Betty fires away
Season 1, Episode 9 ("Shoot")
Who it involved: Betty, her surly neighbor and some birds
Why it's memorable: After Betty's hopes of rejuvenating her modeling career bite the dust, the denial-laden suburban bombshell manages to convince herself that she's fine just being a "good" wife and mother to Don and the kids while letting her career ambitions slip away. As if to prove just how serious she is, she ends the episode by taking potshots at her surly neighbor's beloved pigeons with an air rifle from the backyard with a cigarette dangling out of her mouth - symbolically shooting down her own dreams of escaping the domestic cage she's been relegated to. The moment serves as a perfect capper to one of the first season's greatest episodes and is arguably January Jones' greatest single moment on the show.
