps: jake gyllenhaal is great. he would have been better than tobey.

January 14, 2010 at 3:18AM EST Reply to CommentAll these guys are way too old to play a high school student. Jay Baruchel played a college student 9 YEARS AGO. Shia was playing one 11 YEARS AGO. Make it realistic and hire a 16 year old.

January 14, 2010 at 4:22PM EST Reply to CommentHonestly, I think Taylor Lautner would be the perfect Peter Parker. That way, people may be less likely to think of him of "that twilight guy". Chace Crawford might play the part too, however he would have to dye his hair in order to look the part. As for Mary Jane, Taylor Momson could play the part well or maybe even Dakota Fanning. However, they would have to dye their hair red. Other than that, I'm sure that good actors will be picked to play those roles.
NOT taylor lautner. no way. hes way too tan and buff.

January 16, 2010 at 11:01PM EST Reply to Commentdevon werkheiser. great face but nerdy, like spiderman initially. he is recognizable by those who watch nickelodeon in the past couple of years, and I think he's capable of looking good in the spidey suit.

January 17, 2010 at 2:35AM EST Reply to CommentUm, Penn Badgley. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0046112/
He basically already plays Peter Parker without the spidey-powers on Gossip Girl. The quips, insecurity with girls, nerdy looks, and often a confused why-is-my-life-suck expression on his face really nails it down.

January 20, 2010 at 6:26PM EST Reply to CommentI would love to see Shia as a young Peter Parker. He looks like the boy next door, he's funny as hell, and he's a good actor.
Lynn But I was looking forward to seeing Shia complete the role of the newest young Indiana Jones, Jr.!!!

January 20, 2010 at 7:02PM EST Reply to CommentIf you are considering Taylor Lautner, why not consider Rob Pattinson who has forever dreamed of playing a "superhero" (his own words. He is a method actor who could play the role extremely well.

January 20, 2010 at 7:48PM EST Reply to CommentHey! You missed Matthew Herington as a possible candidate for the new Spiderman franchise! Young , good looking, excellent actor, a strong character in any role. Check him out at IMDB.com or LA casting. We love his work! You can't go wrong here! Thanks

January 20, 2010 at 9:33PM EST Reply to CommentI think to reboot the movie is a horrible idea, they are going to lose more money than their putting in to it. It started with toby and it should end with toby. Why fix something that isnt broke?
james yup your right they should just add more villains like mysterio carnage those kind of villains will be good for the movie
February 10, 2010 at 10:29PM ESTmarkus Omg, how very right you are! Its time to go forward, we don't wanna see the same played out shit again.

February 12, 2010 at 4:32PM EST Reply to CommentYelchin from Startrek would be best.
He is still somewhat unknown and young and geek looking.
Do for him what Spiderman did for Mcguire and people will fall in love when he's catapulted into the role. Or just an unknown
nina I definitely agree. Anton Yelchin would be the best out of all of the guys.

February 15, 2010 at 3:51PM EST Reply to CommentGeez, that was a pretty "padded" list, with people like Dev Patel, Jesse Eisenberg and Jay Baruchel on it. They are all good actors, but to be considered for Peter Parker - COME ON! Why not James Bond too?
This list was almost as bad as the Salkinds Superman list back in the 70s with people like Sylvester Stallone and Muhammad Ali on it.
I know it's a slow news day but this is just lazy reporting.

February 18, 2010 at 1:17AM EST Reply to CommentTHOMAS DEKKER! He looks young enough, he's not extremely well-known but he's not a no-name and has plenty of acting experience. Plus, he looks like Spiderman- just a REALLY hot version of him! I think he would suit perfectly.
Other people I think would do good is Alexander Ludwig, he was the best thing about that stupid Seeker movie and he was also good in Escape to Witch Mountaion. Maybe he's too young though.
Logan Lerman or Jake Abel but they are both tied up with Percy Jackson (plus, I think Jake is too confident to play Spiderman but who knows, maybe I'm wrong any movie he's in I'll see) My favorite pics would be Thomas or Jake
Also, what about Kyle Gallner? I don't think anyone's even mentioned him and he's great.

February 18, 2010 at 9:08PM EST Reply to CommentI think that umm... TOBEY MA FREAKING GUIRE SHOULD PLAY SPIDERMAN!
Holy CRAP is this whole reboot thing a terrible idea or what?! The only thing more silly than Hollywood rebooting all of these franchises 3 years after the last movie came out is that people are still going to see them! I cant believe Sony couldnt get another trilogy out of Raimi and his wonderful cast. I hope this reboot runs into huge problems, and Sony loses the creative license due to the time restraints on it. Rubbish.
Trekscribbler I think it's a great idea. The first 3 Spiday flicks were boring as hell for me, so I embrace a change in direction.
