BubbleWatch: NBC's 'Southland'
IN ITS FAVOR: A deep ensemble cast and some decent reviews are a good things, but what "Southland" really has going for it is John Wells as producer and two weeks of strong ratings in the Thursday 10 p.m. hour.
AGAINST IT: You kinda have to wonder if NBC was so excited about the first two weeks -- the network has been calling "Southland" a "phenomenon" in ads -- that folks have stopped paying attention for the past two weeks, where ratings have plummeted against actual competition. We don't want to keep banging that "Chuck" drum, but "Southland" has most recently been doing sub-"Chuck" numbers in the 18-49 demo.
OUR GUESS: NBC has thrown too much weight behind "Southland" for it not to come back. Then NBC will be surprised when they program the show in a more competitive time period and it turns out that the ratings were really just an illusion.
THE VERDICT: "Ryan Atwood, Year One" will get a second year. NBC has renewed "Southland."
