Who should direct Chris Nolan's 'Superman'?
13 candidates the 'Dark Knight' director should consider before sealing any deal
Who will helm the Man of Steel's return?
What Chris Nolan, David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan have concocted for a new big screen reboot of "Superman" is still being kept secret, but with a looming 2012 release date word is starting to get around that a director is finally begin sought after for the potential blockbuster.
Chris Nolan has gone on the record numerous times that he will only produce and not direct, which means whoever comes on board will have the delicate balance of trying to meld their vision for the Man of Steel with the acclaimed maestro behind "The Dark Knight," "Inception" and "Memento." Will that scare off a lot of potential helmers? It probably depends on their love of Metropolis and how much WB and Legendary are planing to compensate a potential new helmer. Now some dream contenders are just unrealistic. The Coen Bros.? Not a present day Supes. Steven Spielberg? Keep dreaming. Richard Donner? Sure, and maybe William Shatner will make a cameo in "Star Trek 2."
With that in mind, we're running down the already publicly discussed candidates with a few contenders of our own. And bizarrely, many of them are British. Just like Nolan. Interesting...

September 28, 2010 at 7:47AM EST Reply to CommentIt seems almost irrelevant which director is chosen. With Nolan, Warner Bros and everyone else having their say, a new director coming in is going to have a hard time putting his own distinctive style on the picture. Hence Nolan should make it.

September 28, 2010 at 9:44AM EST Reply to CommentJust make sure to keep Brandon Ruth as far away from this film as possible and find a belivable Lois Lane!
Erica Durance does by far the best modern version yet btw.
September 28, 2010 at 1:17PM EST Reply to CommentI think Gore is the likely candidate here. However, Danny Boyle is a real interesting idea...

September 28, 2010 at 2:13PM EST Reply to CommentI can't believe you jackasses would include Mike #$%$% Bay on that list. If that ass clown comes within a mile of any Superman movie I will personally shove a hunk of meteor rock down his gullet and sew his mouth shut. An emphatic NOOOO!!
Also, no to Tony Scott and Gore.
As for the rest, I dunno. I loved Moon but I can't tell from that if Duncan Jones can tackle something like Superman. I'd probably look harder at Danny Boyle who has more films under his belt.
The vital thing that a potential director needs is *passion* for Superman. A director that just wants a high profile project under his/her belt and didn't grow up reading Superman is not the person for the job.
Sam Raimi was passionate about Spider-Man and it showed. Sony really screwed up by letting him go. And if I ever run into Avi Arad I hope I'm driving a semi. But I digress...
I wish that one of my favorite directors was passionate about Superman and would take it on: David Fincher or P. T. Anderson. But that's a pipe dream.
Has anyone mentioned the Wachowski Brothers? When I saw Neo flying at the beginning of the "Matrix Reloaded" I thought that was a great visual. If they were fans and interested I would vote for them.
As for the movie itself I really hope they do an origin story. Yes, everyone knows the story of Superman but look how well Nolan handled Batman's origin. He absolutely nailed it and convinced me why Bruce Wayne would become Batman.
And a Superman movie needs Lex Luthor. Lex Luthor is to Superman what the Joker is to Batman. Maybe leave LL for the second movie and introduce him in the first.
The next Superman movie is *the* most important super hero movie DC will tackle. They have the right man for the job in Nolan and I trust his guidance. He has proved himself with his body of work. Thankfully DC has put their trust in him and let him make the best superhero movie to date.
This Superman movie has to be right. If they fail then his character is essentially dead for the next decade. While I will give Bryan Singer a pass for his X-Men movies and ushering in the modern age of super-hero movies, he really messed up with Superman Returns.
This is Superman's last chance. Don't screw it up.
Mulderism Wow! The interwebs are all abuzz about the topic and rumours are flying.
September 28, 2010 at 2:22PM ESTI vote 'no' for Ben Affleck too. Two movies under his belt is not enough.
Then again Nolan had a small number of films under his utility belt when he tackled Batman...

September 29, 2010 at 11:53AM EST Reply to CommentI personally think Nolan wants to concentrate on wrapping up his bat-man trilogy and moving on with his career. Not invest time and energy into another super-hero epic. especially when hes got inception and the dark knight to live up too with his last bat-man film. Much Like Sam Raimi and his spider-man trilogy, and i loved the spider man trilogy, but i was way more excited for Raimi to get back to horror.
And if you they even consider someone like Tony Scott, they should just ask John Woo to do it. that would rule.
