Remake of: "Fanfare of Love" (Richard Pottier, 1935)
The defining example of a remake so comprehensively outpacing its source that most audiences presume it’s an original, Wilder’s blithe, narratively embellished take on a lightweight 1935 French farce (already remade in the early 1950s in Germany) needs no introduction or justification as one of Hollywood’s greatest comedies. Its breakneck banter and fusing of mainstream genres (the gangster subplot was Wilder’s innovation) may seem steeped in American tradition, but it’s in the cross-dressing hijinks' then-subversive sexual politics (don’t forget, this film was banned in several states) that its European roots begin to subtly reveal themselves.
