Big Fish (2003)
Plot: The fantasy-laden autobiographical stories that have been told by a dying man throughout his life are imagined by his adult son.
What's in it for guys: This Tim Burton effort is imbued with the director's usual blend of visually-stunning whimsy and oddball pathos. The strained relationship and ultimate understanding that develops between the kooky father (wonderfully played by Albert Finney) and his practical-minded son (Billy Crudup) will bring a tear to the eye of even the most hardened of tough guys.
What's in it for girls: The visually-lush fantasy world created by Burton and his collaborators serves as a gorgeous backdrop to the central romance that develops between the young Edward (Ewan McGregor, ooo-la-la) and his eventual wife Sandra (played by Alison Lohman as a young woman). The relationship between the couple in present-day (Finney and a typically-superb Jessica Lange) is touching and bittersweet.
