14. 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch'
John Cameron Mitchell's blisteringly funny and sexually frank musical about a transsexual rock star whose botched gender-reassignment surgery left him trapped somewhere between male and female is a showcase for a remarkable performance and some great songwriting. There's one number in particular, 'Origin of Love,' that turns into an animated interlude that is one of the most profound declarations of need and desire I've ever seen on film, and overall, it is one of those films that seems as fresh and dangerous now as when it was made in 2001.
