Steve Carell is in some ways a Billy Crystal-style Hollywood figure. While their comedic styles are wildly different in almost every way imaginable, both are well-respected funny guys who aren't liable to rock the boat given their "entrenched" industry status (as opposed to someone like Ricky Gervais, for example). Most importantly, he's actually funny, with an improvisational background that would give him a leg up in handling any awkward stretches during the show, of which there are always at least a couple (if not more). Still, while his film career isn't exactly on fire at the moment (this summer's "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" hardly made a blip), Carell has several potential hits lined up that may make him wary of accepting any hosting duties for fear of somehow tarnishing his status as an "A-list actor."
