5. "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" (1985)
From his debut through to his latest, frenetic farce has been a mainstay of Almodóvar’s career, and while he’s made more elaborate and ambitious ones than this rough-edged story of a put-upon housewife literally getting away with murder, I’m not sure he’s ever made one quite this funny. Carmen Maura had already made two features with the director when he gifted her with this skewed tribute to female-led Italian neo-realism, but this is the film where she arrived – and remained – as the quintessential Almodóvarian leading lady.
