With 'Gravity' hitting theaters we stick up for this and that
A number of individual actors from the 2005 Best Picture winner's sprawling ensemble were singled out at some or other point in the season, from Matt Dillon to Don Cheadle to Thandie Newton. Yet Bullock's surprisingly terse, necessarily unlovable turn as an LA society wife slowly latching on to her own prejudices received comparatively little notice from voters or critics. For my money, it's the film's best, most affecting performance, even saddled as it is to one of the gauchest arcs of Paul Haggis' script. The character's one-sided epiphany that her maid is her only true friend should be crass, but the way Bullock plays it, without quite letting go of the character's blinkered selfishness, is quietly touching.
