Who should play the new Scarface?

In 1932, Paul Muni played an Al Capone-esque Italian-American gangster terrorizing prohibition-era Chicago. In 1983, Al Pacino hammed it up as a Cuban immigrant mobster terrorizing coke-addled Miami. Now, with Universal considering another version of the American-dream-gone-astray tale, HitFix takes a look at a few of the contenders to play a 21st Century version of the gun-toting gangster. Since details are scarce about the character, we're going into this without any specific national background in mind, except for the fact that wherever life is cheapest, that's where Scarface has to come from.

Thinkin Outathabox Why does Scarface have to be Latino? Shouldn't the "poor immigrant-turned gangster-makes-good" today be Chinese? Would give a different twist to the story and set it apart from comparisons to Tony Montana.

To me, the best choice is Benicio del Toro. He has the most emotional range and the right look to tackle this part.

Danny Trejo, Aaron Paul or even Brian Cranston. Trejo would be great AND hilarious! Though I would see anything with Depp in it. My boy!

larry Trejo definitely has the right look and presence, but not the acting chops, unfortunately. I'd like to see him in the movie playing a different character.

@Mister Big - I agree with you on the recycling. But you have to admit, the '83 remake was a *classic*. I don't think 3 times would be the charm. Yet what out of Hollywood has ever truly been an original? It's just more obvious these days.

Logically, it should be a Latino/Hispanic portrayal. Drug cartel member, second generation (illegal?) immigrant arrival, just like the first two Scarface characters (Italian and Cuban American respectively).

If T.I. can act, he'd get my vote. If "wherever life is cheapest" sets the origin for the new Scarface, Africa's where it's at.

My first pick is NO ONE - they shouldn't remake Scarface! Whats next? Casablanca? If they MUST remake it they should definitely go with a REAL latino this time around, like Benicio del Toro or Javier Bardem, someone with proven acting skills and respect in the industry.

Juan Why does respect in the industry matter? Who cares what the industry thinks? If someone who's never been in a movie before is the best actor for the part, who cares what Hollywood thinks.

What's with all the white/black guys? Scarface needs to be Cuban, Latino/Hispanic at a minimum. I think a good choice would someone under 40 with a good resume but little public exposure. A good place to start would be the former cast of OZ (HBO).

Without question: I should play the next Scarface. I even have a scar on my face. LOL Actually true. I was doing some body work on a car and the grinder got bound up in the fender well. It jerked out of my hand, ran up the fender and instantly ripped my face open. My girlfriend at the time said; 'Dang! You were hot before, but now you look meaner and hotter than ever. By the way ladies; 'this is the right answer'.
Back to the 'me' being perfect for this part, I would be perfect for any part. I am a great actor. Almost as good as I am 'a writer'. ;-) I always imagine that the screen is simply 'the world's mirror' and as long as you can clearly reflect the world back to itself, then you 'as an actor' have done your job.
