No, I’m not trolling. Gus Van Sant’s audacious shot-for-shot remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s unimprovable horror milestone was probably a knowingly doomed provocation from the outset: there were always going to be a vast amount of critics (not to mention dim-witted Razzie voters) who wouldn’t see the point of retracing Hitch’s steps so methodically. What they missed was that that the film was more a conceptual installation than an attempted emulations, wittily studying the intangibles that distinguish two films built from the same blueprint. Good Anne Heche performance, too.
