"One day I looked straight at her and she looked straight back"
Song: "Working on the Highway"
Why: For Springsteen, it's all about getting the girl, but in this case, it's more aspirational. He works on a road crew holding a red flag, but in his mind, there's a better life looming and it ties in with connecting with "a pretty little miss." They meet at the union hall, go for a walk, he meets her eye and she doesn't turn away; she looks straight back. There’s no greater sign of love in his mind and his whole motivation for working on the highway changes. It's the brilliance of Springsteen: a whole story told in a single line.
