Don pitches Hershey
Season 6, "In Care Of"
Who it involved: Don, Roger, Cutler, the Hershey guys.
Why it's memorable: Don Draper's Season 6 spiral was epic, but the finale found him contemplating going sober and getting things together. Shortly before making his Hershey's pitch, though, Teddy urges him to have a drink. In the meeting, it looks like Don Draper is pulling a Don Draper, telling a BS story about a child's father buying him a Hershey's bar and learning to associate love and chocolate. "Weren't you a lucky little boy?" the Hershey's guy asks Don. But Don has the shakes and, in this moment, he decides to do the unconscionable. He tells the truth, spinning a horrifying story of his childhood in the Pennsylvania whorehouse and the girl who made him pickpocket the Johns and how, if he did well, she'd give him a Hershey's bar. "And then I would eat it alone, in my room, with great ceremony. Feeling like a normal kid," he says. It's the same story, but it couldn't be more different. And nobody knows how to handle it. Because how do you handle Don Draper telling the truth?
