7. "Road to Perdition"
Sam Mendes' sophomore film houses what may be one of the least certain performances of Hanks' career -- that could be interpreted as a slight, but it needn't be. As hardened Depression-era hitman Michael Sullivan, he hovers throughout on the fine border between simple miscasting and effective anti-typecasting. It's his nervous quality that makes the performance oddly persuasive -- even in his coldest criminal acts, he projects a father caught between his own conflicting roles in life, and wondering how best to serve them.
