How will 'Les Miserables' compare to these classics?
5. 'The Sound of Music'
Just a few years after "West Side Story" (which just missed the cut-off date for this list), director Robert Wise brought another Broadway hit to the big screen with this epic which brilliantly balances light musical comedy and dark dramatic undertones. Certainly one of the most hit-filled musicals listed ("My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," the title track, and others), "Sound of Music" is equally memorable for its sweeping, widescreen visuals, Wise's crisp direction, and the sterling performances by Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer and all those little Von Trapp kids. Although you've probably seen it on TV a dozen times, "Music" really has to be seen on a big screen to be fully appreciated.
